My next statement is not just for Christians in particular.
I think people in general show their true colors online just because they are protected by their anonymity. They can say anything, be their worst self and di””they can run away from the consequences of that.
In real life, they care about their reputation and what people will say about them and their families.

@CookieCrumbs and some… can even be more courageous and stand up for what’s right. Anonymity, gives us license to be our best… or possibly worst selves.🖤

@JustGoneNow
Wouldn’t we be courageous to stand up for what is right if we weren’t anonymous?
Believing in what is right is the core of a person. Anonymous or not, I think that person would choose doing the right thing.

@CookieCrumbs it can be scary. I live in a small rural traditional and very conservative part of the US. I’m an openly gay woman in a interracial lesbian relationship. It can be very scary to stand up for what’s right off line and unanonymously.

Au contraire. It shows us exactly what people are really like, behind the masks polite society makes them wear.
What, you think I actually eat as many cookies as I post here??

It's an interesting topic. Of course, on a place like this where everyone is anonymous, it's easy to "let it fly", and be all anger and judgment or whatever.
However, on Facebook I'm only connected with people I know IRL, and over the past few years I've been unpleasantly surprised by a lot of them. Not necessarily for holding a particular view, but for how nasty they are towards anyone with a different view. There are some people that are so bad that I'd really rather have nothing to do with them, including a few that are Christians. And again, these are people who know each other, interacting with each other - not like here.

Over the last few years a number of “Christians” have revealed their true selves. And it’s not the Christianity I was raised in and taught.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@SageWanderer I seriously wish Yahoo! Answers was still up and running, so you could see some of the so-called Christians who posted there. There was a guy who called himself No Chance Without Jesus. I called him the Lyin' Lion, because he always had a lion as his profile picture. Some of the stuff this guy spewed made me wonder if he had ever read the Sermon On The Mount in his life. He definitely had a very literalistic interpretation of Genesis.
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@LordShadowfire Like many I have encountered lately it’s their idea to cherry pick passages to suit their ideas and beliefs. I was told in high school by a Jesuit ( and the Pope is one) that to lead a Christian life follow the Sermon on the Mount as a guide,

Totally disagree, I've met irl very hypocrite religious people, irl and here and everywhere you'll find good and bad people.
Just here is easier to pretend things they're not

Oh, many of the ones I once knew in real life, were hypocritical asses
@SW-User that’s too bad.

@JustGoneNow that’s a very super brief way to put it
Pretty much the reason I denounced my Christian faith
However, everyone is human. EVERYONE. Why so many expect Christian’s to be perfect, will always baffle me. Cause none are or can be

@SW-User I keep my faith, but you know I don’t judge. And our Catholic pope said if a gay person wants to worship, who is he to judge. I take him at his word.

Wait ....you meanto tell me
People aren't honest on the internets ?

Overall I think you are right, about whatever group. You mentioned Christians so I'll mention atheists: the ones I know are lovely people, but if I just knew about atheism from online "discussions" I would think they were mostly highly aggressive and intolerant.
I'm not sure why this amplification of negativity happens but you are wise to look beyond it!

Or maybe some really are and reveal who they truly are here, while they hide it among civilized people of RL.
@Magenta some surely do… but not all. I tend to think it’s an extreme minority.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
I think it'll show you the worst of society. Yet at the same time, there's also very good people as well. Just be careful who you trust.
Elessar · 26-30, M
Wait until you meet irl the Christians that run in politics. You've only exposed yourself to a good subset.
💯 Extremists of every stripe continue to suck all the oxygen out of the room.

Yes, sometimes i look at the mirror after i take a selfie and say I'm not that ugly 😬🥰

Why are you referring to yourself as “all”? How many of you are there?
It is the only society I know.
Ceinwyn · 26-30, F
@SmileOnYourBrother The online society? It that case you need to leave your home and go talk to people. 🙂
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
The Christians I know from the church I work at are awesome. There's no particular love for them in general here. And when you make a statement about any religious group, it's MILLIONS of people. I doubt any one person is qualified to generalize on that level.
@uncalled4 I remember the people of faith that I used to volunteer with at the soup kitchen and homeless shelter, were so kind… even to a crazy gay girl like me. Recently, I’ve returned to the Catholic Church that I grew up in, and I’m definitely a kind person… mostly.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@JustGoneNow That's good to hear.

I’ve met a lot of ugly Christians in person. They don’t represent the religion well, and I’ve been encountering them long before there even was an internet. They’re not perhaps the best example of your point.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
Depends on the Christians. The Fundamentalist Protestants I went to school with? Nah, they were legit terrible.
The Armenians I've met who belong to the Armenian Apostolic Church? On the whole nothing but positive.

Absolutely. People only put out one dimension of themselves on the internet. Myself included. Some folks say it's a defense mechanism. Can't put too much of your real personality out there among strangers.
@LordShadowfire yeah, I’m dumb. 🤣
