Remember the AOL chat rooms?

I met so many people through AOL back in 1990’s-00’s then it just died. Anyplace you go to now is filled with bots, porn, sext DMs and pervs. Are there any REAL chat rooms like AOL anymore? I miss those days of the internet.

I remember msn chat. The problem is now everyone expects too much. When the internet first began it was new for everyone so there was no expectations and there was nothing to compare too
@twiigss Back in the day there were irc platforms that made chatting and finding servers and channels a lot easier. I hear rumors that a few servers and channels still exist, but like you said, are invite only.
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@GLITTER That is very true.
Ilovebustyladies · 51-55, M
@GLITTER I loved MSN chat with MSN messenger awesome days

So AOL still exists. I went to the website and as a free download got the AOL Desktop. For the most part, it's a ghost town. However.... there are still chat rooms that do exist, that people use. The only problem is that all of those people know each other, and are always having some kind of "inside joke" discussions, so it feels like you can never add to the conversation. ****Note: This may have changed, because I can no longer find a download for AOL Desktop. I did see something about AOL Desktop Gold, it's $6.99 a month, but I think AOL is discontinuing that. So any AOL chat rooms that are left, might be gone.****

And when you feel like it's the right time to jump in with a Hi, or you make an off the cuff comment, you're either ignored by everyone, or you might get a friendly response. But these people in the chat rooms makes it feel like they've known one another for years. So you really feel like you're intruding and shouldn't be there. This might only be 2 or 3 chat rooms that have a good number of people.

The rest of the chat rooms? All zero. So for example, you might see this list of chat rooms:

(53) Pittsburgh
(44) Columbus
(11) Phoenix
(3) Las Vegas
(0) Miami
(0) Sioux Falls
(0) New York
(0) Chicago
(0) Los Angeles

And so on and so forth. It's pretty much dead other than a couple of chat rooms that have people in, but those chat rooms are full of people who seem to know each other. Whether it's from chatting for years, but some people talk as if they live in the same areas as well, so it's hard to tell. I used to chat on AOL and then after chatting for a while would meet them in person. That was mid 1990's.

even the way EP was structured would be nice

the one big downside to SW is the open forum 'lobby', instead of posts/comments being contained inside each forum
aka- you didn't see the posts if you weren't part of That forum
NewRaven · 51-55, F
@RoxClymer yes I totally agree with you.
@RoxClymer that is the bane of this whole site.. but.. that is how the subverters want it.. open for anyone to be able to see what is happening everywhere.. thats why they have to infiltrate groups on facebook with fake accts to be able to spy on them. And they have gotten so good at it these days that literally nowhere is safe anymore.. i remember yahoo back when godaddy was just coming up and that was when the trolls started to become a problem. Things haven't really been the same since.
I remember Yahoo chat rooms.

EmilyMom · 51-55, F
@WonderGirl i like that you had different categories and places, so you could chat with people near you.
@EmilyMom I remember all the rooms had age groups.

@PrincessRoarBuddy Yeah it was. Loved those days.
@bhatjc nice
twiigss · M
@PrincessRoarBuddy You couldn't go into an AOL chat room and not see ASL? It got old quick.
TravisTx · M
My very first chatting was done in the AOL chat rooms. Way back using the old and slow dial up connections. I didn't even know how to type yet, so I was just as slow! haha!
WellFrog · 56-60, M
My entree into online chat was the AOL chat rooms - on dial up. As the years moved forward, still on dial-up, Yahoo soon supplanted AOL as my chat source of choice. Back then there were so many amazing rooms and often regional or local rooms. Yahoo also allowed for user-created rooms and that helped really target the chat.

I will admit that those chats at times led to offline relationships that were extramarital in nature. More often taking the oline experience to phone, but sometimes there were flings and even full blown affairs as a result.
YMITheWayIM · 46-50, M
I was a fan of Yahoo chatrooms.
There were always bots, trolls and pervs no matter what the year was.
The user created rooms got the 1st axe back in 2006 after countless complaints were being filed.
The featured room also died in 2012.
That's how I found EP.
Punches · 46-50, F
@YMITheWayIM
The featured room also died in 2012.

You mean to tell me that AOL still existed even in 2012? 😮 I thought it had vanished in like 2003 or something.
YMITheWayIM · 46-50, M
@Punches no idea dude, my dial up connection was a bit too slow to support AOL messenger
Mktonght · 61-69, M
LOL, Yes I met my wife in on of those rooms. they
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@Mktonght lucky you man
Redstar · 36-40, M
I miss chat rooms in general but I guess discord ruined that.
Cause it's kind of like chat rooms except you need to jump through hoops just to be able to post and then repeat that same boring, tedious process for every single server, only to discover that it's exactly the same as the others, regardless of what the topic is supposed to be.
originnone · 61-69, M
yeah....and prodigy before that.
originnone · 61-69, M
@twiigss We learned Basic plus and then fortran. I later learned C++ on my own.
twiigss · M
@originnone I had a friend who went to devry college and he learned as400 and c++. I tried to learn from him but it just wasn't working. I do better in a class.
originnone · 61-69, M
@twiigss I do too. I started a masters program in computer science and dropped out pretty quickly. I just wasn't all that interested.
twiigss · M
I found a download on the official AOL website for Aol Desktop Gold. Looks like you can try it free for 30 days. Looks like you need an Aol account to be able to even download it.

Teenage me loved AOL city chat. I met several online friends and a couple boyfriends IRL.

I've yet to jump on the Discord train. Maybe I'm too old.
Adrift · 61-69, F
I remember that, you could get help on just about anything on those.
There were some trolls and weirdos but it seemed like people kept it clean.
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M

I met many on yahoo chat and MSN chat. I'm still friends with very few now but we keep in contact
AOL and similar chats were geared more for younger people, specifically jr high and hs students, us older people had mainly internet relay chats for more serious subject discussions, that format pretty much died out in the mid to late 00's when social media like Topix, EP, twitter, and fb came about.
