Have many times. The last was just below 4,000.

Oh yes!! Little towns, communities, can be very special. You can get to know everyone if you like and everybody gets to know everybody eventually and it's really great. I think whether you live in a big or small town, I think it's what you contribute to it in your attitude that makes the difference. I guess I'm kind of like a gypsy, myself. Haha I would love to live in a small mobile home court and I would be there right now if the lot rent wasn't so much. $450 or more it's just crazy for the lot rent.
markinkansas · 61-69, M
@LadyGrace my area you can rent a house for 450 a month .. or live with me
@markinkansas Do you have cats? I love cats. 😂
CassandraSissy · 26-30, T
I'm in quite the thriving Uni-Centric City, sweetie! I love it here. However....I'm a country gal, music wise, at heart...so that should fit in, shouldn't it?
😘
Just 'googled'; mine has 331k people here in Nottingham.

Sounds ideal ... towns of 25K to 130K meet my definition of ideal places to live.
BIG cities in the US tend to be places where most don't want to live. Escaping from those big cities to nearby suburbs of one of those 25K to 125K ideal towns is how we make things work in the US.

I can't see why not. It's not about the population, it's about its location, facilities and local culture. It could be an artificially created industrial town originally built for workers in the middle of the nowhere, it could be a picturesque seaside town with historic architecture with either primarily old inhabitants or immigrants of various background or it could be a satellite town nearby a big historical city.
Personally, I'd avoid the first option, not sure about the second, the third sounds great and the last would be probably ideal.

markinkansas · 61-69, M
@CrazyMusicLover here is where your problem might be .. health care . driving 15 miles to get gas of food. electric goes out once or twice a year.. or as in my case i am a blue dot in a red town..
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@markinkansas Healthcare might not be a problem at all. Paradoxically, you can get better treatment in a hospital in a small town than a big city. Big cities tend to be overwhelmed and doctors working there jaded. You should be able to get food and gas in a 40k town. 😐 Actually at multiple places.
One thing that happens in smaller communities is that elected leaders usually can't get away with disrespecting one another without incurring the wrath of the voters, because many voters may personally know one or both of the elected officials. They can get away with different opinions, different votes, opposing philosophies, BUT ... they usually can't get away with insulting and disrespecting one another. Big city politics is very different, with local politicians openly insulting one another. In both cases, what happens in city hall extends to the whole community. A toxic city hall for a toxic community; a love-fest at city hall and a lovefest community. Whether the dog wagging the tail or the tail wagging the dog it seems to hold true.

@swirlie That actually happens in smaller communities. Old stores, pool halls, bars, restaurants, etc. with living quarters for the owners on the 2nd floor. The old owners retired, moved to the suburbs, sold the businesses and turned those 2nd floor living spaces into rentals.
swirlie · 31-35
@Heartlander
In that case, I'll should probably buy the pool hall.

@swirlie Smart ... and commuting to/from work time would be like 15 seconds.
Fishy · 36-40, F
Hard to say,
On one hand it would be cool to have a close and tight night community where everyone has each other's back,
On the other hand, a small community where everyone knows everything about everyone can feel kinda toxic and restrictive sometimes

The land mass area is more important than the number of people who live there and what there is to do. My town has 26 thousand people but it’s about 6 miles long, has two beaches, a hamlet of fishing boats, a massive container port, and lots of shops, restaurants and cafes.
hunkalove · 70-79, M
I don't think I have much time left but I would love to take Bob Seger's advice and get out of Denver and spend my last few years in the kind of town I grew up in. Population 7000. Unfortunately, it's a MAGA town and i wouldn't be welcome there and they probably all are.
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
Pretty standard thing in the UK, living in a town within the city limits.
exexec · 70-79, C
Sure. I grew up in a town of 25,000. One requirement would be access to good medical care within 50 miles.

Done that for my teaching job.

Yep.. i would have no troubles living in a town that size..
Kiesel · 56-60, M
Absolutely
ThirstenHowl · M
It would depend entirely upon the specific town, the size just by itself would not be a determining factor
Things that would matter would be things like climate, natural beauty, cost of living, economy, culture (is it predominantly idiotic rednecks or no?), location / isolation level / proximity to bigger cities with actually beneficial amenities / quality healthcare ... and beyond the US, how easily would I be able to get by knowing only English or is the local language one I might be able to learn (I'd love to live in small towns / communes in southern Europe)
When you say small I was thinking under 10k, I wouldn't even necessarily think of 40k as super small ... one of my favorite towns on the northern California coast is under 8k, and fairly isolated but very beautiful and has a somewhat chilly but year-round climate that I love
Moreover, if you're in a small town that's a half hour or less from a big town, that's a lot different than living in one which is four hours from any useful city and necessitates signing up for things like emergency helicopter services to get to a real hospital
here's one nice example outside of the US ... this is Porto Santo Stefano, on the coast of Tuscany, the town is under 9k people, it's a 45 minute drive to a city with 82k people, a 2 hour drive to Rome, a 3 hour drive to Florence:

Maybe if I was old and retired. It’s not what you should do when you’re young though.

i live in a town of 100 persons .. mixed blessing.

@Phaethon
The reason they classify it as porn is because it has sexual content or sexually explicit material in it.
The reason they classify it as porn is to reduce us to nothing more than our genitals. It's dehumanizing, and you just sat there and justified it.
Gay authors need to learn to write books that don't have sexually explicit material in them.
Tell that to the authors of straight romance novels, and then we'll talk. But that's a distraction from what I'm actually trying to say, so I'll gloss over it. As far as banned pornography... good fucking luck with that, it won't just be the LBGTQ community rioting if that happens.
Yeah, you need to amend that to when, not if, but I'm glad you understand the First Amendment enough to take offense when they try that. But look at yourself, you can't even talk to a stranger without attempting to insult them with vulgar words
Sure I can. Look at my first reply to your comment before you added yourself as a narcissist who doesn't care about other human beings. I wasn't rude, and I wasn't obscene until you were.

Sure, I grew up in a town of 7 or 8 thousand.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@ElwoodBlues Small towns are nice when they're situated 15 minutes to a half hour from a decent sized city. You can go into the city for the day, have your fun, and then go home, grateful for your nice little suburban hideaway.
