In your opinion when do you start getting "old?"

ninalanyon · 61-69, T
By 'you' do you mean me or other people? My grandparents were old before they were sixty, my parents were definitely getting on a bit by that age too. I on the other hand feel younger now at 69 than I did ten years ago and certainly felt younger than either my parents or grandparents did at that age.

It all depends on your lifestyle, genetic luck, living in a healthy environment, etc. In my case living in Norway for more than half my life, never having smoked, drank only moderately and never having had to work in a job that was bad for my health.

I listened to a BBC Radio 4 program today in which an 80 year old woman was describing how she took up running half marathons at 60 and is now doing triathlons. She's not setting any records but still it's something that many of us couldn't do (including me!).

So to answer your question: I've really no idea!

@ninalanyon i know it varies from person to person. The inspiration behind this post was my mother who turned 60 this year telling me consistently how she feels she looks very old now. For the first time. But her health is in great condition and her father is still alive today at 92. Im nearing 30 and never have i thought more about the subject than i have in this last year

@astrosandorbits Sometimes I think people just feel that they must be old because tradition says that they are, I see that here on SW with people saying they are old at fifty. But health, nutrition, and work have all improved so much over the last hundred years that the old traditions no longer apply. I feel old only in the literal sense that I am older than my mother was when she died and that I have some trivial signs of ageing such as high blood pressure, but I don't feel my age (and if you look at my blog you'll see that I don't always act it either).

It's good to hear that your mother is in good health, And with genes like her father's you both probably have a long and healthy future ahead.

My midlife crisis was at 35, but I really didn't start feeling old until about 55. That's when my body told me to slow down.
astrosandorbits · 26-30, M
@exexec i guess that's what worries me. My body slowing down. Im 29 though and have quite a long time before then. But on dad's side my dad and grandad and great granddad had heart attacks/strokes early in their 50s. Mom's side my grandpa is still alive and perfectly normal at 92. With 30 looming around ive found myself thinking more about it this year than any other time yet
exexec · 61-69, C
@astrosandorbits If you haven't already done it, get a medical checkup. My brother-in-law had a similar situation with heart problems in his family. His son, my nephew, dropped dead with a heart attack at 43. My bro-in-law has heart issues, but the doctors are doing a good job to keep him going. He even has an artificial heart pump and still travels to Europe every year. Get a regular checkup!

It depends on how healthy you are. Take Ernie Hudson for instance, our neighborhood Ghostbuster. This man looks damn good for his age.

Thank God for melanin!

When the aches and pains are there as you go to sleep, and still there when you wake up. 👴
astrosandorbits · 26-30, M

GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
You start trimming your nose hairs, use your gut as a table when your sitting at the couch and you no longer sweat. You just smell like dust all the time.

And you notice your saggy arms flapping when you wave.
astrosandorbits · 26-30, M
@GuyWithOpinions mannnnn i started trimming my nose hairs at 25. Dad then starts telling me... wait until it starts growing out of your ears 😅🤣
supersnipe · 61-69, M
'Older' at 55 or so, 'Old' at 65, which I've passed. At what stage I become 'elderly' I'm not quite sure, but it's not yet!
astrosandorbits · 26-30, M
@supersnipe like some have said health definitely plays a part in all of it. If youe 80 and in great health then you could still feel like 30
MrGomco · 36-40, M
Physically when you are 78
Mentally wen you have a hostile attitude about life, it could be even if you're 15.
astrosandorbits · 26-30, M
@MrGomco frowning ages people so i hear
WillaKissing · 56-60
You are old once you consider yourself old, and not until then. I will continue to live out my extended teenage years!
When you have no more hope or reason to live. Otherwise it's all just a number.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
From the moment of conception it begins.
astrosandorbits · 26-30, M
@Entwistle damn that's one way to look at it

My personal opinion is that it's around 50 for the body and around 60 for the mind in most people. I might be wrong though because I don't know 'most people'.
2ndtimeguy · 61-69, M
If we live long enough we get old our bodies begin to breakdown and when that happens you accept it
CestManan · 46-50, F
I think on average, when people hit 40.
astrosandorbits · 26-30, M
@CestManan 40 seems like such an odd year. Both my parents looked amazing in their 40s and didn't seem to look like they were againg until their mid 50s. But many people will tell you 40s is when they start noticing certain things not working quite like they used to
when you stop being inquisitive and when you stop keeping fit
For a man, when he is 70. For a woman, 23.
astrosandorbits · 26-30, M
