In your opinion when do you start getting "old?"

By 'you' do you mean me or other people? My grandparents were old before they were sixty, my parents were definitely getting on a bit by that age too. I on the other hand feel younger now at 69 than I did ten years ago and certainly felt younger than either my parents or grandparents did at that age.

It all depends on your lifestyle, genetic luck, living in a healthy environment, etc. In my case living in Norway for more than half my life, never having smoked, drank only moderately and never having had to work in a job that was bad for my health.

I listened to a BBC Radio 4 program today in which an 80 year old woman was describing how she took up running half marathons at 60 and is now doing triathlons. She's not setting any records but still it's something that many of us couldn't do (including me!).

So to answer your question: I've really no idea!

@ninalanyon i know it varies from person to person. The inspiration behind this post was my mother who turned 60 this year telling me consistently how she feels she looks very old now. For the first time. But her health is in great condition and her father is still alive today at 92. Im nearing 30 and never have i thought more about the subject than i have in this last year

@astrosandorbits Sometimes I think people just feel that they must be old because tradition says that they are, I see that here on SW with people saying they are old at fifty. But health, nutrition, and work have all improved so much over the last hundred years that the old traditions no longer apply. I feel old only in the literal sense that I am older than my mother was when she died and that I have some trivial signs of ageing such as high blood pressure, but I don't feel my age (and if you look at my blog you'll see that I don't always act it either).

It's good to hear that your mother is in good health, And with genes like her father's you both probably have a long and healthy future ahead.
