Lines are an excellent punishment.

When I was a prefect at school I was authorised to give pupils lines. I regret to say I rather enjoyed doing so.

All three of those children are writing left handed. I wonder if they are being punished for that (as was the custom in days gone past).

I got lines and other forms of written punishments several times. I hated them. One time when I was given 200 lines I thought I'd be clever. I taped three pens together and wrote the first few words of the line, then squiggles with a proper word at the end. Thinking that the lines were never looked at when handed up, just either torn up or tossed in the waste paper basket, I felt pretty pleased with myself. It went pear-shaped when, as I handed up the lines, the master told me to put them on his desk and take my seat. Just as I was about to sit at my desk, he bellowed my name and demanded an explanation as he held up my papers. I was reported to my housemaster and got 6 of the cane. At least I didn't have to rewrite the lines!

I think my wife holds the school record for writing "I will not talk in class" on blackboards and then washing them.

that would be my nightmare as i have agraphie... back then people wouldnt even have known about that

And the blackboard was on an easel, many is the time I spent standing behind it.

Can someone explain to me why in G-d’s name one would be punished for being left-handed??

It's like looking at the Simpsons intro. It looks to me those kids are writing "Homer" on the blackboard.

Only lines we got at school were on our bottom. Usually 6 parallel ones.
