Can someone explain to me why in G-d’s name one would be punished for being left-handed??

@Bartleby Not really, but it was certainly quite common for children in UK schools to be forced to use their right hands for writing - a long time ago, of course. I think in some people’s eyes being left-handed carried some sort of stigma. Others may not have understood that it was a genetic thing, and treated it as a form of misbehaviour. Similarly everyone was expected to be able to spell, dyslexia not being understood. “Ours not to reason why …”

@Bartleby In some cultures the left side has negative connotations. The Latin word for left is 'sinister', which in English has come to mean 'unlucky', 'ominous', or 'evil'.

@SunshineGirl Sandy Koufax and I beg to differ. 😉

@Bartleby Left handers seem to be valued in a whole range of sports 🙂

@SunshineGirl Moreover, in cricket lots of people who are naturally right-handed choose to bat as if they were left-handed. Don’t know why.

@MartinII My dad played cricket. He was coached at school to bat with the opposite hand he bowled with. That way, if he injured his right hand and could not bowl, he could still make a contribution to the team effort with the bat 🙂

@SunshineGirl Bizarre. And actually pointless, because you need both hands to bat - it’s just a question of which hand is above the other. I’m sorry for your dad.
