I remember writing lines at school

I got lines and other forms of written punishments several times. I hated them. One time when I was given 200 lines I thought I'd be clever. I taped three pens together and wrote the first few words of the line, then squiggles with a proper word at the end. Thinking that the lines were never looked at when handed up, just either torn up or tossed in the waste paper basket, I felt pretty pleased with myself. It went pear-shaped when, as I handed up the lines, the master told me to put them on his desk and take my seat. Just as I was about to sit at my desk, he bellowed my name and demanded an explanation as he held up my papers. I was reported to my housemaster and got 6 of the cane. At least I didn't have to rewrite the lines!
