Does power corrupt?

Often, when you gain power you end up in an influential position in a system that is fundamentally corrupt and where you necessarily have to do dodgy things in order to maintain that power. The system is corrupt because it was created over many decades by people who designed it to benefit themselves and elites like them. If you're pure and incorruptible you won't fit into that system and you won't stand a chance of remaining in it.

No. Corrupt people feel unburdened from punishment so they act less according to expected repercussions and more so their morals

No, most humans are shit by nature. Power is just a litmus test.

I think it is similar to why do some people get addicted to various substances while others do not ... some already have a predisposition to forming an addiction, and likewise some are predisposed to being corrupted / becoming fascists with the first taste of power

But it's not an automatic thing with every individual who gains some level of power, some people are inherently good
