Why do people get married? Why should people get married?

To us it seems to have no purpose or reason to exist since it doesn't do anything.
justanothername · 51-55, M
It’s a legal recognition of your coupling with your chosen other.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@mksworld People make a conscious decision to get married because they want to show their commitment to each other until they either die or find someone else.
Out of commitment and respect. @mksworld
Why do you NOT want legal recognition so bad? @mksworld

I used to think I didn't need that piece of paper, but the older I get the more I can see value in it.

As someone who is divorced, ive come to realize there are only a few good reaspns to get married . To legitimize children and their rights and anything that has to do with property or financial distributions. However if we dont have kids amd we dont intermingle our finaces , we dont need paperwork to prove we love eachother .
@EPreject You would to get me. I'm not free
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
@EPreject I would never get married because of my children - that's so controlling in my view. Kids are your kids and they love their parents regardless of whether the parents are married, wear a ring, etc. or not. I have paperwork - called a court-certified parenting order - compelling my ex to let me see my daughter 5 nights a fortnight over every second weekend plus other conditions related to school holidays and 'special' days. There's no effing way in hell I would ever have considered marrying my 6 y/o daughter's mum because of the extreme abuse and violence directed towards me and our daughter during the first year of her life before I chose to leave her mum. My other kids are all adults now and I've paid child support as required for all my children.

While a marriage license is nothing more than a tax on marriage, the ceremony is what can be important to two people who want to share their union with loved ones, but not even that would be necessary in my opinion.
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
@calicuz Not having been to any weddings myself I can't conceptualise what the whole gamut of those are like except from what is commonly portrayed in movies and on tv shows.
calicuz · 56-60, M
@zonavar68

Those movies come pretty close, just not so many quirky antics. 😅

Marriage has always been a very negative concept to me since my parents divorced when I was 12 and the whole thing was made out to be a taboo topic never to be discussed and I really didn't have friends during my school years to see any other family dymanics that showed me positives of married and deep love bond connections that are supposed to beyond questioning and fully trusting.

I haven't been married in either of my LTR's.
Blondily · F
People get married because they find their soulmate and want to stay with them forever.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
But my house is clean and I didn't do it
in10RjFox · M
😀😀 Great realization many get after getting married. But Alas! it's too late.

It's just the crazy jump like a bungee jump .. everyone wants you to leap.. but none bother after you are pushed. And there are some who recover and come back to do the act again.
@in10RjFox Recover ? Why would one have to recover. It's just a piece of paper.
in10RjFox · M
@Spoiledbrat I think you didn't quite catch the analogy of bungee jump. So relax.

Some people care to formalize their social status, and celebrate it.

Some find it more convenient, to take advantage of what the law allows by default, as opposed to hiring attorneys to create a set of legally binding agreements.
JamesBugman · 56-60, T
It is like deciding you will always have milk and cereal in the morning, or maybe you want eggs and bacon. You commit to it, with all your heart and soul.
It can help keep couples together.
AbbySvenz · F
Yes, yes it can.

Isn’t bacon amazing? @JamesBugman
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
There's a legal binding, I guess that won't mean much to some people.

But also some religions consider marriage a spiritual commitment
mksworld · 46-50, C
@caPnAhab I've tried to not bring the religious side in since religion is a concept that makes us both very mad.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@mksworld

oh, I'm sorry.
I'd rather not get into it either, but I felt it was a relevant point
Tax benefits. Other than that, it's just a piece of paper.
@BohemianBabe There are people who have children for tax benefits.
@Spoiledbrat Also a bad idea.
To ensure that Dad pays the ducking money. Poverty is scary, women are expensive.
@Roundandroundwego
women are expensive.

Not if you buy them in bulk.
Torsten · 36-40, M
well there is zero benefits in it for men these days. I rather think its foolish for any man to get married

Whom do you mean by “us?”

And it’s not for you to judge for anyone else.
Patriot96 · 56-60, C
Their choice of commitment to each other
If it doesn't do anything than what's the big deal?
MarineBob · 56-60, M
A ring is cheaper than a nurse maid
