Why do people get married? Why should people get married?

To us it seems to have no purpose or reason to exist since it doesn't do anything.

Marriage has always been a very negative concept to me since my parents divorced when I was 12 and the whole thing was made out to be a taboo topic never to be discussed and I really didn't have friends during my school years to see any other family dymanics that showed me positives of married and deep love bond connections that are supposed to beyond questioning and fully trusting.

I haven't been married in either of my LTR's.
