Why do people get married? Why should people get married?

To us it seems to have no purpose or reason to exist since it doesn't do anything.

It’s a legal recognition of your coupling with your chosen other.

@justanothername But why do you need to have a 'legal recognition' of that when the law doesn't really care? You're still a 'couple' regardless, and there's no religious overtone/undertone attached.

@mksworld For the legal recognition of your union which comes in very handy when you have a marriage break up. Some people appreciate the legal acknowledgement of their union. Others like yourself don’t care or refuse to understand what a marriage is.

@justanothername Marriage is like art - in the eye of the beholder. It's not about what other think and it's not another person's place to judge two people if they are married or not. To us we see zero purpose would ever be fulfilled if we thought we might like to get married. Esp as we're two girls and many people find the concept of 'gay wedding' wierd since you can't have children biologically betweeen two men or two women that are married. Not that we're thinking of that. Karen has kids I don't. I've never wanted any.

@mksworld If you don’t agree with marriage that’s ok.
Gay guys and gay girls can get married but not all countries and states are willing to recognize their union.

@justanothername Ok so what does marriage actually 'do'? How does it affect your life post-marriage compared to if a couple hadn't elected to get married?
justanothername · 51-55, M
@mksworld are you part of a lesbian couple wanting to get married or have found that you are being restricted from doing certain things because you are not a married couple?
mksworld · 46-50, C
@justanothername Nothing has restricted us - in fact we think that if we got married it would cause more problems.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@mksworld so why all the questions?

I know that some US states recognize gay marriage and others don’t.
mksworld · 46-50, C
@justanothername It's got to be asked as so many people will not take on board discussing the core of what marriage is, why it is, and what function it's supposed to perform, and why anyone should want or choose to do it or not.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@mksworld It’s a legal
Recognition of your commitment to your chosen person.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@mksworld Fortunately getting married is not a legal requirement for to people to be able to live together.
mksworld · 46-50, C
@justanothername But why is that even necessary? If you feel commited to someone why do you have to conduct a formal ceremony? It's like saying love means nothing because most people only choose to celebrate it on valentines day and/or their 'anniversary' if an anniversary is meaningful to two people.

@mksworld read my last post.

@mksworld People make a conscious decision to get married because they want to show their commitment to each other until they either die or find someone else.
Out of commitment and respect. @mksworld
Why do you NOT want legal recognition so bad? @mksworld
