That love changes as the years go by. When you are with someone at first, it is very hot and steamy, and you are so much in love that you dream about your old age with that person.
Ten years later, you are both tired and working your tails off and disappointed that the first bloom of love has faded.
After 20 years, I felt as though I loved him in an entirely different way. I wanted to cook for him, and take care of him when he was sick. I would have been devastated if he had died. But he had changed SO much that there was nothing left of the person I had fallen in love with.

That it takes effort. It's a cliche, but love is a verb. You have to be constantly thinking about ways to show that you love that person, and hope that they will do the same.
