do you read books that were adapted to a film you’ve seen?

I’m eager to read Lord of the Rings even though I’ve watched the movie dozens of times

Most of the time the movie pales in comparison to the book. I have always been disappointed with the movies after reading the book. There are time restrictions on a movie that makes directors cut corners on character development. Then there is a tendency of directors to warp the authors intent to conform with their point of view.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy takes almost 1200 pages to develop the characters, set the scene and tell the story. Pretty hard to put all that into a movie.

I usually read the books first but once in a while it’s the other way around. I like to see what someone could make of the book. It’s usually a disappointment, but I did very much like the LOTR and Harry Potter movies. They weren’t perfect reproductions, but there was obvious care and effort there and they made beautiful films I thought. The Princess Bride movie actually stuck with me more than the book.

@JustNik A number of times I've seen a film which I didn't realize had been based on a book, and then go and read the book. That's how I discovered the old author, Tiffany Thayer.

@ChipmunkErnie despite the fact the movies aren’t always awesome reproductions, they do widen the audience for the books so I’m glad they give it a go. 😄

I read LOTR as a teenager (after reading the Hobbit first on the advice of a friend) and I absolutely KNEW it would never...Could never, be made into a movie..but they did a magnificent job on it. (Of course, the less said about the Hobbit movies the better..) In contrast, one of my favourite SF stories as a teenager was Starship Troopers...And everyone involved in that, down to the caterers needs a good flogging..😷

I read the Lord of the Rings books years before the movies were made.

After the first movie was put on DVD, I started to watch it. Right from the beginning, it struck me as having a different "feel" to it, compared to the book, and I stopped watching.

Someday, I will read those books again. But I will probably never watch the movies.

Books are ALWAYS better

LOTR is one of the when times when I was eager to dive into the full story flesh out by Tolkien's genius.

Yep. Some books are actually better than the movie. The Shining, imo, is a prime example. The movie is excellent, don't get me wrong, but there's a tragic element to the character Jack that they completely left out of the movie that makes the novel even better, if you ask me.

As for The Lord of the Rings, those are excellent and are just as good as the films. You'll probably find that there are lot of things that the movie did better and things the movie forsakes entirely and doesn't do any justice whatsoever. But if you enjoyed the movies, I'm sure you'll enjoy the books too.
Yes used to read alot. Off top of head pet semetary, both very good, and Bonfire of the vanities. Book was very good. Movie sucked. Lots of others but I forgot

sladejr · 56-60, M
Should see the flick before reading the book. It will be disappointing otherwise
Puppycat23 · F
@sladejr I’ve seen the movie many times.
The books are great and easy to read.

It took me a few days one summer long ago.
Yes i have less than half a book of the last divergent series. Amazing reading and movies

Flowers for algernon is a movie but I've only read the books. Broke my heart that book.
darkmere1983 · 46-50, M
the lord of the rings books are far superior to the films.
akindheart · 61-69, F
i find that the movies leave out a lot. then i am left wondering why.
SaltnLime · 70-79, M
It's a commitment, but definitely worth it.
Often I’ve read the books first. My father gave me a set of the Tolkien books for my 12th birthday.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
I have, and I've seen movies based on books I;ve read in the past.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
I grew up on Lord of the Rings as a book so in that case, yes!
Yes and read the LOTR ....the books are so much more detailed
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
That's actually the movies that first made me decide to check out the book versions.
