Can someone explain the reverence conservatives have for Elon Musk?

They claim to hate "big tech," but Musk invented PayPal.

They hate electric vehicles, but Musk made his fortune selling them.

The guy makes a few comments that suggest he doesn't believe in content moderation, so when he says he's buying Twitter, conservatives go gaga.

I sincerely hope Musk buys Twitter, runs it into the ground, and loses his fortune trying unsuccessfully to keep it afloat. That would be hilarious.

Well, from the amount of discrimination lawsuits, including by the State of California, for the working conditions at his Tesla assembly plants, we can guess what side of the apartheid issue in South Africa he was on before immigrating. Whoops! He couldn't be an immigrant because he isn't a murdering rapist with dark skin for whom English is a second language. And he has the proper ego, bloviates enough, and has a better success rate than he whom we shall not name -- even if his hair isn't orange.

This absolutely does NOT apply to all conservatives. But... among many
There tends to be distrust of:
* Politicians
* Scientists
* Universities
* Educated people
* Professionals
* Anything left wing
* Non-Christian religions
There tends to be blame and disdain for:
* The poor
* People of other races
* Welfare or those who need it.
There tends to be respect for:
* People who work hard.
* Wealthy people like billionaires. 'They work hard.' They earn it. Apparently.

This last one is a serious puzzle, but it's there. So Trump has positioned himself as a successful man, not in any of those groups they distrust (politicians, university educated, etc) - in fact ready to drain the swamp. He played on all of the negative lists here to strengthen his popularity. He rings each bell and they respond.

Kinda similar to trump. They claim to hate elites, politicians, etc even though trump is all of those things, and he actively donated to politicians over the years that they would brand as radical leftists or Rinos
@deadgerbil A man who shits in a gold toilet is relatable to a guy who lives in a trailer park.

@deadgerbil Very good observations - known, but never voiced.
I think most conservatives are just bandwagon followers. So why is there an Elon Musk bandwagon?

To some Musk is their idea of John Galt, hero of Atlas Shrugged. And there's some truth in that. His first business, Zip2, an online business directory, was successful and Musk personally made about $22M when it sold. He then started what morphed into Paypal, and cleared about $175 million when that sold. He then bought heavily into Tesla and then started SpaceX.

That's four different businesses brought up to large scale & profitability, three of which he was in from the very beginning. It's an awfully good track record, even with the caveats. The caveats are that Tesla benefited greatly from EV tax incentives (those were there for every fledgling EV maker though); and SpaceX benefited greatly from a billion or two in a series of NASA grants & contracts while getting started (AFAIK SpaceX bid competitively for the contracts).

I think cons see Musk as a poster boy for old fashioned capitalism. I think the truth is he's a poster boy for great engineering management, plus industry cooperating with government. I personally think that he personally is kind of an ass, and I will always credit him for dragging the world's auto industries kicking and screaming into the electric age.

Here's how Musk describes himself (at times; don't expect consistency)

@ElwoodBlues Interesting. I'm sure none of Musk's conservative fanboys know he said any of that. At least he recognizes that progress in new industries requires government support until the industry takes off and can be profitable enough to interest private investment.

He's a huge Ayn Rand fan.

@LeopoldBloom Musk, today, recommended Taiwan become “a special administrative zone” of China with an arrangement that could potentially be more “lenient” than Hong Kong. In other news, he also announced that the Tesla plant in China, is now the world's largest, and ships more cars than any other Tesla plant, and those are pre-ordered.

He previously recommended that Ukraine accept Russia's annexation of its land, and move on.
@Northwest I'm just glad this idiot wasn't born in the US, or we'd be looking at our next president.
Northwest · M
@LeopoldBloom An Amen to that.
Most of the people who worship him are the hyper capitalist crypto bros who also worship Jordan Belfort and Grant Cardone which explains alot.

And most of that is true except the Tesla thing. All Musk did was buy the company and lauched the Tesla he promised to the founder into orbit in a tantrum.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I see a lot of conservatives who are poor trailer park types who think Musk will end content moderation on Twitter and let Trump and Nazis and anyone else say anything without "censorship." Big tech censors liberals more than conservatives as the Facebook papers showed, but these guys think they're the most oppressed people in the world.
@LeopoldBloom Remember, these are the same people who think Trump is not an oligarch and is a man of the working class. Reasoning is not their strong point.
You've made a general statement, you hypocrite.
@Spoiledbrat Also, a hypocrite is someone who says one thing and does another. I don't hate big tech, so I'm not a hypocrite if I use it. I don't hate EVs, so I can drive one if I want. I do hate Twitter, and if Musk buys it, I'm not going to start liking it suddenly.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@LeopoldBloom Liberals tend to be invested in all three.
@justanothername I haven't run across too many liberals who worship Musk, although I'm sure some do.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
It's exactly the same phenomenon that finds people like you lionizing Democrat candidates like Jon Fetterman or Beto O'rourke in that they are supported and celebrated by the media and personalities that you find compelling and believable. Then you find yourself in an echo chamber that just reinforces what you already believe.
@SumKindaMunster At least you admit that conservative worship of Musk is due to an echo chamber.

Fetterman has won statewide office in PA, so it's not just an "echo chamber." And you would be hard-pressed to find a shittier candidate than Dr. Oz, although the Republicans in Georgia managed to.

Beto is overrated. He's not going to win in Texas, even against a POS like Abbott any more than he could beat an even worse POS like Cruz. He should have stayed in Congress and worked his way up that way.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
Well, I think they are attracted to his big-talk persona. What he does, what he believes, and his achievements and failures are less important to them.

As a full-fledged Moderate, I appreciate his business skills, but question his crippled view on key social issues and global dynamics. He seems more of an idiot savant.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
He looks like a squirrel in the face I don’t understand either, they tend to idolize him. The cars are a statue symbol for corporate Republican snobs, I’m guessing that’s how it got started.
@BackyardShaman Conservatives: "I hate EVs! Haha what happens when your EV is stuck in the snow, runs out of power, and you freeze to death? But Teslas are cool"
justanothername · 51-55, M
Hard to say. Republicans love their guns and big gas guzzling Chevy pick ups yet Elon is all about EV.
Republicans hate big tech with a passion yet Elon is worth Billions, as is Tesla.

Not much of a contradiction at all….
FurryFace · 61-69, M
my take on Elon Musk is that he's todays scape coat to use for new inventions , i mean how can one single man keep coming up with all these new technologies and stuff ?

I didn't know this was a thing so maybe you're lumping us all together.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
@Spoiledbrat it is a thing especially for real materialistic brats
@Spoiledbrat It's not liberals creaming themselves over the prospect of Musk buying Twitter. They think he will remove content moderation and turn it into a bigger version of Gab. The problem is, it's hard to attract advertisers as they don't want their ads next to posts by Nazis and jihadis.
Yes. That's the kill nature and bring on the fictional apocalypse boys club.
Cause Trump and Musk are both supporters of Putin, and most of the GOP is...
bookerdana · M
Hes rich 🤑 and promised to allow Trump back on Twitter
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
Musk is Trump in the larval stage.
He’s an Afrikaner, so they’re prepared to be sympathetic towards his status as an "oppressed white person".
Then of course, he’s rich.

@MarmeeMarch You think you're being sarcastic, when you're not.

Just admit it, you love Musk because his family made their fortune by forcing Black people to labor in their emerald mine.

@MarmeeMarch Good thing he was born in South Africa, or fanboys like you would want him to be president. You probably do anyway.
