Education should aim for preparing the young for their adult pursuits. Since different regions have differing predominant industries, natural environments, and varied legacy and historical working dynasticism of sorts - the centralization of education was a huge mistake.
Not just in terms of the idiosyncratics of thinking that uniformity is superior over diversification, intellectually. Almost every school it touched lost several high value areas of study in highly practical subjects.
Money was increased through the centralized belief how much, rather than how money was utilized mattered more in a given area.
The federalism of education was a glaring catastrophic failure by the progressive left. There's no room for debate here the school assessments and global rankings and costs are in fact, proof positive of it. The drop out rate is abysmal. The math and reading profficience has been lowered twice to hide the failure. Colleges are becoming a joke at this point.
Enough!
Those who argue the point made ought be scruitinized about why beyond their vapid assertions like nonsense about "uniform standards"
Which, by the way, never were done since it would be impossible even if it were cost allowable.

This is all a performance. The reality is public schools get their funding from local property taxes, not the federal government. Teacher salaries are determined and set by local school boards. The federal Department of Education provides standards (a good thing), subsidies for "special" education programs (a noble and necessary thing), and higher education grants that has (in the past) made the USA university education and research the envy of the world.
Luckily, he won't get very far in his quest to sink the USA to the bottom.

@MarkPaul Just 13.7% of all education funding comes from federal funds. It is not the sum involved, but what it is spent on (trying to give disadvantaged students an equal chance) that Trump objects to.

@SunshineGirl That's exactly it. He believes with all his corroded heart that by "stealing" money to those who he considers "not normal," he will be able to get away with it under the premise people are just like him and really only care about their own self-absorbed lives.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters earlier Thursday the executive order would not entirely shutter the agency but would "greatly minimize" it.
She also said the remaining agency would still oversee Pell Grants and student loans that provide financial aid for undergraduate students.
"It's not going to be shut down," Leavitt said. "Pell Grants and student loans will still be run out of the department in Washington, D.C., but the great responsibility of educating our nation's students will return to the states."
Trump said Thursday these programs and others that provide resources for children with special needs would remain but would fall under other agencies.
"They're going to be preserved in full and redistributed to various other agencies and departments that will take very good care of them," Trump said.

@sunsporter1649 I will believe that when I see it. If all its funding programs are going to remain intact, what the f**k is the point of dismantling the department?

Another promise kept 👏👏👏
The US used to rank no. 1 in education world-wide. Insert Jimmy Carter and the DOE in 1979. The US now spends more per student than any other country and in 45 years, goes from 1st to last among westernized nations.
Given the US spends so much, how is it that teachers complain about having to pay for school supplies out of their own pockets?
The DOE is another federal grift. May it rest in pieces.

Here is one of the jokes that Trump and Musk might be getting their jollies with.

Decentralizing the standards of education will create chaos.

@softspokenman
I disagree. Chaos is already in motion. Decentralizing the standards of education in America will only serve as a distraction from something else.

@swirlie It would be like removing the "Executive" branch of the Government.

No, because it's a domestic matter in a foreign country

Don't forget, Trump University was deemed a total fraud and was forced to shut down because the Professors had fake credentials.
