For what it’s worth, this is my analysis as a progressive Democrat.

Republicans are currently in a very weak (unpopular, it’s a vulnerable issue for them) spot on healthcare. They can’t support Romneycare because President Obama stole it and made it Obamacare, and they can’t support anything done by a black Democratic President. So they have to come up with a healthcare plan that’s more conservative than Romneycare/Obamacare, but the problem is nothing more conservative than that works. They’re generally kind of opposed to Medicaid because they believe that government can’t help people, especially not “lazy” poor people. And that’s all the analysis I have time for just now.

The short answer, I think, is self-interest. My observation is that healthcare in the USA is a vast and unwieldy enterprise supporting the livelihoods of millions. Which is fine, except that ordinary Americans pay for this through insurance and drug costs that are much higher than if they had been pooled and socialised by a strong central authority. Trump actually believes that the UK has screwed the American pharmaceutical industry over by using its purchasing strength to negotiate lower prices for patients. All that matters to him is the financial bottom line, not the health of his nation.

What kind of healthcare do you imagine? I'm certainly not a fan of American style but when the Canadian system fails Canadians have been known to go to the US for treatment.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@1930sfan Yeah I don't quite get your connection between human trafficking and healthcare. Most mental health care is worse than the disease.
1930sfan · 26-30, M
@hippyjoe1955 sorry for my spelling I do have autism and it shows sometimes what I'm trying to say is I would use Healthcare to try to end human trafficking
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@1930sfan OK I can agree with ending human trafficking. Not sure how that can be done so long as people want to enslave others they will.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
I look forward to reading the responses you receive. Your distinction between "Republican' and 'conservative' interests me.
@FreddieUK There actually used to be progressive Republicans, but the Tea Party (precursor to the MAGAs) ran them off.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@bijouxbroussard Thanks for explaining that. I remember the Tea Party and at that time thought things couldn't get worse. How wrong can one be? 😞
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@FreddieUK welllll
In my case lol.
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
nothing stopping you from paying for someone else's heathcare out of your pocket, so why aren't you?

why should it be the conservatives burden to pay for "free stuff" for everyone else?

I bet if we started garnishing wages of liberals and/or so called "progressives" (let's say 25-30% of their gross income) to fund this "free healthcare", they'd probably quit gaslighting conservatives over it... 🤔

Multiple reasons but the two big ones are .
Consevatives see economic struggles and character flaws.
Second and mkst inportantly they are the party of private buisiness interests and profiteering. They are the party of protecting the rich class, not of the interests kf the people.

On a smaller voter level. Many lower class conservarives just dont eant to see other people become equal to them or on a level playing field. They want to feel validated by having something others are denied. Even if it would also benefit them. For some it is conscious for others itnis subconcious.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@MethDozer Yes, reducing or eradicating poverty will sadly create an existential crisis for many conservatives.

Republicans are for billionaires and don't want healthcare for us.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@1930sfan the modern day republicans are infested with nazis. There's at least dozens of republican chapters in school so are getting into trouble for literal Nazism. It's gotten bad bad so I'm not trying to argue, it just is what is
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@BohoBabe Oh yeah there's been reagan era judges who have gotten attacked by today's republicans even.
1930sfan · 26-30, M
@SatanBurger there's a big difference between Republicans and conservatives
The GOP as it exists today is run by MAGAs, that’s why they’re racist, (otherwise they would’ve strengthened the ACA instead of branding it "Obamacare" and letting it die).

And it’s why they don’t care about women, children or affordable healthcare.

Referring to Republicans of the past who did care about this country is moot, because that’s just not who’s in charge of the party (or the country) now. 😔
Both sides are against anything that reduces the oppression.
There's no left to oppose them in politics.
It also would likely reduce the number of shootings. When a brand new AR 15 and a box of ammo is cheaper than therapy people are going to be incentivized to shoot their problems instead of going to therapy.
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@basilfawlty89 that's nifty, checkers. Im a combat veteran with PTSD. I've been on many. The ones the VA had me on were antipsychotics. When they asked me to hand over my firearms, I quit taking their drugs. They were taking me farther away from where I was trying to go.

Have you ever read the warning labels on your meds? They could be a clue to any bogus data saying shooters aren't on meds. I think they all warn of suicidal thoughts if you stop taking them abruptly.

No need to reply if it's going to be as ignorant as this last one. ..seriously
@Jayciedubb Sadly you are just proving that they were right to suggest you surrender your guns.

You have fallen so far down the rabbit hole you are showing obvious signs of paranoia and seeing conspiracies everywhere.

Nothings free. Get out of that mindset.

Obama came up with a bogus health plan and government screwed it up royally. Government needs to stay out of healthcare. No such thing as a free lunch. Look at social security. Its a ponzi scheme.
AbstractWave · 61-69, M
It’s not important to them as a political party..
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@1930sfan...and Eisenhower was pro union. None of whom (Lincoln, Roosevelt, Eisenhower) would stand a snowball's chance in hell of coming close to winning a primary election today.
MethDozer · M
@Jayciedubb they would all be called commies in fact
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@MethDozer ..I think all the way up to their poster boy, Ronald Reagan, ..especially with his take on gun control and the impact its had on the second amendment.
Musicman · 61-69, M
I honestly don't see the connection between healthcare and human trafficking.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@1930sfan Human trafficking is modern day slavery. That's why I didn't see a connection between it and healthcare.
1930sfan · 26-30, M
@Musicman no I think you're missing when I'm saying I'm staying at Healthcare could stop human trafficking
Musicman · 61-69, M
@1930sfan I firmly believe everyone has the right to their opinion. 😊
BohoBabe · M
Conservatives believe that poor people are weak, and the weak deserve to die. But they don't have the balls to say that, so I assume you won't get any real answers. You might just get stuff like, THE NEW DEAL DESTROYED THE BLACK FAMILY! Which nobody actually believes.
