is anyone else a progressive Republican?

What I mean by a progressive Republican—or, you could even call it a reform Republican—is someone modeled after figures like Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, or even FDR. Although FDR was a Democrat, he drew on many classical Republican principles. Essentially, this type of Republican is strongly opposed to slavery—or, in a modern context, human trafficking—firmly against corruption in general, and also supports traditional Republican issues such as gun rights and the Constitution.

The 5 founding principles of the Republican Party:
1. Constitutional governance
2. States Rights
3. Small government, individual rights with government out if your life
4. Non intervention foreign policy
5. Fiscal conservatism

I'm on board for all of that.

@BiasForAction tariffs predates the GOP by over 60 years. I'm glad you realize your error.
@Ken4family did you even read what I wrote about tariffs (vs protectionist tariffs) and Whigs (Clays American system embraced protectionist tariffs) and republicans (pro-protectionist tariffs for decades, adopting parts of the Whig platform ) and Lincoln (who proudly described himself as a Henry Clay Whig)? I’m guessing not. My point is that republicans change their beliefs like the dem party. There are no core beliefs, just a desire for power and a need to maintain two party control of elections. Prove me wrong

@BiasForAction again, thank you for admitting you were wrong.

Everything you referenced is from the past - most people in the world were not even alive when those politicians were in power. We are so far from most of those issues that it does even make sense - what intelligent person is still worried about who was on what side of slavery? We all need to get over it and deal with our reality as it stands today and will be tomorrow.

@AmericanAvenger human trafficking is the modern slavery and is the new coalition
AmericanAvenger · 56-60, M
@1930sfan And the number of Americans that are concerned or impacted by it is probably negligible in comparison to those issues that matter the most to the most. With the Trump Administration's management of the border, it means even less now.
An interesting idea.

The GOP is the only Republican party I am aware of anywhere that somehow started as a left wing party and ended up far right.

The modern Republican Party is nothing like the politics of those people. I know moderate Conservatives, but they despise the MAGA Republicans.
1930sfan · 26-30, M
@BohoBabe I think I can agree with you but I think there's always room to maybe change the Republican Party keep in mind I'm not talking about conservatives here I'm talking about Republicans in a classical sense
BohoBabe · M
@1930sfan Yeah, people who believe in Representative Democracy. I'm a Republican in that sense.
But as for the RNC, I don't think it's going to change anytime soon.

I‘m an avid supporter of a neoconservative & neoliberal Republican Party which would make me a Reagan-Bush (or McCain-Romney) Republican.
Ynotisay · M
There are no progressive Republicans. If you vote Republican you're voting against the Constitution. You're voting against stopping human trafficking and you're voting for the modern day version of slavery. You can try and deflect by going back 100 years but it means nothing in reality.
1930sfan · 26-30, M
@Ynotisay question for you who helped freed the slaves? and also who is the Republican who wanted more Healthcare? (cough cough Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt) I'm not talking about conservatives I'm talking about Republicans in a classical historical way
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
I don't like labels or having to take an oath to a label. That's the issue the maga-nuts have right now.
Hmmm, more of a Ronald Regan, Bush, John McCain type....
Lilnonames · F
i have progressive insurance
1930sfan · 26-30, M
@Lilnonames :) I get the joke its funny
Nobody is. Contradictory ethical precepts mean you lied.
@1930sfan not you, anyone. If you're progressive, you're not a Republican. They're two opposing ideas.
1930sfan · 26-30, M
@RoundandroundwegoAbraham Lincoln help freed the slaves and Teddy Roosevelt push for more Healthcare
@1930sfan and bipartisanly there's no coherent politics and we're going to kill the planet thusly.
