Just Stop Oil vandalise Stonehenge by spraying it with orange paint.

Yes, DRASTIC action needs to be taken to address the climate crisis, but...in this case...

WHY????
Matt85 · 36-40, M
How else are people gonna listen

we need to stop Taylor Swift and her private Jets
Illyria · M
@Peaceandnamaste of course it is. No children would pose like that, I mean the starving children in Africa thing. That’s just insulting. Also, you think the biggest pop star in the world would jeopardise her reputation like that? 😂
😂😂

That pic is as fake as Trump’s bone spurs.

@jackieash I think the people who actually believe that shit is real know full well that it isn't; but they WANT to believe it because they're jealous of her for whatever reason.

(plus how has she got hold of an ice cream cone in the middle of, supposedly, a destitute tribal village in the middle of nowhere?)
Vandalizing a 5000 year old historic site isn't going to win them any more support.
Vin53 · M
"Just stop oil"

Uses spray paint pressurized with petroleum product, capped with petroleum product, utilizing a straw and nozzle made of a petroleum product

Brilliant.
Luciebelle · F
@Vin53 Not agreeing with it, but to be fair it was flour based paint thrown from a paper bag, so they're not being inconsistent just bonkers.
Illyria · M
@Luciebelle it still could have done damage. There are several rare species of lichen on the rocks, which ironically are indicators of climate change. JSO expected the flour to “wash off in the rain” which could have caused significant damage to them. Luckily the stones have been cleaned with specialist air blowers
Luciebelle · F
@Illyria Yeah all I meant was it wasn't (I read) oil based paint. But still, I agree with you
BlueVeins · 22-25
The point is to force public attention back onto the subject of global warming and also drive up recruitment for more substantive actions (e.g. blocking coal plants) that screw over fossil fuel companies directly. Also, they like to do outrageous shit as a way of sorta pointing out how much more outrageous our climate policies are in comparison. "You're mad about some rocks getting spray painted but you're not mad about our government indirectly killing hundreds of millions of people and creating the worst refugee crisis in world history."
dale74 · M
@BlueVeins yeah let's watch them stop a coal train going into a coal plant
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
@dale74 happened here in Australia
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Illyria Spray paint would have been even more serious criminal damage due to being far harder to remove than the powder they did use.

I hope they are made to pay the cleaning costs.
calicuz · 56-60, M
Why is right, the "Ancients" have nothing to do with the issue. 🤷‍♂️
calicuz · 56-60, M
@whowasthatmaskedman

I can't argue with that. 🤷‍♂️😂
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@calicuz And dont get me started on those egyptian hieroglyphics. Pre spray paint graffitti.😷

What on earth does this solve? I’m genuinely curious as to how this had any effect on anything g other than making us hate whatever it is they support?
Sleepysheep · 26-30, M
@Illyria I have no hatred towards the people however. I believe they are mislead in how they represent themselves.

For example they have the right idea to save the environment so why not fund a project for a water/hydrogen fuelled engine and compete with the industry?

If they took this energy and time to study rather than vandalize they could make a real difference in the world.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Sleepysheep See, that's where I'm at with it. They picked a really stuріd way to protest.

I agree with you totally.
What a disgraceful thing to do, and I fail to see how anyone would condone such an act on a world heritage monument.
windinhishair · 61-69, M
Antics like this one won't help address ongoing global climate change.
Lostpoet · M
😑This is why we can't have nice things
Elessar · 26-30, M
The very group that is directly funded by oil tycoons, doing things under the flag of environmental activism that would polarize the general public against environmental activism.

Paint me surprised

whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Elessar But if you keep the community divided against itself, they wont blame you for the problem. A lesson many politicians around the globe have learned. (Or should I say, the money behind them)😷

It'll wash off next time it rains. Really not a big deal.

Do they know orange paint in an aerosol can is filled with petrochemicals
Penny · 46-50, F
Prolly getting paid to do it.
Peaceandnamaste · 26-30, F
Most don't know that "just stop oil" is actually funded by a billionaire oil baron. All they did is pissed off the real people who actually cared about the environment which are mainly pagans, witches and wiccans and druids and real environmentalists.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Peaceandnamaste Oh, fun! A false flag operation!
supersnipe · 61-69, M
Not sure this helps their cause!
I'll bet if it were any other color besides 'orange', you wouldn't have a problem. I have an idea. What if they sprayed it rainbow colored? You know, tutti fruiti.
@ArishMell I've seen it. It's amazing.

@LeopoldBloom It's impressive! Thankyou for that!

Richard65 · M
It was powder paint made from cornflower and washes away easily with water. The point is to grab the headlines and get people talking about it. Just like this.
Illyria · M
@Richard65 And will it achieve anything whatsoever? No. All it will do is piss off the people who might otherwise be sympathetic to their cause.
Richard65 · M
@Illyria ever heard PT Barnum's phrase, 'there's no such thing as bad publicity'?

Their aim is to push the subject firmly into the apathetic public's consciousness, which stunts like this achieve. The Suffragettes were also hated and considered an annoying public nuisance.
SW-User
What about compounds in spray paint? They are hazardous to the environment
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@SW-User As are the chemicals used to clean them off😷
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@SW-User @whowasthatmaskedman Possibly - but are also petroleum derivatives.

Don't tell Just Stop Oil though - they'd not understand it. They talk and act as if their science education stopped at the Infants' School "nature-table" level.

To be fair though, these lunatics did not use spray-paint on Stonehenge, but some sort of coloured powder that was soon, and easily, washed off.
@SW-User Supposedly they used paint made from cornstarch.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
This distruption vandalism is recent. It appeals to the mindles because its simpler to destroy than create or repair..😷
Nimbus · M
Have they nothing better to do?
Illyria · M
@Nimbus YES! They could target just about ANYONE else to make their message heard! Like Downing Street!
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
JSO are a clueless mob. Using things derived from oil and other fossil fuels to advocate for not using things made from oil and other fossil fuels.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@zonavar68 Indeed!

I expect most of their clothes are made from Nylon and other synthetic fabrics, too. And I wonder how they arrived at Stonehenge, right out in the countryside? On foot, wearing plastic-soled boots, or cycles perhaps with carbon-fibre frames? Or planned their escapade - using modern telephones etc. impossible without petroleum-derivate materials?

I wonder how many of them have even the most basic understanding of everyday science and engineering they should have been taught (or were but failed to learn) in school science and geography. Though I worry far too many people in politics, the Press and even civilised environmental campaigning are just as ignorant.

....

Some JSO vandals have just been jailed - rightly in my view although think massive fines, compensation orders and community-service orders would be better - for causing enormous disruption to many thousands of people using one of Britain's most important motorways.

I doubt it even dawned on them that that action would have wasted a very large quantity of petrol and Diesel fuels with needless proportional rise in CO2 pollution, as drivers tried to find alternative, much more difficult and congested routes. Still, the JSO fools were not paying for that fuel, so why would they care?
.....

Please don't get me wrong -

I know the prospect of artificial climate-change by burning vast amounts of hydrocarbon fuels is real and was first raised over 100 years ago.

Very real too, is pollution anyway in crowded cities, including occasionally, thick smogs. Hence measures like the Clean Air Acts, introduced in 1950s Britain after a terrible smog (Smoke+Fog portmanteau) exacerbated or caused many respiratory diseases, even fatalities, in London.

(Coal was still a major fuel or fuel-source industrially and domestically, in Britain at the time; while the Diesel engined vehicles then used did not have the sophisticated injection systems, particle-filters and NOx catalysers of their much more efficient, modern versions.)

What I do object to, is arguing technical matters from no basic technical knowledge; and I certainly have no time for vandalism and its dim-witted "direct action" apologias by the vacuous.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
One hopeful thing: other people at the site tried to stop them, weren't afraid to get involved and take a hand.
Doing stuff like that dose not help there cause. It turns people against them
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
They're just rocks
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@zonavar68 Your point?

Luckily English Heritage (the site's custodians) have been able to clean the mess off. I hope the Just Senseless Objectionables are made to pay the costs of doing so.

Are there a lot of druids in big oil executiveship?

I hope the paint is is not oil based 🤦
SandWitch · 26-30, F
Considering the beauty of the countryside in the background and the overall location, I think perhaps it's time to take those stone things down anyway and clear a big space for a nice 34 story condo building with penthouses and some retail shopping on the first floor.
JimBeam · M
Give them 20 years in prison.

@Ynotisay More to the point would be making them clear up litter and fly-tipping, and removing graffiti.

As for "cause", I am not sure they really have a genuine "cause". Or if they do, I don't believe they understand it.
Ynotisay · M
@ArishMell Yeah. I guess "cause" is sort of a general thing. Stop polluters is just a little vague. And that's why it's so futile. If there's no tangible, actionable outcomes from protests then people are just yelling to yell. And, in this case, virtue signaling along the way.
