Why is it a binary choice? Why not admit that immigration laws (1) have been discriminatorily weighted towards Western Europeans for centuries; (2) unrealistic re: the need for seasonal agricultural and hospitality employment since the end of the bracero program by JFK to appease unions; and (3) ignores the whole issue of employers' need for workers willing to work at low-paying jobs? And realistically factor in the humanitarian issues of those trying to escape poverty in totalitarian regimes that condemn people to lifetimes of poverty and persecution; fixing the asylum immigration courts for short, realistic decision making rather than years-long, drawn out, bureaucratic systems? Do that, then managing the southern border becomes as manageable as managing the northern border, and the air and sea ports.
@dancingtongue You said: "Don’t worry about that roommate law if you live in a student dorm or a group home, but why is this 60-year-old law on the books at all, you ask? A New York City rep cites safety concerns, and a former housing commissioner pointed to previous attempts to turn boarding houses into family homes. Although infrequently enforced, the law is occasionally called upon by agitated neighbors—or by tenants fed up with their landlord. Not that we’re encouraging that sort of thing."
Stacy does not understand where you are coming from. There are indeed laws of old that stay on the book and no one bothers to update it. There is a position in the government service for a guy on the English side of the channel to raise the alarm when he sees Napoleon and his army appearing. This job is still vacant.
Mexicans, and other central Americans, have been crossing back and forth across the border for about 300 years. The hysteria about securing the border is largely nonsense, an invention of right-wing politicians to manipulate their followers.
The south-west region was Mexican territory until the war of 1848, in which Mexico lost those lands. But many Mexicans still think of it as their territory.
I am in favor of sensible immigration restrictions. But I will never participate in hating immigrants. Whipping up fear and hate of immigrants is an evil act. Negotiation is the best way to manage the situation.
I can no longer tolerate any claim made by Donald Trump, as yesterday at the border, he claimed "they" are deporting criminals from prisons in Congo to the boarder too. Thus, there is no answer because there is no truth. Desperate ramblings of a Mad Man.
@RageAgainstTheMachine Coup? Insurrection? What other unrelated nouns can you grab from your media approved list of socialist comebacks? The discussion is about securing the southern border of the US. Focus.
There are no native Americans - everyone meandered here from someone else.
There were no Americans until 1776, when the colonists declared independence from Great Britain and established the country of the United States of America. Only Whites were Americans.
Hispanics living in American territory became Americans by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848).
Blacks became Americans in 1869.
Indians (not Asian Indians) became Americans in 1924.
Chinese immigrants could become Americans in 1943.
Well sure, ideally, but it’s not an easy problem to fix, and it has plagued previous administrations too. Democrats demonstrated their desire to solve the problem by writing a bill to attempt to solve the border crisis exactly the way Republicans said they wanted it resolved, and Republicans killed the bill because they are beholden to Donald Trump who told them to kill it because he calculated that it’s politically more advantageous to him to leave the border crisis as a campaign issue he can use to clobber President Biden with.
@justanothername As long as Biden is in charge of the border deportations are down and crossings are up. When Trump was in charge of the border deportions were up and crossings were down. Which one do you think had more human trafficking?
@GlitterEater True, but too much immigration all at once can be bad. Though I blame the migrant crisis on Trump for destabilizing Latin America when he was president.
The safest borders are the most open. American people don't mean safety. They meant to harm people and get away with it. "Security". Whenever you are at war you feel safe. My safety is your enemy.
