Pre democracy, there was an argument against the masses voting because they were unsound minds, unqualified to know what was best for a country.

Reading politics posts here add substance to that concern. Every slack jawed idiot has a vote to cast. And that’s possibly why things are as they are.

Perhaps democracy has had its day.

I think it's one of these situations that's bad in both cases.

If you add rules to deny certain groups from voting then some politicians would definitely take advantage of that like some right wingers trying to push for murder charges for women who get abortion so they wouldn't be able to vote.

But if allowed any drooling idiot to vote some politicians "probably all" will try their hardest to brainwash and basically mind control people to vote for them.

American is fucked in the ass in both cases

That is why we have Rishi Sunak in the UK. We are unqualified to know what is best for the country.

Citizenship used to carry responsibilities .

@JSul3 if you’re looking for a point to any of this you came to the wrong place brother . Hajajaj

Even slack jawed idiots (of which every modern democracy has a preponderance) can exercise a thoughtful right to vote in a country with a) a good general primary and early-secondary education which b) has an emphasis on civics and c) a non-exclusive guiding philosophy (be it a religion or otherwise, including a civic religion of the sort particularly strong in the USA).

The problem isn't idiots voting, it's idiots being kept as idiots by a state apparatus which can't be bothered uplift but rather hopes to push everyone else into the mire with them.

Otherwise you're right. Feudalism run on a principle of noblesse oblige all the way, please.
The elites and the masses always have and always will be at odds. That's why elections are rigged. The issue isn't democracy itself.
@BizSuitStacy Was the last election rigged?
Barny52 · 56-60, M
Didn’t Churchill say something similar ?? The MSM run elections and get anyone they want elected
Oh absolutely- as I said why not just let the government pick my career path for me? Why not just let them install cameras in my flat too?

We should all be woken up at a certain time to do a government sanctioned routine
.. so cosy 🤗
@BritishFailedAesthetic Why would there be cameras in your flat? Do you suppose you’re that interesting?
@DazzaTheHutt Oh I am 😏
@BritishFailedAesthetic All evidence to the contrary

Everybody has to vote otherwise where do you draw the line? At a certain level of education? That's no measure of intelligence, for example most educated US citizens seem to think Socialism is bad when it is almost a paragon set of rules in it's barest form.
Having decided that everybody should vote how to make the system work? How about each party sets out a clear set of policies in simple English, the policies should be reviewed by an independent body and anybody can call foul on any part of the policy so that it has to be reviewed. Then people are encouraged to vote for the party whose policies they most like and not on red/blue/green, best looking candidate, who your family has always voted for or some other such nonsense.

That's what happens when people aren't truly passionate about something. Democracy is a popularity contest. It's why gatekeeping is ultimately necessary. The masses ruin literally everything.

Free public school for all was supposed to equip people with enough education to be fit to vote. Also, American tradition holds there shall be "No taxation without representation."
@badminton And look where it’s gotten you. People burning their own cities and storming their own institutions. People without medical insurance with rickets. An eternally divided house.
Its not a democracy its a republic, a constitutional federal republic to be specific
badminton · 61-69, MVIP
@Mistakesmakeus We have a representative democracy. And a Bill of Rights that defines and protects the citizen's rights and civil liberties.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@badminton Depending on who gets to define them and whom they want them to apply to.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Mistakesmakeus Oh, get out of here with that bullshit. A republic is just a representative democracy.
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
The average of the masses is a common level of intelligence that while balanced is not necessarily ethical.
The informed public was always a prerequisite to good governance in a democracy.
The Americans killed the truth to be safe from democracy, but it's not like you get anywhere telling them. This is their finest hour.
Unsound minds are everywhere in the USA and the things people should be doing are fringe, radical woke pie in the sky never going to see that.
Ynotisay · M
And to add to that, usually 40 percent can't even be bothered with voting in a Presidential election. Far less for state and local elections.

I don't think it's Democracy. I think it's people. And we absolutely get what we deserve because of it.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
The issue isn't education but where people get their education.

Some people get all their information from the internet and there are just so many lies and conspiracy theories.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
Trouble is you elect 'slackjawed idiots' professing to 'know better than idiot voters' and THAT'S why you're in the mess you're in.
The fact you haven't figured THAT out speaks volumes
You don’t need to vote.. we’ll supply the dictator tyrants..
stay home… put your feet up.. relax

Trumpism has many causes, one of them being boredom.
