I don't know why people think direct democracy is at all good. What evidence is there that the majority know what's best for them?

It just sounds nice to say things like "government for the people by the people". In reality, I see no reason why everyone should have the right to vote. To be honest, I'm not even sure if I think I personally should have the right to vote.

Think of it like this: Do you think a body studying quantum theory would or should let anyone join? Or do you think they should only let people who have expertise in quantum theory? Similarly, why would anyone be allowed to vote? Why the hell do I even want a government run by me when I personally don't understand economics or civics to a level worth any real note?

exactly there should be a strict criteria to vote, the ideal government is a technocracy

One dude hear said I wanna live in North Korea

@BRUUH i theory, that is what the US has, it is a representative government. Even if we elect the representative or senator directly they only state they will work for our benefit.
BRUUH · VIP
@BritishFailedAesthetic Lmfao, do you have an argument for why my ideas are bad? Why would my ideas lead us to a North Korean style dictatorship? I do not believe in a divine rigth by blood system. My beliefs are barely different than what Confucius or plato thoght. So, can you contruct a syllogism debunking the assertions I put forth? Just wondering if you are capable, not hate directed at you at all <3

This idea was already explored thousands of years ago. All the faults of democracy were discussed by the ancient Greeks who invented it. The consensus of thought is that the best government is a an enlightened despot but the problem with that is human nature which inevitably is corrupted by absolute power . The next best and more realistic solution is democracy where the majority is ruled by a single
Leader for a limited period of time and that is the best system humanity has found to govern itself to date.
ViciDraco · 41-45, M
I personally think democracy is a good idea for setting the goals of a society. I think technocracy is better for determining how to reach those goals.

As with many things, hybrid approaches tend to help manage the flaws of opposing systems.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@BRUUH Thanks I was trying to keep it respectful 🤗
BRUUH · VIP
@SatanBurger Yeah I honestly understand and empathize with the ppl on here who are mad at me. They think I am authoritarian, and so I deserve hate. Honestly, maybe they are right. Maybe I am authoritarian?
Like I think the world is so hellish that I just want someone to make it change, and I do mean MAKE it change. But then again, that's how dictators rise up. AT THE SAME TIME, maybe there is a reason for that?
It is true there is this historical cycle of chaos and decay followed by a strongman rising up and ceasing power. But maybe that cycle SHOULD happen, but we should just try precent innocent death? The romans would suspend democracy when war was at their gates. Maybe the same should happen,
I honestly don't know. I do think "equality" is a very outdated idea we are only forcing to stay alive cause it sounds nice. I don't mean racial equality, but equality in terms of people and inaliable rights as opposed to privileges gained on merit.
BRUUH · VIP
@SatanBurger But just so i'm not misunderstood, my ideal system is not fascist. My IDEAL system is tribal. Like clans, ruled by a patriarch and matriarch, with local shamans guiding the people spiritually, and a warrior class. An anrcho-primitivist society seems better than the age of kali yuga we live in now
Absolutely! In fact while we're at it I think the government should choose my career path for me and have cctv in my house- with audio too so they can let me know if I'm doing anything wrong.

Let's also have a social credit score, make sure you're a good dog! Come on boys walkies!
BRUUH · VIP
@BritishFailedAesthetic Hell I think a Clan system is pretty based. On some ancient japanese shit where we are all members of large clans ran by a badass patriarch. That shit is str8 🔥. Democracy is comparatively lame
@BRUUH You sound like a Communist Andrew Tate fan 😂
BRUUH · VIP
@BritishFailedAesthetic I think Andrew Tate has many destructive messages about the youth. If anything, it's the fact that a guy like him is so loved that should convince YOU that "the people" or "the common man" is not the one's who should run the economy.
drymer · 56-60, M
The evidence...? Looks like you don't know much about world around you. If you knew what countries enjoy the highest standard of living (not only in $$ value, but according to other indicators such as life satisfaction and personal fulfillment), you'd see they are ALL functioning democracies. Also remember that democracy is not just about "voting". The whole thing about "government by the people for the people" is that all government institutions focus on improving the standards of livings of all society.
BRUUH · VIP
@drymer I'm not suggesting that I only want educated people voting. Plenty of rich educated cocksuckers only vote cause they want a tax break. That's why I want both empathetic AND educated people. People who understand and care.
Penny · 46-50, F
@BRUUH are you joking. The chinese are all brainwashed and probably mostly like manufacturing slaves to put china in such good financial standing
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@BRUUH
The nations with the best standards of living in terms of economics would be Scandinavian ones. But why would you think having only educated empathetic people voting wouldn't produce the same ones?

Scandinavia, particularly my adopted home of Norway, is the way it is because solidarity is still a live concept and large differences in income and well being are regarded as undesirable and a sign of poor governance. We really are "all in this together" as David Cameron famously said. In the UK that was simply risible, here in Norway it is broadly accepted as true and desirable. Cooperation is built in, competition is for sporting events.

The question is how does one create such a social atmosphere. Restricting voting to a few people who pass some kind of test isn't going to do it.

Don't misunderstand me, Norway is not a utopia and plenty of things don't work as well as they should.

How does it become a direct democracy just because everyone can vote ? The voting system of electing a representative is in itself not democracy for it is only an elected oligarchy. A direct democracy is where people vote for policies, decide budgets, appoint ministers and even decide on death sentence and so on. Technology has arrived for elections can just be from the app.

But yes, current system is flawed in many ways. In fact people can also be made to vote NO for each candidate and the winner is one who has more yes than no. That way people get to vote on all candidates.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Most democracies are not actually 'direct'. We elect a proxy to represent our interests in government in the way she/he considers most effective. Most of us do not have the time or knowledge to make decisions about the economy, national security, social welfare, etc, individually. Every so often a major decision is placed directly before 'the people' (such as the UK's membership of the European Union) and chaos ensues because people forget how to engage in rational and respectful debate 😐
The show "who wants to be a millionaire" is evidence. The audience was typically correct over nineteen of every twenty times.
Crowds have been guessing that weight of the prize bulls at state fairs since around 1900. The crowd almost always gets closer to the real weight of the bull than anyone in the crowd, including experts.
Democracy isn't optional it's how humans do if we're doing right.

I think that there's no one political system that is all the way perfect, I just think that some are slightly better at rights than others even though all political systems benefit only a select group of people while others will get their rights stomped on.

It's just that I think that some are better than others. For instance, I'd take democracy over theocracy any day.
Move to Oceana. You'll love Big Brother!!

Laws are made to protect the minority, but the majority elects those who make the laws. 😂
specman · 51-55, MVIP
@LoneVoice The reason laws are made is not to protect the minority from the majority. Without laws it would be chaos.
@specman Laws are made to prevent the majority from trampling over the minority. Laws are made for everyone to OBEY.
specman · 51-55, MVIP
@LoneVoice nope!
Penny · 46-50, F
So you think people in general are too stupid to vote. I dont think direct democracy is a bad idea personally even if its just to let our wants be known then politicians to figure out thebest way to achieve it if its possible pr compromise if its not but give reasons why
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Penny How about the right to have access to contraceptives? The right to go to the church of your desire? The US Constitution was written to protect the minority from a simple majority.
Penny · 46-50, F
@samueltyler2 idk. Id think majority rule would still be fair but then that could cause division.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Penny could be, if people would be fair to those in the minority. never forget that if you are ina minority, you hope someone will protect you. There is the parable that says that, i paraphrase, i didn't do anything when they took away the neighbor down the street, i didn't do anything when they took away my neighbor, who will protect me when they come for me?
Theyitis · 36-40, M
Because the government makes decisions that, for better or for worse, profoundly affect your life. The founding fathers shared your concern about ignorant people voting, and their solution to that was “free” (paid for by your tax dollars) public education that would teach you everything you need to know to make informed choices at the polls. Ideally that’s how it ought to work. Unfortunately, public education is often poorly funded in some areas, and some politicians like to try to control what is and is not being taught in public schools; however, it’s not a huge concern for me because most of the ignorant weed themselves out anyway by being too apathetic to show up and cast a ballot.
There's a difference between direct democracy and direct vote for the President.
Two wolves and a lamb voting on whats for dinner. LOL
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard... ever. Maybe you shouldn't be able to make any decisions to live your life since you don't understand much of anything. No offense.
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
We should have tests put in place so people can vote. Whenever I bring this up, stupid people think it'll somehow be rigged against black people.

@Emosaur 1)IF someone understands? Most people don't understand, especially in North America. 2)You commit the false dichotomy fallacy by saying I support dictatorship as evident by me for being on board with Direct Democracy. There is representative democracy; there is anarchy; there are many other forms of government. You argument has holes; go correct them.

@Emosaur I specifically said "direct" democracy. There are many forms of democracy. Therefore, you are wrong and my post doens't imply it. You were also wrong by commited the black or white/either or/false dichotomy fallacy. You rebuttles are looking weak; go make them stronger.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
You'd prefer we stick to the system we have now, with a combination of elected and unelected people making our decisions for us? Because that's working out real nice, isn't it?
BRUUH · VIP
@LordShadowfire No. It's a false dichotomy to suggest I either like the current one or direct democracy. I want quality votes over quantity votes.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@BRUUH Either you want direct democracy or you don't. That's not a false dichotomy, or even a false dilemma, which is what you meant. And if you don't want direct democracy, what do you want?
BRUUH · VIP
@LordShadowfire Not what we have no. Maybe I want a monarchy; that's neither direct democracy nor what we have now. Maybe I want fascism; that's neither direct democracy or what we have now. Maybe I want the same system the USSR has; that's neither direct democracy or what we have now. Because these other options exist, saying I either want the current system or DD, IS to lay out a false dichotomy.

But to answer your question as to what I do want? I don't know exactly, but the idea that the majority is good seems silly. People are dipshits.
Renaci · 36-40
We should have a kakistocracy. Oh wait most governments throughout history and even today have been that!
