I don't know why people think direct democracy is at all good. What evidence is there that the majority know what's best for them?

It just sounds nice to say things like "government for the people by the people". In reality, I see no reason why everyone should have the right to vote. To be honest, I'm not even sure if I think I personally should have the right to vote.

Think of it like this: Do you think a body studying quantum theory would or should let anyone join? Or do you think they should only let people who have expertise in quantum theory? Similarly, why would anyone be allowed to vote? Why the hell do I even want a government run by me when I personally don't understand economics or civics to a level worth any real note?

So you think people in general are too stupid to vote. I dont think direct democracy is a bad idea personally even if its just to let our wants be known then politicians to figure out thebest way to achieve it if its possible pr compromise if its not but give reasons why

@Penny the founders of the US were afraid that a small majority could imping upon the "God-given rights" of the minority.

@samueltyler2 im not sure what you mean

@Penny let us say that 51% of the population decides that we all must wear crosses around our necks 24/7. How do you think the other 49% might feel, particularly the non-Christians. I could go on with other rights.

@samueltyler2 oh i see you dont like majority rule. that is a valid concern but in the case of the US with our constitutional rights guaranteed there would never be such silly rules. can you think of a more reasonable example of where majority rule would be unfair?

@Penny Well not just to dumb, but also too selfish and immoral to be trusted to care if what they vote for is good for people other than them

@BRUUH dont get me wrong, with how a lot of people seem i think people just might be too stupid to vote lol buuut, in the interest of fairness and equality their vote should be valid too no matter how selfish or moronic or self serving lol. but then thats probably why im not a politician lol

@Penny How about the right to have access to contraceptives? The right to go to the church of your desire? The US Constitution was written to protect the minority from a simple majority.

@samueltyler2 idk. Id think majority rule would still be fair but then that could cause division.

@Penny could be, if people would be fair to those in the minority. never forget that if you are ina minority, you hope someone will protect you. There is the parable that says that, i paraphrase, i didn't do anything when they took away the neighbor down the street, i didn't do anything when they took away my neighbor, who will protect me when they come for me?
