Most democracies are not actually 'direct'. We elect a proxy to represent our interests in government in the way she/he considers most effective. Most of us do not have the time or knowledge to make decisions about the economy, national security, social welfare, etc, individually. Every so often a major decision is placed directly before 'the people' (such as the UK's membership of the European Union) and chaos ensues because people forget how to engage in rational and respectful debate 😐
