Well, as someone in the labour relations field, trade unions certainly have their place but like anything there are pros and cons when you scratch beneath the service. In terms of giving workers a voice where they had none, yes they have provided an important service. In terms of driving up costs for consumers, creating unnecessary conflict between companies and their workers, and holding out for a level of entitlements that have literally bankrupted some companies their negative influence cannot be overlooked.

@MarkPaul They will argue and argue, but they never win and they never learn. You really are smart and you know how to marshall the facts for an effective argument. By the time they figure that out, its too late.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@FrogManSometimesLooksBothWays figure what out? All he does is post "baby Trump" posts. That's hardly journalism. Mark is a right wing hack that's just jealous of Trump, because both are narcissists and Trump has more popularity.
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@basilfawlty89 Been saying this for awhile, and he is arrogant and delusional enough to believe he is actually a rival to Trump.
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
Unions are more corrupt now than when they were run by the mob. They don't protect workers (OSHA does that now), they just extort companies and employees, drive businesses overseas towards cheaper labor, and raise costs for end customers.
They should ban unions altogether, or at the very least, heavily restrict them.

@Stargazer89 decent wage, decent work hours, good working conditions, paid holidays. The rights we all take for granted
@Loopysoutherner if a job doesn't give you those, get a different job. No need for unions
Loopysoutherner · 56-60, F
@Stargazer89 it's unions that gave workers those rights
helenS · 36-40, F
Capitalism needs unions, because the capital tends to ruin its own source (the working class).
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@SW-User It is not just something from the past. You can see countries where unions have been decimated like the USA that are reverting back to Victorian era practices. Some states have brought back indentured service, debtors prison, and some are even trying to roll back child labour laws.

@MalteseFalconPunch Never stand for anything? That's a bit ambiguous. I guess you mean never stand for political office? No, I wouldn't either. I pretty much despise our 'democratic' political systems (not ALL politicians) but see no way of changing them - short of revolution, which seldom improves things..

unfortunately they've changed to much
ElwoodBlues · M
@MarineBob It's true many unions became corrupt. But I still think the whole reason we had a blue collar middle class was because of unions in manufacturing industries. When unions weakened and businesses started to offshore their manufacturing, it cut prices in the short term and hollowed out our middle class in the long term.
Is there any way to get those manufacturing jobs back? I truly wonder.

MarineBob · 56-60, M
@ElwoodBlues need a big import tax with no waivers. remember the automotive industry bailout? gave them tons money GM invested in the mexico plants, manufacturers are still using Chinese semi-conductors
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
Sometimes I think better and sometimes not so good . Sadly in the uk their just a bloody nuisance as there is forever strikes especially by the rail and transport unions who seem to think their hard done by and arnt . They get way above the average wage its just bloody greed because they know they can hold the country to ransom they make me sick.
Loopysoutherner · 56-60, F
@Really what question was that?
Loopysoutherner · 56-60, F
@Rhode57 the trade unions for nurses should be doing their job to improve wages. It's mick lynchs Job to improve the rights of rail workers
Loopysoutherner · 56-60, F
@Rhode57 inflation is rising up to 11 percent but not the train workers wages
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
A capitalist dream. And let's remember the union organizers and members who died fighting for workers' rights.
Loopysoutherner · 56-60, F
@ChipmunkErnie the top five are now part of working life
SW-User
@Loopysoutherner Where did you copy and paste that from?
Loopysoutherner · 56-60, F
@SW-User what?
SW-User
I agree, in principal, but in the uk at present we are seeing the ugly side of the unions, in particular the Transport Workers union. They have already had three days of strikes, with all that implies for innocent travellers, and another one next week. The sad thing is that the union bosses want this and are flexing their muscle against an unpopular government.
Loopysoutherner · 56-60, F
@SW-User how do you know He didn't try to negotiate earlier? Not uncommon for capitalist bosses to ignore the workers unless action is taken
SW-User
@Loopysoutherner Capitalist bosses...what is this, the 1800s? Unions yeah...bosses boo!! Come on, really? The unions see a weak and unpopular givernment and want to give ut a good kicking.
Loopysoutherner · 56-60, F
@SW-User ye what would you call them? We live in a capitalist country with one per cent of rich people on top whilst the majority are poor and always working. I love how stupid mick lynch is making tories look
SW-User
Mick Lynch salary £84,000, plus free travel and grace and favour london union flat worth £5 milliion. Poor little put upon worker...
SW-User
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Thanks! Shame i don't give a toss ha ha...stick to US issues and you might be better off!
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@SW-User Wow. You are the one who sounds like a Yank with your "go back to your country!" childishness when you lose.
Loopysoutherner · 56-60, F
@SW-User how's he a bully? Because he's wiping the floor with tories?
Roundandroundwego · 61-69
Like my working life. I get no sick days, even tho it's the law -. I'm not an employee in any building I clean -. Seven days a week, no vacation, ever -. No sick days, people crowded into a closet, no masks! Whatever. You real people need untouchables like me in every single place YOU work!
Really · 80-89, M
@Roundandroundwego My condolences, and congratulations on your work ethic. Yours is is an excellent example of cases where union-type leverage is badly needed.
Roundandroundwego · 61-69
@Really I work alone and have never seen a coworker! I have seen teams of managers. We all do. It's perfect. A Texas company owns my job in a blue state, and the people I serve are educated, liberal academic union members!
Budwick · 70-79, M
I'm generally not in favor of unions.
They had a place a long time ago.
Not so much anymore.

Loopysoutherner · 56-60, F
@Budwick Unions are as relevant and as possible needed as ever
Budwick · 70-79, M
@Loopysoutherner You and a handful of Marxists seem to be the only ones that think so.
That's OK. You are certainly entitled to your incorrect opinions.

Loopysoutherner · 56-60, F
@Budwick if not for unions workers rights would cease to exist
AbbySvenz · F
You and your kids would work 80 hours a week with no benefits, probably 🤷♀️
Loopysoutherner · 56-60, F
@southbeachguy none of that innovation and productivity would have happened without the working class people

@Loopysoutherner What about aspirational working class, if whom there are many. Including myself
Loopysoutherner · 56-60, F
@SW-User you mean those who wish to have a fulfilled life?

like child labor, no weekends no work safety no 40 hour week.

Union bullies at it again in England...bus workers this time. Pathetic...
SW-User
@Loopysoutherner This is getting tediious now. Workers hurray...bosses boo. Come on, try harder.
Loopysoutherner · 56-60, F
@SW-User weird that you claim to support Labour but hate workers and unions
Loopysoutherner · 56-60, F
@SW-User how come you hate workers and unions so much?
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
You would be working 12hrs, 7 days a week beside 12 year olds.
SW-User
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I can't believe this is a serious comment!!
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@SW-User It is true. Your ignorance and belief in the fairytale that modern day oligarchs are saints is not my concern.
The US where unions have been all but wiped out proves my point.
Literally the only reason why labour relations are any better now is because the capitalist class were forced to concede.
