Well where I live, they're called Mexican restaurants because we actually are all Mexican 🤷 it's like the majority here. I've never in my life heard of a "spanish restaurant" or even stuff like "puerto rican restaurant" or "dominican restaurant" 😅 I don't think they even exist here lol
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@ChiefJustWalks you don’t have to call them Dominican or Puerto Rican 😂😂😂 you just say Latino or Spanish restaurant. Because how do you know if they’re Mexican or not?
But I understand if you come from certain states like Texas is a good example. Where are you from?
It’s very offensive to go around calling people Mexicans who aren’t Mexican. It also makes the person look uncultured and ignorant

@DeluxedEdition well I would know if they're Mexican or not... because I'm Mexican 👌 & yeah I understand the culture thing but imo "latino restaurant" just sounds silly. If anything, they should just learn the actual ethnicity 🤷 because if I heard somebody call a Mexican restaurant a "latino restaurant" around here I'd be kinda bothered by that 😂 because that also sounds uneducated but at least its not as bad as being completely wrong lol. & You can't call them all "spanish restaurant" either because how do you know if they're spanish or not? Only Spaniards are Spanish
I'm in Arizona though. We're mostly Mexican here

ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
@WaryWitchWandering lmao I do that too but on purpose 😂 I'll walk into a Mexican place like "Can I get a carny asaduh case of dillas?" & The looks I get is hilarious to me 🤣

Wait what no
If there is a Guatemalan restaurant don't call it Spanish or Mexican you call it Guatemalan.

We do have Spanish restaurants in, the US, which serve the cuisine of Spain, such as paella. I would never refer to any restaurant with Mexican or Latino cuisine as "Spanish." To me, that sounds like referring to an American restaurant as British. We are no longer colonies of European powers. (I would also never refer to a Spanish restaurant as Mexican.)
If I refer to a Mexican restaurant, I do specifically mean Mexican. I will refer to a Cuban restaurant as Cuban, a Nicaraguan restaurant as Nicaraguan, etc. Lumping them all together as "Latino restaurants" would be like lumping together Italian, French, and German restaurants as "European." I could do that, it but I don't see it being very helpful.

@BluntSm0ker you're right 😂 technically a "Spanish restaurant" means food from Spain lol. That word doesn't cover all latinos
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I went to a Peruvian restaurant I while back. Yes it is annoying. I would like to call an Italian restaurant a French one, what's the difference :P
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
@JimboSaturn right?!?
AngelKrish · 26-30, M
I agree and they also assume that all Indians are dark skinned or if anyone is fair then he/she is not pure Indian!
So i wanna clear that there are variety of appearances of Indian people ,some look like Asians too!
Plus some people assume that India is poor country and there are not good houses or living style or development!
India is one of the fastest developing country and there are so many places where are hitech companies are investing and common people lives with very good lifestyle!

Where I live we have several Mexican restaurants, several El Salvadoran restaurants, and two Spanish restaurants.
nonsensiclesnail · F
South American restaurant and Spanish restaurant would be totally different than a Mexican restaurant.
How do you feel about taquerias when they sell cheeseburgers?
I guess all I'm really asking, only not in type but in my head, Who calls themselves a Mexican restaurant that is not one? Im just confused, not nearly as much of an ass as I sound.

@nonsensiclesnail That’s right because if it were Spanish food from Spain nobody would be eating it
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@nonsensiclesnail you don’t sound like an ass 🫂 😄 Ty for commenting ❤️

Then you would hate Texas
TexChik · F
@DeluxedEdition New Mexico? Arizona? Nevada? California? And thanks to our Governor now Chicago and DC!
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@TexChik I would kinda assume the states touching Mexico and around that general area were primarily Mexican that’s usually the case
TexChik · F
@DeluxedEdition so you’re not offended here? 🤠 Good to know
Elessar · 26-30, M
Spanish and Mexican food are two completely different, independent things lol, the distinction is absolutely meaningful.
It's as if we unified French and Italian kitchens under the sign of "European restaurants", and then serve you pizza with soup and some weird smelly cheese of their there.. 🥴

Burger joint? Ever smoked one
AnonymousJSS · 22-25, F
So mf true
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
People do this with a lot of different ethnic foods… like some people around here will call anything Asian “Chinese food”
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@WaryWitchWandering yes absolutely
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
all the Mexican restaurants here are owned/operated by Mexicans/Mexican-Americans, and they call it Mexican food... 🤷♂️
Slade · 56-60, M
@wildbill83 in NYC most of the Mexican joints are run by the Chinaman
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
I'm pretty sure calling Taco Bell a Mexican restaurant is more insulting to Mexicans than calling an actual Mexican restaurant a Mexican restaurant...🤔
black4white · 56-60, M
Its a category....just like women clothing or kids clothing.... just a category
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@black4white it most certainly is.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Maybe that's how the owners refer to their business
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
Sometimes it is @MarineBob

Because Spanish restaurants are not big in the USA and Mexican ones are.
It seems like you are just looking to be offended.
There are 3 Mexican restaurants in my area and no Spanish ones.

Maybe it’s because it’s a Mexican restaurant. Got something against Mexicans?
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Carissimi if it’s a Mexican restaurant then it’s a Mexican restaurant.
It’s very ignorant, offensive and uncultured to go around calling / assuming all Latino people Mexicans.

Ummm.. it's there on the sign outside the Latino eatery..
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
Maybe because it is on the front door?
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
I’m guilty
RocktheHouse · M
If it says Mexican Restaurant, it's a restaurant that sells Mexican food. Different countries do have different popular dishes, e.g., Puerto Rico has Mofongo and arroz con gandules. If you go to a Puerto Rican restaurant, you will find those dishes.
Spanish food would be food from Spain not Latin America.

aboveaverageaveragejoe · 51-55, M
Because when we go to Mexican restaurants we expect fajitas and enchilladas which are of Mexican origin and certainly not Spanish, plus you're not going to find paella at a Mexican restaurant. Not in Texas anyway. You're not likely to find fajitas at the El Salvatorian restaurant close by but at the Cuban place either.
Maybe you're the confused one. Nobody assumes all Asians are Chinese. Nobody i know anyway. Maybe you need more educated friends.

ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
@aboveaverageaveragejoe cool 🤷 I don't really give a fuck but thanks
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
@aboveaverageaveragejoe I know a lot of older people that take all ethnicities and kinda group em without knowing or caring to know
My father in law is a racist (and he thinks Italians rule the world)… my husband isn’t at all, and his mother is dating a younger black man (his parents are divorced)
Some people are just plain ignorant in general, they don’t care to learn or know more. They make judgment off of their tiny little world they placed around them

@WaryWitchWandering yeah well you wouldn't call a Korean restaurant Japanese just because they're both in area or because they serve rice lol. I eat cuisine from many counties
Of course one thing that we've not talked about is TexMex which is a different beast.
A lot of older people are racist and i can understand why, but times chance and so much attitudes. The current generation cannot be held responsible for what their great grandparents did.

Because thats what there called
[image/video deleted]
Lilnonames · F
@DeluxedEdition then i dont understand
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Lilnonames if a restaurant isn’t a self proclaimed Mexican restaurant you can’t just call it “Mexican”
It’s not Mexican. Mexicans aren’t the only Latino people. There’s Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Colombians, Peruvians, Argentinans, Peoppe from Guiana who also sometimes consider themselves Indian
You can’t go around lumping people together with no consideration to their identity. it’s disrespectful
