In spite of the fact it wasn't a complete success they got a lot of data from the flight.

@Repete All it takes is for one crewed mission to go bad.
Repete · 61-69, M
This is true but that’s why test flights are done.
Same with his space ships dragon whatever that goes to the space station regularly now taking astronauts to and from it.@LordShadowfire

@Roundandroundwego 3’,12” hmm. sounds like 4 feet to me
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Was it electric rocket?
ron122 · 41-45, M
@MrBrownstone Biden wants all rockets to be electric by 2032.🤣
SomeMichGuy · M
@MrBrownstone No. Those would be in space.
Olderguy · 61-69, M
Was a good launch. Next time it will be a good landing.
FreestyleArt · 31-35, M
At least it still went up. It was almost a success but Elon can take it as a successful Test and still smoking a cigar.

@MissTaken When Mr Edison was working on the light bulb trying to figure out a filament, he said He now knows 92 items that won't work not 92 failures. Good thinking?
ron122 · 41-45, M
Doesn't this go against the dems great climate hoax?
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@ron122 I know you don't get mad at idiots. That's why you get so mad at me.
ron122 · 41-45, M
@LordShadowfire And that went right over your head.🤣

What is Elon musk's obsession with space? He already owns most of THIS planet, does that not satisfy his greed so he wants to own TWO or more planets? 🤨
And they’re pretending it was a success. Exploding vehicles are always a success…
Ynotisay · M
@BoredDarkLord My take, although I could be totally wrong, is that they discussed in advance how to behave in the event of any kind of failure. And that means any failure would be spun as a success. The reactions just struck me as being too immediate. Felt contrived.
turbineman40 · 80-89, M
You have been involved with the space program for a while?

This article has a video with some explanatory labels; seems the upper part, starship, failed to separate from the lower part, booster, at around 4 min.
https://finance.yahoo.com/video/watch-elon-musk-spacex-starship-135000412.html
Here's a two minute video linked on youtube; shortest I could find. It shows more or less normal acceleration until the last few seconds when it disappears into a cloud and then debris starts falling out.

If u don’t succeed at first, try again until u do.

They learned that a flame tunnel that protects your 33 rocket engines from blast debris is probably a good idea unless you put 50's era sci-fi long rocket support legs/fins on the booster. 🙄😏
I was curious that it kinda looked like there was alot of unusual side flame... maybe trying to correct the uneven thrust below?

I wonder if he is insured.....?😷
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
It sounds like the launch pad broke up and damaged the outer engines. A car parked some distance away had a chunk of concrete go through it as seen in one video. I'm sure a rocket nozzel has little chance of surviving that.
SomeMichGuy · M
Good take on this!
I guess you have to light all the boosters...

SomeMichGuy · M
@Tastyfrzz ABC had a view of the rear and said sthg like 7 of the "boosters"--I believe that's what was reported--did not fire, showing several unbalanced, unlighted places around the ring.
Unbalanced boosters = unbalanced thrust = torque (couple)
Higher is likely more dangerous. It's likely the lack of ignition of these boosters.
I am not familiar with this design, but both the terminology and video suggest that solid fuel rockets are being used. Since they (solid fuel rockets) don't have the equivalent ability of, say, a liquid fuel rocket to have an initial low-flow proof of ignition as part of the design, this seems to be the failure of something easily testable within a non-launch context (at much less cost in terms money, time, and negative publicity); this should have been sorted out long before the launch test.

@SomeMichGuy nope. They use liquid fuel. Methane and oxygen.
SomeMichGuy · M
@Tastyfrzz Ok, then that's even MORE perplexing (but it agrees with what the burn looked like).
It's also more concerning that ignition could fail in so many chambers.
Again...easily testable in a NON-launch configuration.

I was waiting for a light show complete with vivid colors, but all we got were a few sparklers 🎇 and an exploding roman candle🕯️
SlaveEt · 36-40, F
Indeed. Hopefully they figure out what went wrong and are able to improve things so the next launches are successful.

I don't think the "fail fast, learn faster" mantra maps well to things that go boom and/or pollute the air/ocean/space
But hey, let's try to shoehorn everything into startup and/or Silicon Valley culture, for the sake of it, so we can say we operate Like A Startup, woohoo!
