Nobody goes from being mentally/psychlogically well, ordered and okay with the world around them to committing suicide in 260 days for the lack of amenities.
There is a huge difference between being at war and whatever you want to call this mess we are in at the moment. When you go to war your entire mind, body and soul undergoes a rather dramatic change and you are prepared to endure rather extreme depravations - the sailors are for all intents and purpose simply not in the mindset to endure what feels likes unnecessary hardships brought on by stupidity.

@Ontheroad they were never at war.
Prison1203 · 61-69, M
They were coddled as children and have been brought up to think they should have everything given to them and never had a good spanking all they did was play video games

@SunshineGirl NO, it just takes one fool to say something and the press loves to jump on it and apply the comment to the whole crew

It would seem to me a breakdown in the chain of command. Time for some new management, aka executive level leaders.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@Steve42 The chain of command has been disrupted and corrupted by politics. The US armed forces now serve the whims of the trump régime rather than the Constitution.
americans will get used to it.

@Steve42 Maybe.
Khenpal1 · M
there you have it , Amidst the escalating controversy and clear strain on the crew, the Pentagon has ordered the USS George Washington to the Middle East to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, allowing the ship to finally return home. If they say media are lying 🥳
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
That is factually wrong for the navy. You are making shit up.
The only thing comparable was a U boat on a 225 day patrol and They surpassed that on the Lincoln.
And comparing the navy to the infantry is dishonest too.
You think the army had it bad because they don't have a flushing toilet?
They also had chow halls with food trucked in on a regular basis and proper rations.

Historically and in the modern era, sailors going overboard intentionally—whether due to extreme psychological distress, poor living conditions, or a phenomenon known as "sea madness"—has been a recorded issue for centuries.

They probably never thought they would be murdering women and children, and afterwards told they did a good thing and to do it again, and again, and again.
Gibbon · 70-79, M
More bullshit from the media. That ship has an 85% re-enlistment rate. Does that sound like a doomsday ship to you?
And for the record, there was only one overboard. There's no evidence he jumped. He was wearing a life jacket. And was rescued within an hour. This is more bullshit without all the facts that the media loves to report.

The food looked disgusting even before the supply chain broke down. The French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle has its own bakery that turns out 2,000 baguettes a day. A military force marches on its stomach.
nudistsueaz · 61-69, F
@SunshineGirl So you think the Lincoln doesn't?
swirlie · 31-35, F
@SunshineGirl
The American aircraft carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln probably has an onboard McDonald's franchise happening.

The report of what you heard or read about the aircraft carrier Lincoln is false a total political scam....

Men of today are not the men of yesterday in America - unfortunately
RedBaron · M
How many have actually done this? One or two is not statistically significant.
@RedBaron It is when you're talking about a pool of less than 6,000 crew onboard. That would be higher than the suicide rate in the US population.
RedBaron · M
@InfoTunaBotTheReturn But without such data, the post is pointless.

@BeachGirl47 whether the “claims are true” or not. Does anyone believe the agency responsible for the sailors committing suicide would admit to it happening?
SnickersDOM · M
Are you really going to pretend sailors didn't attempt or succeed with suicide during WW2 also?
BohoBabe · M
@SnickersDOM Not to this degree, not even close.
SnickersDOM · M
@BohoBabe we don't have a precise figure in either the current or the past case, so what is the basis of your statement?
BohoBabe · M
@SnickersDOM We don't have a precise figure, but we do know that navy suicides were at an all time low during WWII, whereas now they're quickly increasing.
It's also important to remember that WWII was a defensive war. In this war, America is the aggressor. So whether by suicide or killed in Iran, these soldiers are dying for nothing.

Depends. Is there gaming access?? If not, then that's probably already enough to do it.
val70 · 56-60
I'm sure that the Charge of the Light Brig'de can be seen through a prism too. I mean that it will all depend on your point of view in the first place. I'm much more of a "lets not get into this kind of situation in the first place" person... yes, even for the military.
GoFish · 41-45, F
so why are you spreading fake false news now that you know its not true eh?
Justanothername · 56-60, M
Ironically this is what Republicans voted for when they voted for Trump.
How ever Trumps utter disdain for humanity and anyone other than himself has led to a totally lack of planning and support systems that would normally enable troop supply and food resupply on an extended deployment.

There's no real answer. People respond to stress in different ways. And one person may not respond the same way every time. Everyone is different.
Statistically if you take any group of 5000 people and place them in a stressful situation for a long period of time I suspect you might get a few suicide attempts.

In World War II, the mission was clear, that mission was communicated and embraced by most in and out of the military, and the Commander-in-Chief, although on the older side and showing signs of sickness was vibrant, coherent, and focused on achieving the mission.
On the USS Abraham Lincoln, the mission is unknown, there is limited communication, if any at all, and the Commander-in-Chief is more interested in seeing his name on monuments to himself than anything else. Oh... and he sleeps through meetings... regularly and religiously.

No R&R on a ship. Worsening conditions. No clear mission. Too much time away from family.

According to fake news BS? You assumed everything the MSM reports is true?
There are over 5000 sailors on that ship and …
That ship has the highest rate of re-enlistment in the navy.
Got proof ?

Deployed beyond acceptable parameters. Out at sea syndrome it was called or overextended deployment.
Roundandroundwego · 61-69
Iran says there was a mutiny with sailors killed, by the dozens. Y'all choose what to listen to and therefore you BELIEVE in their suicide. You believe. All Americans believe they were suicides. You believe. You only believe that!
jehova · 36-40, M
@Roundandroundwego mutiny sounds far more likely. It seems highly unlikely that American crew members sudden turned Japanese and committed suicide to avoid dishonor.
AmericanAvenger · M
There are not enough American deaths for the media to scare the people with so this story is being trumped up to generate sympathy and anger.
BlueVeins · 26-30
People of the developed world are incredibly soft and weak-spirited. The fact that this war is pointless only makes it harder.
swirlie · 31-35, F
What we know for sure about them is nothing. Anything you hear is speculative at best.
