Do you think the Russians will invade Ukraine, the Baltic States and Poland?

OldBrit · 61-69, M
Ukraine looks possible. I doubt the others esp as they are already fully signed up members of NATO and therefore under the NATO mutual defence agreement would instantly mean all NATO members were duty bound to assist them militarily.

However Ukraine is not a member (yet). There are the Russian separatists fighting in Eastern Ukraine. If Russia and it's allies (Belorussia particularly) could be seen to coming to the aid of those through some atrocity etc. then I think they may well do or if the corridor to Crimea is threatened they might.

Frightening thoughts though - I had hoped all this was past us in the 90s after the wall came down and the curtain lifted.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
Of course. An "incident" will happen and some Russians living in Ukraine will "Request help" and be "assisted". Thats how these things are done.😷

@MarmeeMarch North Korea is hardly a part of this current problem. The people are starving and "Fat Boy" himself isnt so fat any more. He is a useful puppet as long as he keeps the lid on the place and keeps up the rare earth deliveries. But with Chinas own financial issues right now, they wont have the patient to put up with a petulent child in their own family.😷

@MarmeeMarch Skipping over the last part, you have a point. NK military is meant to keep their own people scared. Join the army and get more to eat. That keeps them loyal for now. The thing is that the Russian Military is operating in a similar fashion. But on a far more sophisticated level. Its not about getting enough to eat. But there are some lifestyle advantages, and Putin relies on looking strong and in control to keep from being deposed as well. So the external posturing is largely for internal consumption. This is what gives Biden and Nato such a problem with Ukraine. Maybe he is planning to invade. Maybe he is daring NATO or the US to make a move he can use as an excuse. Or maybe he just wants to look threatening so he can have everyone calling on him to play nice and look strong at home. I certainly dont know which. And I dont think anyone does but him.😷

We've amassed Sarah Palin and her brood at the other end of Russia. Ready to invade if necessary.
Turtlepower · 36-40, M
@SW-User Ready to pounce from her porch at anytime.
@Turtlepower If I thought that bunch had a chance of finding their way thousands of miles across Asia to get to Russia proper, I'd feel better.

But I doubt they're even capable of even reading a map.
Turtlepower · 36-40, M
@MistyCee The joke is that Sarah Palin once said she could see Russia from her porch in Alaska. She doesn't have to go thousands of miles across Asia, but she rightfully got torn apart for a silly statement.
I don’t wanna be rude.. but for those who think Putin’s gunna do this or that.. are you still convinced there is WMDS in Iraq?
The media is doing its job.. making you think we’re on the side of righteousness to justify another regime chance..
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Beware the Unknown Unknowns.....dangerous fuckers.
gol979 · 41-45, M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout "Russia aggressively moving the army within the confines of their borders. Russia looking aggressively at the 100s of NATO airbases surrounding their border" they have been banging this anti Russian war drum for a while. I mean haven't they learnt anything since russiagate was exposed as utter bs? More pertinent would be the ones banging the war drums on both sides work hand in hand whilst innocents on both sides, who have wayyyy more in common than the parasite drum beaters going and kill each other. Surely we aren't going to fall for it again??
@gol979 are you there.. is this on the ground reporting?

All I’m saying is.. I wouldn’t trust a word from the festering gobs of the lying media,
it’s always Putin the aggressor huh? Never Putin protecting his interests,
While sneaky bastards manipulate the situation.. because that never happens.
Excuse me while I go watch Assad gas his own ppl..
Oy vey.

Australians advised not to travel to Ukraine and for existing residents to leave asap.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@KiwiBird Its not looking promising..😷
Mandyfgrstbhj · 70-79, F
As Biden is the weakest and most incompetent president ever within my lifetime Russia has a great opportunity. The American press must now be ruing the day they covered up what a fool this man is.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Mandyfgrstbhj Biden has nothing to do with any of this, and Trump would equally be doing nothing - because there isn’t anything to do.
Mandyfgrstbhj · 70-79, F
Notice that Putin was scared of Trump’s unpredictability. Now he has what he wants - a wet rag in the White House, @QuixoticSoul
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Mandyfgrstbhj He was not, Russians were just busy winning Syria for Assad during his tenure.

Trump was even less likely to take a muscular posture in Ukraine than Biden - and no US potus would actually do anything. Russians did what they needed to in ‘14-‘15, and then had a wait and see pause for a few years - and now it’s time to shit or get off the pot.

Ukraine imminent...completely and blatantly ignoring the Budapest Memorandum.

Already happened with the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@KiwiBird Budapest memorandum was a non-binding unratified napkin promise, it never meant anything - a face saving gesture for Ukrainians more than anything because nobody was going to let them keep Soviet nukes.
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@QuixoticSoul So we then do not give credence to anything the US signs. Sounds about right.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@KiwiBird Probably shouldn’t - as Iran recently learned these things change from year to year. At least a real treaty goes through Congress and becomes law.

US is not violating the Budapest memo though.

Sabre rattling to justify huge military budgets. Wars are manufactured to sell weapons. A very wise man said, "If you take the profit out of war there wouldn't be any wars."
smiler2012 · 56-60
{@barborak] do you honestly think putin is that crazy. think about any intervention into poland would definately cause a war in europe as poland is a nato country
Nimbus · M
@smiler2012 Did you know Putin supports Liverpoo?

Country, its alliance NATO has already been tested in Afghanistan, the way they got out.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@TheOrionbeltseeker what is your point? The US should never have gone into Afghanistan when it did, that was the mistake made by a POTUS who either by himself, or pressure from an advisor, decided er could do something no other invader has ever been able to do in that country. Afghanistan has always been the graveyard of empires. We spent fortunes of our dollars, and lost thousands of lives to gain very little advantage.

And let's not forget the Soviet Army invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 that lasted until 1989 which resulted in the withdrawal of Soviet forces and an Afghan mujaheddin victory.

The Baltic states and Poland are all directly in NATO. I don't think Russia would invade them unless they invade Ukraine and NATO responds with direct military conflict. Then all bets are off and no one really wins.
trackboy · 22-25, M
It will be interesting if Ukraine kept some of the soviet nukes as the soviet union lost track of a lot of its nukes when it went under. could see Ukraine launching a nuke into Moscow if invaded. 😺
Wait... You're moving way too fast for me on this one.

Have they already got troops in the other two borders yet, or is this a longer term thing after Ukraine?
ButterRobot · 51-55, M
its hard to see another reason for their massing of troops on the border.
@ButterRobot The problem is people seem to think this would be just an invasion...completely ignoring the fact it would be a be a bloody war with potentially millions of deaths and it possibly spilling over into neighboring countries.
Last thing Europe needs.
And one of my friends here lives in the middle of Kyiv.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@TheSirfurryanimalWales Nah. If Russians do start an operation, expect a short blitz, followed by them leaving. The object will be the destruction of Ukrainian military assets, a Georgia-style neutering, basically. Potential for spillover is very low - the hottest heads in the region want to keep their Article 5 protections.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
Ukraine, quite possibly, Baltics etc no.
Beautyisamonstrosity · 31-35, M
Eastern Europe maybe except for poland
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
no. Why bother. Not worth the effort.
Nimbus · M
Nope.

Mere sabre rattling.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
i hope not!
DDonde · 31-35, M
Maybe? We'll see I guess
empanadas · 31-35, M
I highly doubt Poland but the Ukraine, maybe
