It's not easy being a dwarf planet

This is Haumea, one of five dwarf planets identified in our solar system. She is too small to have a proper global atmosphere, so gravity has pulled her into an egg shape. She spins so fast that her day lasts just 3.9 hours. And to cap it all, something collided with her and now she has a big red bruise on one side and a ring of ice and rock she just can't seem to shake off.

I would LOVE to do gymnastics on a planet with less gravity so this dwarf planet should do just fine! 😌😌😌
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@MommyLucy This planet is so small that she cannot maintain atmospheric pressure like the earth and she has been pulled in strange directions by gravity. Even you would find it difficult to hang on your bar!

@SunshineGirl I'm not the best at science but wouldn't being pulled in all directions be kind of fun almost like a ride in a theme park? 🤭🤭🤭 I like that gymnastics and roller coasters are scary and fun at the same time so this dwarf planet may feel like a constant roller coaster? 😱🙃🥳 If this dwarf planet is too dangerous we just need a witch to cast a spell to make the gravity stable! 😌😌😌 Sorry I am not good at understanding science! 😭😭😭

I feel sorry for Pluto, which was relegated from full planet status in my youth.

They are the Burnley FC of large orbital rocks.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@SunshineGirl I agree!

Distance, size and debris in orbit be damned!
@Burnley123 @SunshineGirl I'm in the Pluto Is Still A Planet club too

@SunshineGirl When I was in school in the 90's Pluto was still a planet back then too! 🤗🤗🤗 Not anymore though! 😘😘😘

Needs a Taylor Swift moment to 'shake it off'.

I love love love learning about astronomy. I’ve never understood anyone who doesn’t look up and just be astonished.
Don’t know much about this little world, is it beyond Pluto in the Keiper belt?
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Oneofthestormboys I am not sure. Only learned about it at the weekend from a series I am watching.

@SunshineGirl I love the Cox stuff. Universe was fantastic.

Poor baby. :'(

A day on Haumea is about four Earth hours.
It takes 285 Earth years for Haumea to orbit the Sun.
Haumea's radius is about 385 miles or 620 kilometers.
Haumea has two known moons: Namaka is the inner moon, and Hi'iaka.

But how does Pluto feel these days with the possibility of being declared a double planet in conjunction with its moon Charon?
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@ChipmunkErnie Still in a huff about being demoted to a dwarf planet . .
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@SunshineGirl Somewhere I have a book about that -- tried to find it to lend to someone and can't figure out where I put it -- that explains that the whole "demotion" was based less on scientific definition of planets and more on how research funds were allocated.
This picture looks beautiful. I wish we had real pics up close of all celestial bodies.

@froggtongue Some day we will. These artists impressions are based on the best evidence we have.

Be a nice location for a cute little bed and breakfast.

How do they know that there are dwarves on this dwarf planet?
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Glossy Only dwarves would be hardy enough to withstand this environment.
FreddieUK · 70-79, MNew
@Glossy I suspect Snow White let the cat out of the bag
