Do you go to the movies? And when did they get so expensive lol

I like going to the Alamo Theater, so chatty people can get kicked out. It brings me joy.

I only watch British/independent films in the cinema (theater). Mainstream is just too loud and the audience often too restless. Also, independent cinemas are often cheaper.
TexChik · F
From what I hear, every thing in Canada is expensive at the moment.

I used to go, I preferred going alone on a day off in the morning so I could be the only one or one of the few in the theater, so I could get immersed into the movie.

Then COVID happened all the inane insane rules , so I stopped going. I have not been since.

More comfortable @ home

I enjoy the movie theater experience but only go a few times a year
Zaphod42 · 51-55, M
I miss the days when $5 got you a movie ticket, small drink and medium popcorn 😕
@Zaphod42 Me, too. 🥺

Rarely
I don’t mind movie ticket prices
It’s the concessions that are ridiculous
Confined · 56-60, M
Movie theaters only get 10% of the ticket money on first run movies. They have to sell candy to make money. The movie companies set the ticket prices. After the mad rush on the movie then the theater gets 15 to 20% of the ticket money. All the rest going to the movie company of course to pay for the movie and the actors. Many years ago I worked for 2 different independent movie theaters. Even got to to to the unfinished Space balls screening in NYC, Saw a fish called wanda before it came out.
Last movie I saw was Beetle juice. Before that...hmmmmm I think I saw Vice with my mom.

I went back in August. I didn’t think it was too bad as far as expenses go. Then, I also didn’t buy any concessions.

rarely is a theater full. ive seen many movies and i was only person

I love going to the cinema but I'm such a tight arse. There's absolutely no way I'm paying that much money for snacks. I'm sneaking my own food and drink in.
bikelover · 56-60, M
Depends on the movie, some are way better on the big screen
hunkalove · 70-79, M
The last time I was in a movie theatre was 2001, the first Lord of the Rings movie. Too expensive, too loud, and not very good. Just not worth it.
GoFish ·
i don't i watch at home
Teirdalin · 31-35
Not in years.
available4 · 70-79, M
I get them off the internet free, then watch when I want to
not in years. I vaguely wonder what they charge for ticket now, but it's a pretty hard sell for me. I imagine a sales guy giving me a pitch: sure it's less convenient and more expensive, but you also don't get to control or pause the playing and you'll likely be around a bunch of loud and rude people.

that said, I do like the idea of a social aspect to watching a good and relevant show - anticipating it, talking with a friend group after, et al. but I'm not going to get that anyway.
exexec · 70-79, C
I haven't been in years. My wife goes occasionally with friends.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
Only if its something we really want to see.
Pretzel · 70-79, M
not for years

probably haven't been in one for 10 or 15 years

haven't heard of one worth the money to put up with the crowds and high prices
HumanEarth · F
Last movie movies I saw at a theater and it was a drive-in movie theater. Despicable Me/Rango and Salt /The Wolfman because drive-ins always do double feature. You pay for one movie and watch two

That's right before they torn down the drive-in

I tried to go indoor theater recently. They wouldn't take cash and said they use assigned seating now. Yeah! No! I walked away - no sale. I like cash and that assigned seating is for grammar school kids. I like to sit where i please and move around if someone is being loud or something.

Plus what was it like 30 bucks for one movie. Not worth it, when people can just download anything for free and watch it offline.

What would you do?
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@HumanEarth $30 for one movie! That's insane. I'd have followed you out.
HumanEarth · F
Yeah! For real It better come with a darn good meal for that price
