It makes sense to make it legal to obtain for free if it's not available for sale, provided the only reason for it not to be available for sale is financial.

@NerdyPotato I actually asked my facebook friend who was one of the more beloved characters in POTC, and he agrees with me/us.

If we can't find it elsewhere, piracy is acceptable.

It's actually not piracy if the film isn't commercially available in your country. I know someone who won a court case over this.
If a movie isn't commercially available for you then buying it from a collector site or another country isn't taking money out of anyone's pockets.
For example, Disney's Song of the South isn’t commercially available in America because Disney chooses not to distribute it here. Last time it was released there was negative publicity over the racist aspects of the film and Disney hates negative publicity. However they continue to sell it in other countries. You'll find dozens of people selling new Song of the South DVDs on ebay, and it's legal for an American to purchase because Disney isn't losing my sale.

@robingoodfellow I wish someone would win a case like this about a video game. Nintendo is relentless about suing people for sharing video games they no longer sell.

Gabe Newell actually has a pretty famous quote about piracy:

I personally use it for movies/tv because it's just so much more convenient and streaming is just such a mess right now

Living out in a rural town it would be like 6 to 12 months after you saw the trailer for the movies before it comes out on DVD. Quite often other people would download them illegally and share them with work mates or friends. And if it was something I would want to watch again I'd buy the DVD.
And I never feel guilty when the movie is shit.

Piracy doesn't decrease the profits of someone who produces content. If anything, it increases it, by increasing the amount of viewers and also that of paying viewers (from, essentially, network effect)
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
Usually those older movies are not a most have on a network. But that movie is on like 6 free networks
TheRealBarbossa · 36-40, T
@smileylovesgaming Norway generally loves thrillers and big names, and yet I didn't get a chance to watch the thriller The Rule Of Jenny Pen from 2024 until 2 days ago.

It wasn't shown in theater, it's not for sale online anywhere (the whole of Norway only has 3 shops that sell DVDs in general), nd it's not on any streaming services.

I finally found it on my google tv, so I bought it. I wanted to watch it yet again tonight, but decided two nights in a row should be enough for now. I will certainly watch it again within the next week tho. Not only because Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow star in it, or even because they're both naked in shower scenes (separately, not together), but because the movie itself is amazing.

@TheRealBarbossa do u have a Roku or a smart tv
TheRealBarbossa · 36-40, T
@smileylovesgaming I have a google tv.

I live in Norway, so the selections may differ from yours tho. Please keep that in mind.
JPWhoo · 36-40, M
Pirated movies are great, especially the ones rated Rrrrrrrrrr!
ItsMeMorgue · 46-50, F
If the movie is unavailable any other way, I figure the company isn't making any money on it, anyway, so it's NBD.
TheRealBarbossa · 36-40, T
@ItsMeMorgue exactly.

I'm facebook friends with one of the Pirates of the Caribbean actors, and asked him the same question as I was making this post.

He says it's fine. (Meaning he is pro-piracy within reason, which tickles my funny bone as he is most known for his pirate character 😅 )

Also, not all movies are made in murice
Actors and actresses are now getting $20million+ , they charge $50 to see 95 minutes at IMAX theaters, large popcorn $15, they can take a few hits.

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I'm not a sexual pervert, nor are most people, and altho I love escaping reality by watching movies, I also understand everyone involved in movie production does it as a job, regardless of how much they enjoy it. It's their source of income.

They may seem overpaid, but think about it.
They spend months away from their family and friends, spend 16-20h a day pretending to be someone else on camera (also suggesting they need to understand how humans work, even those significantly different than them), if they get sick or have a bad day they still need to perform well, they can't accept a 2nd job or higher paying job because of the contracts they've signed.

Some even have to spend several hours a day sitting in a chair for makeup/costumes being put on.

That and much more is during filming alone.

After filming they need to participate in publicity stunts, interviews that will be analyzed beyond what's realistic/fair, supporting the project wether or not they actually support it irl. Pretending to like all of their co-stars, directors, producers etc.

And if they make even the slightest mistake during all that it could not only ruin their reputation, but their whole careers for the rest of their lives.

And that's just the professional aspects of their job. The pressure to be a decent human being between jobs is just as strong.

So yes, I strongly feel they deserve to be paid, and I see why piracy is bad in general.
