I, too. am in Texas. in my youth the area in which I lived gained international attention with "Dallas", sparking exactly the same kind of misnomers about the people if this state and this region that perpetuate to this day! Do people like those portrayed in 'Landman" or 'Dallas" actually exist in the Lone Star State? Absolutely! Are they as overwhelmingly represented in our reality as such shows would have you believe? Absolutely not!
Personally I spent years living down the perception of Texas, especially since I am devoid of a Southern or Texas drawl, I don't wear denim orca cowboy hat, and I only ever owned cowboy boots once (in childhood). I don't own horses, have not ridden one in over a quarter of a century, and I have no stake in big oil.
Are aspects of Texas accurately portrayed? I imagine like all regions that become popularized in media the answer is... at times. But it is easier and more attractive to sensationalize regions with exaggerated incarnations than to actually paint an accurate picture of the area and its population.

I'm not sure how many movies or series which have been filmed here (and I have by no means seen them all) have actually explicitly referenced / depicted my city
sometimes it's used as a stand-in for places like New York, Illinois, Ohio, Africa or even the Outer Banks in the state to our north (no, casual, frequent boat use by teens is not the norm here, but we have hanged many pirates in the colonial era)
even with The Notebook I think this area is really secondary to the story, and I wasn't alive during the era depicted so it may be a bit romanticized
I don't recall if some mini-series touching upon the uglier parts of our local 19th century history explicitly named my city, but those might be accurate
I don't think we have any actual televangelists here, so the Righteous Gemstones may not be super-accurate, but background stuff in many scenes does seem more or less like normal contemporary life here
some obnoxious reality show about socialites like Southern Charm definitely does not represent the normal experience here

There was a series on Netflix called iZombie and it took place in Seattle. They captured the area and its people perfectly.
akindheart · 70-79, F
several movies have been filmed in my town in Ohio. yes they are accurate. my town has since witnessed a revival and i am so proud of it
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@akindheart that is so wonderful
akindheart · 70-79, F
@AngelUnforgiven i agree. it was a miraculous recovery. many people from all over the county are visiting.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
As far as I know, there have only been pickup shots here and there, certainly nothing based on my town. Some Hunger Games II exterior shots were done here, that's surely not my town.
People have various forms of a Noo Yawk accent.

There was a holiday hallmark film that was partially filmed in my hometown, mainly because of it's resemblance to a small Midwestern town.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@Sidewinder wow thats so cool
Bklynbadboy12 · 36-40, M
I was born and raised in New York city there are a ton of movies and tv shows filmed here and almost none are accurate not evethe stuff you see on the news
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@Bklynbadboy12 wooow New York that's crazy. Y'all have had gangster movies, natural disaster movies, terrorist attacks, break dance movies, aliens, even vampires in the Bronx i think Jason Vorhees even paid y'all a visit in Jason Takes Manhattan
Bklynbadboy12 · 36-40, M
@AngelUnforgiven They always portray New York as bring hard with gangs and crime and its really not like that at all
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
Black and White (2002) Is about a murder that took place in the town in 1968. It happened along the beach near some cliffs. Although the cliffs they used in the movie are actually 800km away from the actual site.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@Thevy29 i'm going to look this up thanks i love true crime movies
Kiesel · 56-60, M
Not at all
95% of the population here in my part of Texas, doesn’t have horses, a ranch, cattle, wears a cowboy hat, nor has the over exaggerated accent draw

No idea -- the only one I know of I haven't seen.
tenente · 36-40, M
Are movies that are filmed in/about your town accurate?
'Anora' and 'Saturday Night' are pretty close. 'Verity' feels real too.
'Someone Great' felt like if Instagram was asked to describe NYC lol stylized, glossy and fictitious
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@tenente lol 😂😂😂😂
SwampFlower · 31-35, F
Not really at all lol
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F

Every movie that's "set" in Austin, seems to be pretty accurate. Every movie that's "set" in Seattle, seems to be accurate.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@Northwest nice
pdockal · 56-60, M

My Own Private Idaho was pretty accurate for its theme in Portland.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F

@AngelUnforgiven The director wanted me to be an extra street kid when he saw me eating my lunch when they were filming the elk statue scene at the beginning, long hair, scruffy cheap thrift store trench coat, scruff on my face. I declined hecause I already had a job in a DownTown office mail room. I have the dvd, an awesome movie.
