Studies show liberals are more mentally ill than conservatives

Multiple studies in psychology and epidemiology suggest that self-identified liberals report higher rates of depression, anxiety, and lower life satisfaction than conservatives. For instance, a Columbia University study examining more than 86,000 U.S. high-school seniors over 13 years found that depression rates have been increasing for all adolescents, but the increase is sharpest among liberal-identifying students, particularly liberal girls (magazine.columbia.edu, 2024). Likewise, research in Social Psychological and Personality Science demonstrates that conservatives report a higher sense of meaning and purpose in life than liberals—even after controlling for religious belief (dornsife.usc.edu, 2019).

A large comparative study across 92 countries and 200,000 respondents showed that conservatives generally rate their life satisfaction more positively than liberals, particularly when living in societies with more conservative cultural norms (phys.org, 2016). In “Conservatives Are Happier than Liberals: The Mediating Role of Perceived Goal Progress and Flow Experience,” a U.S. sample study revealed that conservatives tend to feel greater subjective well-being, in part because they perceive more goal progress and experience flow, especially under stressful or threatening conditions (link.springer.com, 2020).

Real life examples also illustrate the pattern. Many liberal activists and thinkers are deeply attuned to generate chronic stress, moral distress, and rumination. By contrast, conservative individuals often draw strength from more stable institutions—religion, family, traditions—and tend to find meaning in continuity, order, and communal belonging.

Of course, these findings do not imply that all or most liberals suffer mental illness, nor that conservatives are immune; there are many countervailing factors. But the data supports the claim that, on average, liberals have more mental health challenges and lower subjective well-being compared to conservatives.

Perhaps the conservative believes that they are perfectly fine and it's the rest of the world that is wrong, whereas the more liberal understand their limitations and want help to improve. That's alongside the empathy points already mentioned.

@Thrust Such prescience is a gift: treasure it.

Yes, I saw that study. It came out some time ago.

I feel that there is another contributing factor among liberals, and that is chronic drug use. The extremely high levels of THC in todays marijuana can cause major problems in brain development among young people. And that's if they LIMIT themselves to marijuana use...which most do not.

If brains are not developing properly, mental illness is just a short step away.
Mudkip · 31-35, M
@4meAndyou I see this as well. They are usually drug users, uneducated and have no assets. Whether it be property, vehicles, or anything of value, they have none of it. But they are excellent at coming up with excuses for their misfortunes.
4meAndyou · F
@Mudkip I might not go that far in lumping people all together and saying this and that is true about ALL of them...but I do see a great deal of ignorance among some of them...which could also be attributed to chronic drug use.
Mudkip · 31-35, M
@4meAndyou this is just from my personal experience, of course it's not true about all of them. But it appears to be the norm within the most unhinged I've seen, especially when I was attending university.

One study with many limitations. The study does suggest that those defined as conservatives by the researchers may have better feelings that there world is good and doesn't need much improvement. That may make someone happier, but also may limit creativity and the desire to do better. Here is the discussion's end, the perceived limitations, etc.

However, our study contains some limitations, and a major one refers to its correlational nature. Therefore, complementary studies should employ more rigorous causal designs such as experiments. For example, studies could experimentally test the effects of political ideologies (with their characteristic values) and situational threat (e.g., loss vs. no-loss conditions) on perceived goal progress, flow, self-control, and positive emotions. A second major limitation refers to the fact that we used a single item to measure political ideology. However, although the use of a limited number of items could have facilitated survey completion and thus could have ensured reliability of data, ideology constitutes a multifaceted and complex phenomenon that may require the use of several items to be properly captured (Okulicz-Kozaryn et al. 2014). However, the literature shows a lack of psychometric studies on the political ideology construct (Okulicz-Kozaryn et al. 2014). A third limitation refers to the fact that the study used a sample of participants coming from a Western country only (the United States). Because the notions of “conservatism” and “liberalism” can be differently interpreted according to the countries and cultures, the generalizability of our results to other Western countries should be done with cautious. Hence, this study should be replicated with other Western (and even non-Western) samples of participants. Lastly, this study was performed online, which may have generated a self-selection bias in the sampling, as the participants who voluntarily decided to take part in the survey would not represent the entire target population. However, the goal of our study was more about the investigation of general relationships between variables than about examining how a given group or community can function. However, the data collection through the online platform may have led to reduce the accuracy of participants’ responses, even if we attempted to limit this bias by encouraging participants’ task commitment through a financial remuneration. Moreover, as for any investigations using self-report measures, desirability social could have biased participants’ responses. Nonetheless, the methodology of this study attempted to prevent such a bias by informing the participants that their data would remain anonymous and confidential.

From an applied standpoint, our study has some implications. This study suggests that endorsing the view that the world comprises social and economic injustices (palliative function of system-justification), combined with the idea that inequalities are not fatalities and thus can be overcome through commitment to goal attainment process (perception of control), could help people maintain or even increase engagement in their goals despite the existence of obstacles. If this way of thinking would be more salient in conservatives than in liberals, adopting such a reasoning would not be enough to make conservative a liberal individual, since political ideology is inherently complex and thus cannot be reduced to separated cognitive variables.

Why are the causes of these phenomena not talked about here? You don't think it's important...

Like Columbia university, also reported:

American adults who identify as politically liberal have long reported lower levels of happiness and psychological well-being than conservatives, a trend that mental-health experts suspect is at least partly explained by liberals’ tendency to spend more time worrying about stress-inducing topics like racial injustice, income inequality, gun violence, and climate change.

Now a team of Columbia epidemiologists has found evidence that the same pattern holds for American teenagers. The researchers analyzed surveys collected from more than eighty-six thousand twelfth graders over a thirteen-year period and discovered that while rates of depression have been rising among students of all political persuasions and demographics, they have been increasing most sharply among progressive students — and especially among liberal girls from low-income families.

Makes you wonder what needs to fall under "mentally ill" actually? Is it worrying about things that go wrong in society? Or is it apathy that conserves those ills, that keep making victims and opresses groups in society and stresses those people that care about these things?

If the dominant ideology in society is rather conservative, adherents of a conservative ideology tend to be happier than liberals. With decreasing social conservatism, the conservatives tended to forfeit their "satisfaction advantage." In the studies, the scientists used the data of 200,000 survey respondents from the USA and 92 countries around the world. The results of the studies will be published in the Journal of Research in Personality (Volume 63, August 2016, Pages 29-35).

[...] The World Values Survey is compiled by an international network of political and social scientists. For the United States, the researchers concluded that the correlation between a person's individual political attitude and happiness is stronger in those years in which this political attitude is broadly accepted and widespread - conservative Americans were at their happiest when the overall political climate was rather conservative. In those years in which a more liberal climate prevailed, they were not generally happier than liberals. This explains the fluctuations that can be observed for the United States over the past 40 years. "In 2004, when the climate was decidedly conservative, there was a particularly strong correlation. In that year, life satisfaction was very high among conservatives," says Stavrova. Similar phenomena can be observed around the world. Generally, conservatives are happier than non-conservatives. However, "that is mostly the case in conservative countries. In liberal countries, they do not have any advantage." In Germany, there is hardly any correlation between political ideology and life satisfaction.

It is mostly conservatives who are influenced by their environment. No such correlation was discernible in for people with a liberal attitude. In this context, the researchers noted that all the characteristics facilitating life satisfaction, for example religiosity or personality, help an individual attain popularity and respect in society." In this regard, conservatives feel better. They have better relationships with others, feel understood and validated in their views."

Scientists call this the "person-culture fit" -- the individual "fits" into his or her environment. "We believe this to be at the heart of our results. It is nothing intrinsic to the conservative ideology," Stavrova argues. "For conservatives, social belonging seems to matter a great deal. Liberals are more autonomous."

🙄 That might be the reason why a segment of Americans lost their mind when a black guy suddenly got into the white house... some of these people never recovered.

Considering you didn't provide any source... I can't know for sure. But I think these are the same people that were involved in the studies you cite. But I guess your reading stopped after you were able to paste the label "mentally ill" on "liberals"... because your post doesn't really care about the reasons or nuances behind those studies you cite.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@Kwek00 That was not too long to read and I found it very helpful to see the whole context. It makes complete sense.
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@FreddieUK Well, there might be more reasons... these are just the first things you pop into when you actually use the main posts text to do a search to find the original studies. Because sourcing studies is apperently really hard.
Translation: ignorance is bliss.

Liberals tend to be more concerned about improving society; thus they are less happy living alongside poverty, injustice, and inequality. Conservatives are better at overlooking these problems and/or blaming the victim.
PatKirby · M
Finally a bright spot in an otherwise dull day! Don't you just love a good story with a happy ending? 👍
conservatives generally rate their life satisfaction more positively than liberals, particularly when living in societies with more conservative cultural norms (phys.org, 2016)

So you actually find it surprising that

"People who believe X are more fulfilled when living amongst those who also believe X."

?

Why does that surprise you?

And what is the ACTUAL reference for this and the other supposed research? This is sloppy footnoting, at best...

@Thrust yes, but also leave out half my point.

@Thrust I'm rubber, you're glue,.....
Makes sense to me. The results go hand in hand with the studies that show conservatives by an large have lower emotional intelligence and lower cognitive ability in general.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
That sounds like an extraordinarily biased study to me. It's a known fact that many conservatives consider mental illness to be a sign of weakness, and won't admit to it.
WoWgirll · 36-40, F
@LordShadowfire just the men
That makes sense. There's a reason for the saying "ignorance is bliss".

Studies based on voluntary polls will also say that queer people are most likely to be liberal

Then those studies crash against reality when Republicans meet and Grindr crashes from the overload
FoxyQueen · 51-55, F
That may be because conservatives are narcissistic and/or sociopathic and don't have emotions that aren't self gratifying? 🤷‍♀

@Thrust i won't dignify that comment with any attempt to explain. Who lost a suit and was found guilty of committing sexual abuse, at which time the judge said that what he did could better be termed rape? Was that a liberal? Who was Epstein and what is the significance, are you seriously saying you have no idea, where have you been?

Conservatives also tend to have lower IQs and education and also report to read less according to several studies

So we might not want to play this game. Or go ahead I don't care. Liberals are only marginally less insufferable than consevatives.
Torsten · 36-40, M
A study actually needed to be done to show that? Haha its just common sense.. just look at liberals and its instantly certain they are not all there mentally
WoWgirll · 36-40, F
@Torsten they cry a lot. Apparently it's fine for grown men to break down in tears in the street for not winning something.
