Why do so many people dislike math?

MyaJhonston · 22-25, F
cause the teachers they had sucked at it.
SinlessOnslaught · 26-30, M
I'm pretty sure that doing math uses nearly every part of the brain at once. People don't like the amount of effort and energy it takes.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Because 1000! People don't want to learn it.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@MasterLee 4.02•10²⁵⁶⁷? 😶

Uhhh i need a calculator

Bad teachers
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
Most people don't realize how important it is to their lives. Once you "break the code," and become directed into the aspects that affect your life, you understand its importance and take it more seriously.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@dancingtongue wasn't it Churchill who said those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it.
@samueltyler2 I’m a musician and my father, who has an MS in advanced math, never understood why math never came easier to me. I don’t know either. But it wasnt because I wasn’t interested in it.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@samueltyler2 No, it was philosopher Jorge Santayana.
iamelijah · 26-30, M
Because its hard.I can handle numbers but when they put alphabets into it. My head just can't handle it.
Find x, find y, find abc...etc..
DrSunnyTheSkeptic · 26-30, M
Because it's easy to lose grasp of and it looks like Mandarin when you dont understand it. Frankly I find dental medicine easier than it.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I don't know about the others but I'm pretty sure I'm sort of handicapped in this area.
Rickg · 31-35, M
Because it’s a jerk
MasterLee · 56-60, M
@Rickg could be a snap

@Rickg crackle?

I think it is because traditionally how math is taught only really works for a small percentage of learners. Fortunately I'm one of them, but the dry theory can be mind numbing whereas applications of it in the real world can be captivating.

Fractions are a perfect example. Teaching them with probability in mind makes them a game.
Cause it’s sucks n blows at the same time..
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
I loved math
helenS · 36-40, F
@smileylovesgaming Why the past tense please?
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
@helenS I use math everyday

It's a cultural phenomenon. Educated people are proud to be "people people", not "numbers people".
You don't recognize a Picasso? You're a barbarian.
You don't know what a differential equation is? You will always be in good company. 😐
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
Most math is abstract, so uninteresting to most people. Applied math, as in calculating cost f purchases, tips, etc., is applied and more interesting.
helenS · 36-40, F
@samueltyler2 Those people only follow rules, so - they never catch the spirit of maths.
thepreposterouspanda · 36-40, M
I moved around a lot growing up and each new teacher I had wouldn't accept the methods I had been taught by the previous teacher. By 9th grade, I just didn't care anymore.
FreestyleArt · 31-35, M
For some cerears doesn't need math at all.

But you have to do it anyways.
HannahSky · F
They don't understand logic.
Bados · 100+, M
@HannahSky 🤔
LostOrchid · F
Time consuming and pointless 🥱
Northwest · M
Dislike? I will not go into "some teachers are bad", which may be true, but generally speaking, not just for math. Imagine you were handed a Greek novel, and you don't understand Greek. It would be a waste of time to stare at it.
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
Math is hard.
I love math. Stimulates the mind.
Doing algebraic equations is fun.
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
I have Dyscalculia as do my kids - reason enough
Oh it makes mah head hurt… LOL
cause it makes them feel stupid
Sharky86 · 36-40, M
Cause it sucks XD
Possibly they find it difficult. I always did.

@CopperCicada But when you see schools and educational groups try to move away from the "by rote" traditional teaching methods to more experiential, exploratory methods involving the students and making the lessons more relevant to life, you get the parental backlash against "liberals" and demands to return to "basic reading and arithmetic".

@CopperCicada Exactly the problem. As a freshman in high school we had a required "Orientation" class. More like a home room than anything; no specific curriculum, but an effort to help the transition from grade school to high school. We had an unorthodox first year teacher as bored as we students were. He started engaging it on everyday life things, like examining advertising/marketing claims. I remember Gleem had just come out as a toothpaste brand, and their big claim was it came with this new, great ingredient GL-70. So we spent an entire hour going around the room, kids trying to explain what they thought GL-70 was. At the end, he asks "If GL-70 actually had some breakthrough advance in dental hygiene, dontcha think they would be telling you what it is? It's just a marketing gimmick." Didn't call it critical thinking back then, but that is what he was teaching. He wasn't re-hired.
