Should all drugs be legalized?

Weed and alcohol are legal where I live. That’s good enough for me, though I don’t drink.

By “legalized”, I think of the right of the state(s) to sell. I don’t agree with that. However, I’m not against recreational use should someone so choose. I’m also not in favor of criminalizing usage as I don’t think it solves the problems of the user or the addict.
SaorUladh · 26-30, M
There was a time when I would have said yes, but now I'm not so sure.

Perhaps it should be that possession of small amounts isn't criminalised anymore. I don't think it really helps addicts to be treated as criminals.
WowwGirl · 36-40, F
@SaorUladh good point
ABCDEF7 · M
NO

1. Legalizing them could lead to increased usage, contributing to higher rates of addiction, overdose, and long-term health problems like depression & anxiety and finally burdening public health systems, as treating drug-related health issues can be costly and challenging.

2. It may lead to more instances of impaired driving, workplace accidents, and higher crime rates, as individuals under the influence may engage in reckless or criminal behavior.

3. Legalization could send the message that drug use is socially acceptable, potentially leading to normalization among vulnerable populations, including young people. Moreover it leads to the promotion of behavior that is seen as harmful or self-destructive.

4. Drug use can have far-reaching effects on families, including broken homes, child neglect, and domestic violence. Legalization might inadvertently increase the strain on social services and welfare systems.

@ABCDEF7 Well said!
Yourwildestdreams · 51-55, M
No, never 👎. I’ve witnessed way to much damage to people and there lives due to drugs 😟
Sevendays · M
I read that they did this somewhere, Oregon or Washington maybe. Anyhow, it wasn't a success.
WowwGirl · 36-40, F
@Sevendays I think it was a experiment that flopped
@Sevendays Read my own comment.
WowwGirl · 36-40, F
@NativePortlander1970 sorry I don't multitask well
KingofBones1 · 46-50, M
No. And I say this as a person that actually deals in the narcotic world. There is a big difference between Marijuana and methamphetamine that is cut with fentanyl
Gibbon · 70-79, M
??? That looks like the thumb ball in my Logitech mouse.
WowwGirl · 36-40, F
@Gibbon okay
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@WowwGirl Oh I didn't answer the question. No.
WowwGirl · 36-40, F
@Gibbon it's fine
they tried that here in my province, but then the junkies and crack heads started doing it in tim hortons....so they recriminalized it....weed is legal though
MethDozer · M
@beermeplease I don't know if they need jail. They just need to be told to move from the public while using. Just like the booze hounds have to
@MethDozer you mean like in a home they are paying rent in that they've earned while working....i don't think you realize the magnitude of the homeless situation here
MethDozer · M
@beermeplease Or go to an abandoned building. Train tracks. Anywhere but the public park and sidewalk.
Elisbch · M
Possibly it could help in thinning out the crowd.
3Dogmatic · 46-50, M
Yes, tax them, regulate them and use the taxes to fund treatment and education. People are going to use them regardless.
Bumbles · 51-55, M
Absolutely not.

Look how it worked in oregon
Arnoldjrmmer · 56-60, M
I am all for it but randomly at a rate of one in fifty or so, a hit should be pure fentanyl just to cull the herd.
MethDozer · M
To an extent yes. I don't think New novel compounds need to be marketed but I don't think possession should be punished either.

Let's be real though. New novelty compounds only make it to the streets to circumvent laws. It's a problem created solely by prohibition.
pdockal · 56-60, M
Pot yes ... not sure about others

Would simplify things
Could bring in tax revenue
Could stem drug violence
MethDozer · M
Yes, nobody or government should have any say what someone does to their own body and consciousness. It's an assault on autonomy.

The exact same argument for abortion naturally and logically applies to substance use.
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
No! No! a million and one times, NO!

Degbeme · 70-79, M
No, the state of Oregon had to recently recriminalize hard drugs because crime exponentially sky rocketed around drug ridden areas of the state, it got really bad.
@NativePortlander1970 yup....they actually advised us not to decriminalize it up in canada....they were right
