just chuck me out with the garbage
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@Matt85 what about compost?
Matt85 · 36-40, M
@caPnAhab Yes, I would love to be food for plants. :)
@Matt85 I know, right? Food for something, at any rate.

I plan to be cremated. Pop and my middle sister hate the idea, but my brother (assuming I go first) has agreed to see that it happens.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@bijouxbroussard curious, can you tell why they hate it?
@caPnAhab Religious reasons. The Catholic Church allows it now, but burial is still preferable.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@bijouxbroussard ah understandable
I’ve told my family I don’t want a burial or funeral. Just scatter my ashes in the mountains.
TheOthetAcc · 36-40, M
@Colonelmustardseed I said the same. My mother was not happy with that. I told her if she ignores my request I'm going to haunt her forever
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@Colonelmustardseed plenty of mountains to choose from around here
@caPnAhab Yes. It doesn’t even have to be just one.
Yes. I'm actually planning on donating my body to science so they can study it. It would be great to end up at the body farm or as one of the cadavers used for mortuary or medical school training. 😊
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@DancingStarGoddess that seems noble
I want to rest with my son.

Casket does feel like a waste.
Why does every industry have to have packaging?
I truly don’t care what my family chooses to do with me. I’ll be dead.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@nonsensiclesnail my same thoughts. I'm won't be using my body any more. Might as well make it useful rather than just letting it sit in a box

Caskets were adopted from the ancient Egyptian mummy sarcophagus.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
I'm not going to do anything; being dead really limits your options, I'm going to leave it all to whoever feels like taking charge.
AlchemyFox · 36-40, F
I plan to go into the wilderness and be eaten.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@AlchemyFox Sometimes I imagine myself running away into the wilderness, living the rest of my life there

But this is the desert, so that'll take about three days.

How do you know is the right time? That sounds like a conscious decision
AlchemyFox · 36-40, F
@caPnAhab if it's cancer I'll know
there's a book by Mary Roach called 'Stiff' that goes into (as the subtitle calls it) 'the curious lives of cadavers'. there are some interesting alternative options being developed (or were; the book is many years old) to burial and cremation (cremation is often considered very unsound environmentally).

The two mehtods I remember best consisted of a bath of boiling caustic mix that left you as nothing more than a pile of bleached bones or a liquid nitrogen/ultrasonic reduction that turns a body into a smallish pile of compost that is then put into a container with a tree to be returned to people.

anyway, a good book to read, if you're interested in the range of things that can/have/may happen.
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
@stound " a liquid nitrogen/ultrasonic reduction that turns a body into a smallish pile of compost that is then put into a container with a tree to be returned to people. "

THIS IS HOW WE GET HAUNTED FORESTS PEOPLE
@Starcrossed worse, I think it's usually a fruit tree (it might be too chemically 'hot' for most other trees). so evil grandparents can take over the grandkids through the fruit. I'm onto the plot!
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@stound sort of morbid, but sounds interesting
Primnproper · 56-60, F
Ive already arranged mine, a pure cremation. No service or bells and whistles. Just taken cremated then the kids can place the ashes where they want to.

If they want they can have your ashes turned into diamonds.

If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
@TryingtoLava But let’s hope you don’t…

caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@TryingtoLava noted. But you are going to live a long and happy life.... dammit!
LilPrincess · 41-45, F
Cremation is the route I am going.
LilPrincess · 41-45, F
@OldMan70 I paid for 3 funerals and don't want my family to have to ensure that cost
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@LilPrincess
No I haven't paid for it yet. I will have to check that out though
Simply call the providers in your area.

Here's a typical example = https://www.tulsacremation.com/cremation-costs/cremation-plans

LilPrincess · 41-45, F
@Diotrephes thank ya. It was around a thousand when I paid for my nephew cremation. To bury my parents was 12k each. My mama pre bought her cemetery plot when I bought my dads
Carla · 61-69, F
Whatever still has value, is to be donated. Maybe my skin?
Ashes to be planted with a fruit tree on my family's land.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@Carlagood idea
GlitterEater · 36-40, F
I don't care. Whatever my family and friends want to do would be best. Funerals are for the living, the dead don't experience them.
I'm probably going to die at work and they can throw me away.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@Roundandroundwego thats relatable, for someone who doesn't know how to plan for retirement
@caPnAhab people can't really do that as individuals. Putting Granny and poppa out with the trash is a collective, political choice of the country. As a nation we need to provide.

robertsnj · 56-60, M
cremated. but back to you @caPnAhab why do you want to be buired at all. Rotting carcass? Trust me when I say the tree ain't going to eat your dead body.
@robertsnj That's why they eventually dig you back up and sell your plot to the next poor sap who wants to go there when they die.
robertsnj · 56-60, M
@HootyTheNightOwl if sap was your crack at a pun good job. Digging near a tree ain't good for the roots. Beside the joke/ pun (which was funny) lousy idea.

I have dug up roots on large trees before. It is crazy how far they go out and how deep they go. I only dug shallow ones for a back yard project--Far from the base of the tree. You have to cut them and the far ends with bolt cutters and dig them up in pieces.

Lumber backs will pulp the roots of trees they cut down and let the roots die over time. But how far and how deep they go is really something to behold. If the tree is like a city it is a city beneath the city.
@robertsnj Nah, no pun, Just a simple acknowledgement of how it's done.

They decided to build us a relief road in the 90's. They had to dig up an entire graveyard to do it because it's somewhere under the northbound carriageway now.

But 99 years after the last body goes into a plot, they can exhume the grave and sell it to the next customer.

This knowledge doesn't fill me with much joy either, when there are 2 graveyards here in town and both are filling fast.
Gangstress · 41-45, F
Just feed me to the animals and do a plaque
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Ceremation, the cheapest possible.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
I always thought cremation was the obvious answer.

Bit of a scandal going on here in the UK atm as funeral companies have taken millions from customers only for it to be revealed that certain companies and crematoria have a stockpile of corpses they can't incinerate due to licensed operating hours and a huge backlog from the covid debacle.

Loads of changes to laws in the appropriate disposal of also now means you can't be buried at home unless you have land; it's a required distance from your house; and the plot has to be incinerated and appropriately lined so you don't decompose and attract wildlife nor poison the groundwater.
Merkabah · 22-25, F
I cannot be buried in a casket or cremated. It goes against my religion.
@Merkabah What is the traditional way ?

There is a program where things like that happen.

Just get tossed at the local body farm.

@Jenny1234
I’m down with that
A good thing about living in modern America is that we have multiple choices for almost everything. As long as you're happy maybe you should look into it while you are able so that it will happen as you desire when you die.
I always tell my family not to waste money on me and just bury me in the garden that I so enjoy tending to.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@BridgeOvertroubledWaters I like that idea. If I had a garden, I'd do it
ArishMell · 70-79, M
Not decided but I may choose what is called a "direct cremation".

That is, with no ceremony within the crematorium. Mourners are allowed to gather in the grounds but not enter the chapel. It reduces the cost considerably, and is becoming quite popular.

I don't know if the cremation itself is carried out at the time or after the last service of the day, which I believe is the normal practice, and why the ashes are not available on the day.
Cigarguy101 · 41-45, M
I'll be dead so my opinion doesn't matter, I will leave it up to my family to choose. What ever helps them grieve.
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
I would like to be cremated with my ashes spread so the temporary urn can be pretty modest.
SW-User
I like the buried under a new tree idea.
@SW-User I don't because that tree could get removed. That's why I want to rest with my son.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@Spoiledbrat both are good reasons I think.

Perhaps you'll become part of a protected forest
Sevendays · M

Cremated

There are certain types of trees that can survive with human ash but it is quite toxic to flora. I like the thought of becoming a tree too
@Colonelmustardseed i was really surprised and only found this out when reading up on it when looking at what to do with my father-in-law's ashes. But there are certain trees that do thrive and grow and that does seem nice.... a place for birds and shade ❤️
@InOtterWords Very peaceful and beautiful. 🙂

Hopefully entombed in a crypt/mausoleum
Unfortunately, what I want done with my remains isn't legal in the United States. It's called a sky burial.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@LordShadowfire

it was an unintended fat joke lol

But I figured the reason involved animals up there eating them
@caPnAhab It does. Apparently, the US government feels it would be detrimental to the environment, but I don't quite understand how.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@LordShadowfire
If we are what we eat

And people eat so much processed garbage

Then I think I can see the reasoning
Donate your body to medical science.
