Something Ricky Gervais said about science and religion:

“If you could somehow erase all knowledge and all written record of both science and currently existing religions then come back in 1000 years time, science would come back because it’s observable, testable and works within a set of rules. But religion would stay gone, because there’s no continuing activity for it.”

I have always loved Rick Gervais’ point about this.

I’m a spiritual person but to hold religion over science is ludicrous.

Religion is an embarrassment on mankind. Thousands of years later and we still believe in a man that lives in the sky. Shit’s embarrassing.

I bet we'd become pagans again. Or Pantheists. Even in science there is a lot of unexplained, just cool shit. After years of biology I remember one professor telling the class, science explains everything but why. Why does the grass grow? What sparks life? Not the basic water, photosynthesis... But why grow at all? Why do creatures have the will to survive? Why all these miracles of science?

I'm not a religious person. I don't plan to be. But there is something more.
@AlchemyFox Even without knowing this ineffable "why," in the past 150 years science has doubled the human lifespan while removing much of the drudgery from life. Science has thus given you the most valuable gift - more time - for contemplating the ultimate questions.

Religion is, I think, the result of the fear of the unknown, of things beyond our capability to understand or control.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@Ontheroad As Hitchens says, it was our first and worst attempt to explain reality. We have learnt a lot in 6,000 years since.
Ontheroad · M
@JimboSaturn Yup. Exactly this.

Humans aren't built for a strictly scientific existence.

I've heard it said that it Gawd did not exist, man would feel the need to create one.

And based on the plethora of religious concepts - I'd have to say that was correct.

Still, humans need a philosphy of some kind to create order out of our interactions.

And we have a concept of "good" and "bad" - people often boil the definition down to a religious justification.

Science is real if it’s correct and proven, not paid for by rich satanic billionaires to control us with lies for years.

@WintaTheAngle

It’s everywhere, they push it constantly.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@Fairydust But what does that matter if there is no Satan?
Fairydust · F
@WintaTheAngle

Depends on what you believe I guess.
There would be new religions. There is an evolutionary reason for religion, which is why it exists in every human society.
@LeopoldBloom Most likely that's correct. But the point is, changing religions is like changing the wallpaper. Science made the house dry and warm and snug; religion is a high-visibility afterthought.
@LeopoldBloom @ElwoodBlues Are you two a couple?
@AtticEscapee Both humans, both male (I assume), both members of SW. I have no idea who he is IRL, and I assume the converse is also true.
If I was to pick the greatest invention of mankind, my choice would be the scientific method. An idea of methodology that works.

It's in a humans nature to ask why.
It's religions 'nature' to just accept, never question why and call that faith.

Faith without understanding is fine... so long as you don't get into positions of power and start discriminating on the value of anothers life based on your own belief.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I agree 100%.

He's not wrong
The death of all the pagan religions was a genocide, perpetrated on purpose by Christianity.
It's the precedent for Gaza! Yum. The right wing side doesn't want to know, it's too busy killing.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
Science is a religion.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@hippyjoe1955 Science isn’t a religion.

Science is an observation of physics, biology, and so on.

Religion is believing a magic man in the sky gives a shit about you.

Now shuffle along, you pointless old fuck.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@WintaTheAngle you have no idea what religion is. Science is the secular religion of ignorant secularists.like you. You have faith in the observations of man just like a Muslim has faith in Allah.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@hippyjoe1955 Okeydokey.
dale74 · M
I would have to disagree only because of the fact of how many religions there are
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@dale74 But that’s partly his point:

Religions only exist because people make them up. And if we accept that fact, what value are they?
dale74 · M
@WintaTheAngle well I do believe in God I also believe a lot of religions are there just to make the pastor's wealthy look for a church where the pastor has a large congregation but he himself or herself has a set salary not based on collections
elafina · 36-40, F
Mr Ricky hasn't introduced much magic upon his life apparently..
