Something Ricky Gervais said about science and religion:

“If you could somehow erase all knowledge and all written record of both science and currently existing religions then come back in 1000 years time, science would come back because it’s observable, testable and works within a set of rules. But religion would stay gone, because there’s no continuing activity for it.”

Humans aren't built for a strictly scientific existence.

I've heard it said that it Gawd did not exist, man would feel the need to create one.

And based on the plethora of religious concepts - I'd have to say that was correct.

Still, humans need a philosphy of some kind to create order out of our interactions.

And we have a concept of "good" and "bad" - people often boil the definition down to a religious justification.
