I once a friend lodging with me after his wife had kicked him out. I went away for a week with work and came home to find his girlfriend there with him. I don't know how long she had been there. He left the next day and I haven't seen him since. He had left me no food. Soon after, I received a massive phone bill. He had been phoning her mobile from my landline several times a day. Having friends can be overrated.
No....I wouldn’t do it. Absolutely not. A condo is something you own, and you have a right to be there....even if you might need to get out of the way at times. I don’t let people do anything in my house unless I’m there. You should be there if only to let them know that you’re around. You can always stay somewhere else overnight, but I’d keep control of the keys to my unit and not allow anyone in unless I let them in. In a condo, you own it.....i.e., YOU are the landlord (not the representative of the condo association). This is different than a co-op, in which you would own shares of stock and the management is in control. Never have the management decide.....in a condo, you own the unit and you have an absolute right to be there. There’s no reason for you not to be there.
@DragonFruitI’m renting, been here since I was 18. The owner is trying to get it all done, but mentioned us staying at a hotel for a month. I told her I want to be here anytime someone is here. It’s my home, everything inside is mine.
@MellyMel22 That’s different.....if you’re not the owner, the owner can ask you to vacate. However, she can’t stop you from showing up even if she has control of the unit. Has she told you not to be there? Just let her know that you’ll be present whenever anyone is working there....don’t ask, make sure she knows that you will be there.
@DragonFruitNot yet, but she did say before that they’d cover a hotel for a month. I don’t want that. I think she wants no one here, but she knows how I feel as of tonight about that. So we’ll see. It’s my belongings here, I think I have a right to be here.
I watch HGTV quite often, and designers usually require the owners to leave for 6 weeks or MORE.
If I had a relative with whom I could stay, without imposing...no problem. Naturally I would pack up all my valuables.
Marriott Hotels have what they call the Residence Inn, where my mother stayed after the attic caught fire in her home. The house was unlivable.
If the renovation is because of a fire or water damage or ANYTHING covered by insurance, then insurance companies will pay for your hotel. Otherwise, just rent a mobile home and stay in it on your own property.

Renovating house needs a lot of money and patience now-a-days. Labour rates aren't economical anymore. You have to check for the best economical quote. Inflation is affecting every sector across the globe.
I would visit my house once or twice everyday to check the work progress. I don't have to worry if my stuff is safe under lock and key. In case, there's something extremely valuable (For me, it's my PC, PS5 and Music System) then I'll take it with me before the renovation team begin their work.
No way. But my parents did that decades ago -- they were planning to retire to a house in Florida back in the 1970s and each year they would choose a room to renovate, arrange things with a contractor, then leave until the next year. The contractors all were honest and did the work and by the time my parents retired the house was finished the way they wanted it to be.

@Ambroseguy80You should’ve seen when they put my screen door that they damaged back on. The main guy(the father) was so proud of himself. The door was fully closed! Squirrels could go through that damn space. I said, “you’re f-ing kidding me, right?!” You could see the outside ground from the inside of the closed screen 😑 it also had what looked like battery acid all over it.
@NothingLikeYouThe owner of my place is having I believe someone she knows. My kids’ dad used to tell me when he worked doing that stuff and still does that some guys will go through stuff and not even take anything. He’s said things to them about it too. To me, I’d even being disturbed by then using my utensils and going through my cabinets 🤭
@StarmaidenIt’s a bathroom and possibly kitchen at the same time(nothing like you mentioned). They said they’d pay for a hotel for the month, but I’m not comfortable w/people in my home alone. It gives me all kinds of bad feelings.
@SW-User Jewelry, collectors things, the idiot kids’ fathers boxes of cards- one worth over $10,000- not something you wanna carry around.. and more. As well as personal clothing. I have a teen girl too, who knows what kinda people they are.

From what we saw last summer remodeling my mom’s house, if you let many of these contractors do whatever they want with no supervision, they will try to cut corners.
@SW-User I believe it. My kids’ dad has worked w/guys who argued w/him to do just that. He didn’t like doing that. That’s one thing about him I give him credit for, he does the work as it should be done.. we don’t own this place, so they have their own people coming.

@MellyMel22 The older foreman on the job was better, but initially they were sending over these younger guys unsupervised, and many were wanting to be just standing around in their phones all the time. When they tried to do work, they didn’t seem to know what they were doing. They were used to renovating low income apartment buildings with nobody watching them. My mom had to complain repeatedly about them, and eventually they all were fired, and the foreman did most of the rest of the work.
@QueendragonflyYeah, my nerves are twisted at just the thought. If I end up having to, I have a 4 pack of indoor cams in my Amazon cart ready to go. The rooms being worked on wouldn’t be my concern, it’s the living room and bedrooms. But it also would disturb me knowing people were in home alone 😞 I’m trying to be here alone, so I hope the landlord doesn’t give me a prob.
@MusicmanI thought of that, but there’s something wrong with the frames- the doors push open. Also there are things in my living worth a lot of money that can’t really be moved given there’s no space in the bedrooms when we put other stuff in them.
We’ll see though. The landlord and contractor are coming in less than 2 hours to make the plans.
