name a scam so prevalent we have forgotten it is one

I'll go first: marriage, when it is for the sake of a) the cessation of loneliness, b) having children as accessories, c) getting the house you couldn't afford alone, d) serving a man hand and foot because it is your sole role and ultimate purpose as a woman. e) buying your woman everything because you are solely a "provider" with a to-do list.

Tax tax tax 🤨
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@SW-User do you have any knowledge of how capital gains work? legit wondering
SW-User
@foldedunfolding

No idea, isn’t that if you have a business?
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@SW-User "Do you have to paycapital gainstax on a home sale? That depends. You could owe capital gains tax if you sell a home that hasappreciatedin value because it is a capital asset. However, thanks to theTaxpayer Relief Act of 1997, most homeowners are exempt from needing to pay it.1

If you are single, you will pay no capital gains tax on the first $250,000 of profit (excess overcost basis). Married couples enjoy a $500,000 exemption.2However, there are some restrictions."

Taxes on pensions....carbon tax...import tax..inheritance tax

Just generally taxes everywhere
SW-User
@GeistInTheMachine DUUUDE!!!
There are countries where you can completely avoid paying taxes and do whatever you like! Somalia is an excellent example of such a place!!

I hear all these folks whining about taxes and yearning for a libertarian paradise, and yet they remain in their high-tax restrictive law homes and simply whine.

Where oh where is there a libertarian with the courage of their convictions???

GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@ElwoodBlues I don't like libertarians.

The taxation is a scam because we don't even get what we put in. We have socialism in reverse.

When I agree with the right, it is usually a yes AND.

Same with when I agree with the Libs.

I have some common ground with people, but of course part of the reason I don't really bother discussing this sort of crap with people is that inevitably someone like yourself will crawl under the woodwork with loaded lables like commie or libertarian.

Trite binary baby logic.

@foldedunfolding Because it's a scam of course

@kodiac truth.

@kodiac cool story bro..thank you for your cogent critique
Domestic abuse rights...

They tell you to run from abusive relationships - yet, if you do... you can be found to have intentionally made yourself homeless. It doesn't even matter if you have police reports and social services telling councils that you were living with abuse.
@foldedunfolding You don't "qualify" for emergency accommodation - so, if you can't get a place in a refuge (underfunded and in high demand - last time I tried to find a place, there was nowhere suitable within three counties of me)... you're either out on the streets with the rough sleepers or you're forced to return to your abuser.

Women who sleep rough are at increased risk of getting raped. As someone who doesn't feel safe with strange men, I'd feel safer hitch hiking my way down the country with strange men than sleeping out on the streets.

We can provide emergency accommodation for refugees from Afghanistan and Ukraine with next to no questions asked... but we can't do the same thing for a survivor of domestic abuse unless she has children.

To add to my last response about the food pyramid being a scam, the author of The Big Fat Surprise said they found that 95% of the committee (I don't remember what but it belonged to the government) had ties to cereal giants, for instance one had 150 ties to cereal giants. They essentially pay for grants that say their cereal is healthy and then it gets recommended to the general populace.
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
@SatanBurger Fake sweeteners like Nutrasweet, Splenda, etc. are very much a scam yet sooooo many people buy into them. Same can be said for margarine (I'm a user of that).
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@zonavar68 Oh yeah there was new science regarding Sucralose and found that it alters DNA in a bad way and apparently some artificial sweeteners give heart attacks. I've also been guilty of overuse of margarine, but I was plant based at that time so since then I've switched to kerrygold butter, I can find that in CostCo in bulk either that or ghee but ghee is considerably more expensive, however it's somehow lactose free due to the style so it's a taste preference thing.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout lordt you are a whole trumper..i saw your other crap..time for me to block you
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
Too true about marriage. It has kind of always been sketch, though. Historically, many people often married for power or out of desperation.

I think it is also sad that YouTube ads/commercials are mostly scams now.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@foldedunfolding It happens. If it doesn't kill me, it will make me stronger, so no worries.

But yes, I hear you. It's quite a joke in the end. If someone loves you, they will stick it out for and with you. If they don't they won't. Marriage is not true security. It's a legal document. One that can be triangulated against you.

I have had some relationships that have been quite bad, and if I had been married it would have been much worse. Lessons learned.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@GeistInTheMachine yeah it is this disney idea that you have reached some kind of closure..but worse: completion. if you are of the idea that you REQUIRE completion..you, kinda by definition, are not ready for marriage.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@foldedunfolding If someone wants a "disney" style relationship or marriage - run.
plungesponge · 41-45, M
I think my parents had kids to be employees

@plungesponge Hispanic parents?
romell · 51-55, M
Democracy..government of the people for the people ..what a joke
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@romell Democracy always required a truly educated, curious and engaged citizenry. That was always its Achilles Heel.
romell · 51-55, M
@GeistInTheMachine absolutely and the powers to be realized its easier to garner idiots than the educated, sane rational people who are obviously out numbered..hence befits the name MOBOCRAZZY
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@romell Exactly.

Stupidity has been weaponized. Both literally and metaphorically.

And by stupid I don't mean those who do not share my worldview. I mean those who do not share my curiosity or my ability to admit I could always be wrong.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
The food pyramid is the greatest scam of all time. So much dirty stuff regarding that, the following video is so much information but basically America sold Russia grain during the Soviet era which then became one profitable ordeal for America. Which got the secretary of agriculture thinking at the time who bribed farmers every time they sold grain to the Soviet Union so they got massive money. The world no longer had a grain shortage so all the free money that was given to them was being threatened.

Then the secretary of agriculture had to think of some alternative and at the time, people were getting sick with heart disease, thus the meat and fat hypothesis related to heart disease was born and next the food pyramid.

But here's the thing, they did nearly a dozen studies and found that the people who ate the most seed oils died faster and younger. But the secretary of agriculture and the United States managed to convince people that grains were good for the heart.

Then, this is why hospital food is like that is because it was all of a sudden regulated by the government that they had to give 11 servings of grains a day to patients despite knowing what seed oils do. Then schools had to make things like brownies just to keep up the fiber requirements the Govt sent out and then school food was born which looks like a snack vending machine most times and that's why.

Greatest scam of all time, hands down. Managed to make all of the populace even more obese due to money hungry farmers and the big agriculture industry.

@MarmeeMarch Big box hardware is aka 'the rise of the Chinese dodo'. Big box supermarkets are not much different as they import more and more of the product they sell. Same with big box auto parts stores.

Great ones indeed. I'd like to add churches (not necessarily religion or faith) and capitalism.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@NerdyPotato yes!!! and im a christian! i believe that churches should be taxed!
Jackaloftheazuresand · 26-30, M
racial injustice
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@Jackaloftheazuresand let me add to that: the notion that white people are the default racists, when many of us are staunch allies
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
It's a revolving door these days. People complain that they're treated differently, and when they're treated the same, they complain because they're not being treated differently...

Livingwell · 61-69, M
Or F) massive sex 4x a day until you're married, then immediately stopping but presenting a long demand list only to divorce him later and take half of what he has.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@Livingwell yes!!!! i am a christian, so i guess im supposed to believe in no sex till marriage. but there is a HUGE something to be said for having to work for it. we wonder why men cheat..it is bc marriage is a largely disney princess fantasy for the girl..and a built-in slave for the guy.
Livingwell · 61-69, M
@foldedunfolding Having been married a few times, I can say there are few if any slaves. Lots of pushy women. People with low self esteem are easy targets though for abusive men. I've personally helped several women escape an abusive man. It all starts with family isolation and jealousy.

As for working for it, I say that a man must prove his worth to a woman to receive that special gift. As for why men cheat, it could be because of menopause, other interests of the wife, lack of attention, a power play by the wife, and receiving attention not received at home. Relationships are hard and require work. The "love is all you need" is a fools dream. Like anything, you get out what you put in. That goes for both sides.
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
Increasing the prices unjustly on food. We go "oh that's expensive" but we forget that it can be a rip-off just because it's in a store. If it was a person selling it to us personally we'd go and look elsewhere, but if it's in a store we're much more lenient, thinking that it legitimizes it.
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
I know so many people who've done A.
Makes me happy I have yet to get married one day.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@basilfawlty89 this is why i have worked so hard to own my own vehicles and home. i didnt want to be a "kept" woman, and i want to only marry for love.
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@foldedunfolding the worst is serial monogamy, when someone starts dating and then getting engaged without even grieving the previous marriage. Sucks for everyone involved at the end of the day.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
College. Expensive af, no guarantee you will land a job in your field and you're left owing a metric f**kton of money.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@uncalled4 YES!!!!! GREAT CALL OUT!!!! i deliberately left the path prescribed to me by my family and deigned not to attend. i decided to work my way up where i was, and go after the house FIRST. if i want to get a TRADE after, so be it. but ppl wonder why the average number of lifetime careers is 6..entire CAREERS?? mayybee bc we force 18 yr olds to know what they want to do the rest of their existence, at. that. age.
Punches · 46-50, F
@foldedunfolding @uncalled4
That is why there is a lot of student debt that people cannot pay. Go to college and you still end up working a dead beat job half the time. Of course then society acts like it is your fault when that happens. Usually people that point out others' lack of success are unsuccessful themselves.

mayybee bc we force 18 yr olds to know what they want to do the rest of their existence, at. that. age.
I am 48 and still do not know what I want to be when I grow up.

Funny how society treats kids that age like they are so dumb, do not know anything about anything YET they are suppose to know enough to have these big future plans.
I do not razz young people about not having their plans in order because I have not forgotten what it was like at that age.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@Punches LOUDER FOR THE FOLKS IN THE BACK!! ALL OF THIS!!!
