Jury duty In CA…

For about ten years I received a jury summons each year, and the process was the following: I called on the day indicated after 5:00 pm, entered my juror number and the recording told me whether or not to appear the following morning. If I wasn’t needed, I had to call at 11:00 am the next day to see if I was needed that afternoon. If not, I was excused and had satisfied my commitment. I wasn’t called since 2019, but now I received a summons and I’m committed to check in every day for a week ! What tf happened ? Is this how it’s done in other states ?

I've received a jury summons several times in my life, but never once each year. The first time I received one back in the 80's, it was when the world really had turned upside down, in my little 'nuclear' family. I was excused.
Twice when I've received a summons here in this county, I've gone through the whole showing up process and talk the group of potential jurors are given. Both times, I went back at the designated time just to be told that something had happened and all potential jurors were no longer needed. As I recall, we were told we'd receive a call if no longer needed.

Anyway....I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get an extension. I hope you'll be able to do something, so this won't interfere with your plans to spend time with your dad on his birthday.

I've been summoned for jury duty 3 times in my entire life. All 3 times i ignored it. Never heard another word. Back in the 1950s-60s when my mother would have jury duty the summons came by registered mail and you had to sign for it. Now it comes in the regular mail just like junk mail. I was going to go the second time just to tell them there is no such thing as the truth, I don't believe in God, and I would never put anyone in prison in this horrible country and I thought I might mention I've been half-deaf since I was 11. i checked my number and there were something like 2,000 people scheduled for that day. Obviously not many people take it seriously.
@hunkalove I always hear about people ignoring their summons. But I know how my luck tends to run.

In my jurisdiction, you go on the list for a year. You get notified about upcoming potential appearances and need to check if required. Used to be a single call up but now changed. I'm currently on the list and potentially on duty next week. I've wanted to do jury duty for years and now, hopefully, I'll get the chance.
@Bushranger The timing for me is bad. I would’ve gotten an extension had I known I was committed for the whole week.

@bijouxbroussard Do you have a legitimate reason to be excused? If not, try to think of something that would get you out of it.
@Bushranger My father’s birthday is this week, he’ll be 90. I still intend to go, but I’ll just have to cut my visit short, if I’m selected. First I’ll see if I have any other options.

Nope. It's a much less arduous process where I live.

We're told to call a number provided with the summons, usually after 5:00 PM the day (or weekend) before jury duty is scheduled to start. If we're told that we don't have to report for duty, that's the end of it. We've satisfied our commitment for the time being.
@Rutterman That’s how it used to be for us, but I was told today that they changed it because of Covid. Since they can’t have as many people gathered in the courthouse, they’re stretching out the time.

@bijouxbroussard I see. Guess they're doing the best they can with the situation. Too bad they couldn't find some other way to deal with it, a way that's less burdensome for prospective jurors.

We call in the night before. If we are needed in the pool we report the next day. We are obligated for one day or one trial. Whichever takes the longest. If we are not selected on the first day our obligation is done. If we are selected for a trial we are done when the trial is finished. I don't remember if we are done for one or two years.
@bowman81 That’s exactly how it’s always been here, but apparently the process has changed in the last couple of years.

In this state you can pre-register and fill out a questionaire online. They respond with "you're excused for the rest of the year" or a court assignment. People over a certain age are excused unless they want jury duty.

Watch for mail marked "first class.". And check your mailbox frequently.

I have only been called once in my entire life, and didn’t have to actually serve on one. Wow if you keep getting called sooner or later your luck will run out.
I wish you well.
@monte3 In my state, if I make it to 70 I can claim exempt status from then on.
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
It works that way in New York....you make 1 phone call a day, and if you're not selected you call the next day until the end of the week.
If you've served on a jury, they usually don't contact you for a few years.
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
I have been called once for county court. Who knew that my hobby (model railroading) would get me excused? Twice I have been called for federal court but only served on a jury once.
tindrummer · M
probably a different court with different procedures
@tindrummer I actually got to talk to someone today, and he said they changed the process because of Covid. Fewer people can be gathered at one time, so they’re stretching the time out.
tindrummer · M
@bijouxbroussard smart move on their part
@tindrummer Yes, but inconvenient as hell. It used to be a week’s commitment.
Abstraction · 61-69, M
Goodness. It's never happened to me. If I wasn't busy I wouldn't mind doing it.
Lonelyandyb · 36-40, M
I don’t know 🤷. I got out of jury duty with a letter from a specialist (twice)
Dino11 · M
But they pay so well for jury duty. 😆
@Dino11 Wasn’t it like $5.00 a day ? 😅
Dino11 · M
@bijouxbroussard Right, the big bucks...😅

Can't comment, Canadian. I've never been summoned or how it entirely works here, but I can say I'm honestly glad I haven't been, I wouldn't want to be one who has to have to make a decision on someone's fate.
Justenjoyit · 61-69, M
Thats what happeneds when you put your name down for free stuff lol
@Justenjoyit No, that’s what happens when you exercise your right to vote or drive. I’m never looking for handouts. 😳
Justenjoyit · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard I was being sarcastic, the government is always using us in some way.

That's about how it works here unless they fill the spots earlier.
