Jury duty In CA…

For about ten years I received a jury summons each year, and the process was the following: I called on the day indicated after 5:00 pm, entered my juror number and the recording told me whether or not to appear the following morning. If I wasn’t needed, I had to call at 11:00 am the next day to see if I was needed that afternoon. If not, I was excused and had satisfied my commitment. I wasn’t called since 2019, but now I received a summons and I’m committed to check in every day for a week ! What tf happened ? Is this how it’s done in other states ?

Nope. It's a much less arduous process where I live.

We're told to call a number provided with the summons, usually after 5:00 PM the day (or weekend) before jury duty is scheduled to start. If we're told that we don't have to report for duty, that's the end of it. We've satisfied our commitment for the time being.
@Rutterman That’s how it used to be for us, but I was told today that they changed it because of Covid. Since they can’t have as many people gathered in the courthouse, they’re stretching out the time.

@bijouxbroussard I see. Guess they're doing the best they can with the situation. Too bad they couldn't find some other way to deal with it, a way that's less burdensome for prospective jurors.
