Does free speech exist in USA? Can you say what you want?

Yes, in that you are unlikely to go to jail or otherwise lose your freedom over something you say or type.
But it’s not "consequence-free" speech.
If you say something that is very unpopular or considered hateful, you still run the risk of being challenged, losing relationships or even a job, and if you’re saying it in person rather than online, there’s still the possibility of being punched in the nose.
@Queendragonfly What stats are you looking for specifically ? The percentage of people in the U.S. who have gotten their doors kicked in and were hauled off to jail for something they said ? I have not had that specific experience, and the few I knew who have were of my parents’ generation.

Losing one’s profile on social media isn’t the same experience. Privately owned websites can be run by the owners’ guidelines. People are finding that out, but then social media isn’t something the authors of the U.S. Constitution could ever have imagined.
@Pinkstarburst Yes, I’m beginning to see this. 🙁

@bijouxbroussard So you are that insecure huh? Wish you well.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
Not without being discriminated no. We saw what happened during covid with those who didn't wanna take the vaccine. Looking at what happened in the US if you were against vaccines made me really see how dark the reality is and that the people have been stripped of their HUMAN rights and no one can do anything about it or they are silenced. Absolutely terrifying.
@Queendragonfly Perhaps it’s because I’m of a different generation and can remember classmates who were polio survivors, even 5-10 years after vaccines were available . And you can relate fear to whatever conspiracy theories you’ve picked up on right wing sites. I have much more reason to be afraid than you, because it’s my country and I know its history; I’ve lived through some of it. But I look at it this way: with all the white doctors and professionals, techies, receiving the vaccines—these are not folks the U.S. wants to kill off. And among my own family & friends, I lost people to the virus itself—no one to the vaccine.

@bijouxbroussard US and your sides, ugh, so tiring. Can't you ever discuss something without thinking someone is this or that? Or is it just me who do that?
@Queendragonfly You don’t live here, so you don’t understand. I can’t help you with that.
graphite · 61-69, M
No. If you say something the left doesn't like, it's branded as "hate speech" and you may face repercussions.
@graphite @graphite but can you go to prison for something you say ?
graphite · 61-69, M
@Zenbra There's already been a guy in Belgium thrown in jail for making tasteless, disgusting remarks about women. A woman in Finland was put on trial for quoting the Bible, the "Bible as hate speech" trial.
fanuc2013 · 51-55, F
@Zenbra Of course! If the left can twist it around and call it " Hate speech"
Yes, we do. Just because we can say whatever we want doesn’t mean we alway should though. People forget that there are repercussions to their words, especially when spoken in cruelty or hate. Just because we can say something, doesn’t always mean it’s appropriate to say them. People have lost their penchant for discernment.

@Pinkstarburst I don't have to live in America to know the laws there.

I'm not talking about hate speech? The topic is freedom of speech and whether not it exists in US.

If you tell a stranger you don't care and they can't impact your sleep, you have already proved the opposite lol.

@Pinkstarburst I have no need to take anything personally. It was just a debate and you lost the argument. A bit dissapointing as I hoped for a good debate instead of talking about your feelings, but that's ok. I hope you'll be alright.
@sunsporter1649 is it illegal to say something, Like criticise jews, women, etc
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@BohemianBoo "Why was The Adventures of Tom Sawyer banned?"
Convivial · 26-30, F
Only if you can either run really quick or have a room full of lawyers
@Convivial So its not actually legal?
Convivial · 26-30, F
@Zenbra let's just say the states are rather litigious
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@Zenbra Eleanor Roosevelt made a freedon of speech law under human rights 1948 but US is corrupt and there's many times where people were rejected for challenging the government and the state, Martin L King is one of the examples.
Only if it’s approved by the progressives …

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout what about racism or hate speech?
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@Zenbra We all love talking about racin....

fanuc2013 · 51-55, F
Only if the leftists agree with it.
@sunsporter1649 Alright, now you're just ignoring what I'm saying because you know you're wrong.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@BohemianBoo Is that what they told you to say?
@sunsporter1649 Who's they?
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
You have the right to say whatever you want, but at some point you are held responsible for what you have said. The example that gets paraded out the most is yelling "fire" in a crowded theater. Speech that causes injury to others is something that limits what is appropriate to say. I guess the actual charge if there was one would be inciting civil unrest. The reality of the US court system and laws is that you can sue anyone for anything in a civil court, The current idea in politics is to censor the speech of the opposition, it really doesn't matter which side you are one, the other side is trying to control what gets to be aired in public forums.
4meAndyou · F
You MAY say whatever you want, but you MIGHT be sorry later.

I've found it best to keep my mouth shut.
Teirdalin · 31-35
I always do and I'm doing great
@Teirdalin France
Teirdalin · 31-35
@Zenbra Very cool. :)
@Teirdalin thank you
Philth · 46-50, M
I'm friends with an English teacher who left the US because of the increase in books that have been banned. And I'm not referring to books containing hate or racism, but books which are the opposite of hard-right flagshaggery. I believe that in the US you call anything that's not extreme capitalist exploitation, 'communism'
fanuc2013 · 51-55, F
@Philth "hard right" people are not condoning banning children's books like Dr Suess's work, or Mark Twain.
Expressman · 61-69
Totally free speech doesn't exist.
Northwest · M
Guaranteed by 1st amendment.
Northwest · M
@Zenbra it’s not that complicated. You can say whatever you want, but I don’t have to either listen to you OR provide a platform to amplify your hate.
@Northwest so if a nazi starts talk about hatred of Jews or similar... That's allowed by law?
fanuc2013 · 51-55, F
@Zenbra theoretically yes
Heartlander · 80-89, M
Yea, as long as you are responsible for the consequences.

We are free to yelll FIRE- FIRE in a crowded movie theater, but if there really isn't a fire we may have hell to pay.
IWasCallingYaLarry · 26-30, M
No, there's no such thing as freedom of speech.
@IWasCallingYaLarry thank you for responding with honesty.
IWasCallingYaLarry · 26-30, M
@Zenbra Sure. And yeah freedom of speech used to be a thing but now USA is the same as other countries like england or canada where you have the "wrong" type of opinion, you get thrown in jail for it or the FBI comes to your house to terrorize you so that you shut your mouth, etc. Freedom of speech does not exist. America has become China 2.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@IWasCallingYaLarry Corruption is the only absolute in this world.
ABCDEF7 · M
I guess the people are speaking so much freely today in public that it never has been in history of humankind. If they have spoken so freely in past, they can't imagine what could have happed to them.
Freedom of speech and speech without consequences are not the same thing. Every action including speech is subject to consequences.
TheBannibalOne · 61-69, M
No it isn't.😒

@Queendragonfly what I mean is , if you say racism or hate speech is it legal?
Lucia · 36-40, T
@Queendragonfly But that is not a dent in the free spech - that is a consequence of your opinion. I also can't say all trans people are mentally disabled, and expect them to invite me for birthday parties.

Words have consequences. But you have a right to say them none the less.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@Zenbra No. No sort of harassments are legal in US what I know of.
