If you are buying a real Christmas tree, you have to let the branches settle for about 48 hours before decorating.

Any time after December 1st is okay for putting up your tree and decorating it, unless you have strong family traditions that prevent you from decorating till Christmas Eve.

In some families, no tree decorating till Christmas Eve!

My nephew was born on December 9. Rule in our family was nothing went up before 12/10 in order to not detract from his birthday. Since the holiday is supposed to actually stretch to King's Day (1/6) later was better anyway. Except 1/6 was nephew's father's birthday.
