Is it normal to have suicidal thoughts when you've become crippled??

I've got a herniated disc in my neck and it's causing me physical pain, numbness the whole works, I've been thinking of ending it all so I don't need to deal with this anymore.... yes there's surgery but what happens if I come out more broken than what I am...

Oh stop ! That surgery is very common and has a very high success rate . Only you being ridiculous is the issue . Don’t screw around and make this worse . Go see a neurologist or go to the ER . Get an MRI then get it fixed

@TexChik 3 discs are munted, I've done all of those things, I just feel if I don't get movement then that'd be a waste

I wouldn't end it all because I needed surgery.

I had a friend once who worked in the same office at the homeless shelter where I used to work. The disc in her neck was actually deteriorating, and she needed to have it replaced.

There is a hospital called St. Lukes in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, with a surgeon who specializes in replacing discs in the neck with ceramic discs.

She had the surgery. They went in through the front of her neck with a long vertical incision. Replaced her disc. She had a sore throat for a few weeks afterward, and the incision healed as a faint white line.

I have had a herniated disc in my lower back, and I know how painful it it. They do heal all by themselves in the lower back. It takes about a year, sometimes 2 years if you keep re-injuring the area.

If you are already THIS depressed because you honestly can't believe in the possibility of healing, then you need to go and see a counselor and talk about feeling better.

Sounds normal. Your life is dramatically changed, you're depressed, can't see a way out other than death.

Seems like a normal emotional response to a desperate and seemingly helpless situation that you are unable to change.

Plan for the worst. What will you do if the worst happens after the op? How will you make your life enjoyable? Explore what you will be able to do.

But hope for the best.

That's all you can do right now till you know what happens after the op. So rest, try to do things that are restful and watch funny TV and distract yourself as much as possible. Avoid depressing programs and stuff that requires alot of thought.

Give yourself a complete mental break as much as possible.

That's what I think, it's a normal emotional reaction. If you start to feel like you might act on suicidal thoughts then get medication to help you. Also get a counselor if possible.

Much luck.

Please don’t ever resort to that. I know your pain might be worse than I could ever imagine, but please stay strong. We’ve lost our uncle for almost the same reason( unbearable back/spinal chord pain) took his own life. He was a good man and he did not deserve that tragic death he caused to himself. There were so many beautiful things he could have experienced if he chose to live.. And his passing has left permanent dark clouds to his remaining loved ones.
We only live once and will end up dying anyway so please continue to live and choose life.. Life is short already..I hope and pray you’ll get better. Stay strong .
I say why chance it...get a rope.

Yeah sure there is a surgical way to fix your problem...but I think what you want more than your neck fixed is sympathy. I think you should play up how bad your life is instead of doing anything about it and then bathe in the glow of the "aw poor baby" comments you get on here.

@anythingoes477 Okay.. I believe it would have been better if you posted that experience in the story section so people can get the inspiration of how you’re the better and stronger man, in order to serve the purpose of this website..
Or for my case, I should have posted also about my uncle killing himself due to the same pain so others could be aware that this kind of suffering could make a person resort to suicide..,which should never never be an option...
I just hope we see this site as it is,
@TessDun Oh I see it as it is. That's why I come here.......amusement.

Ahhh okay... nice trolling.,, @anythingoes477

I wouldn't describe it as normal but it's definitely an option, especially if you're a glass-half-empty kind of person anyway. There are lots of worse things that could happen though (than being crippled) and it's not necessarily a barrier against living an enormously rewarding life if you adopt a health attitude.

What TexChik said, but yes. Feeling suicidal after traumatic injuries is common. Doesn't mean you have to follow through with it, but yeah, you feel enough like shit that you want it to stop.
Keepitdown · F
What if you have surgery and it works! Don’t you want to considering being around to see?
Arizv11 · 31-35, M
@Keepitdown but if it doesn't work and makes me worse???
Keepitdown · F
Then take the options from that point, but at least try@Arizv11

I have 3 discs pressing on my spine, am in constant pain, and have been slowly losing feeling in my legs for about 5 years now (I cannot feel the front of my legs at all).

I, have not committed suicide.

Are you suicidal only because of your medical condition?
Arizv11 · 31-35, M
@SW-User Yes, I had a normal life before this happened 10 months ago, can't do anything anymore with my arms
SW-User
I understand. I’m really sorry. It sucks. Especially being in pain. I hope it gets better. @Arizv11

At least give the surgery a chance.
Arizv11 · 31-35, M
@Entwistle but what if I come out the other end more fucked up??
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@Arizv11 That's a possibility but so is the fact that it may help you.
You are needed ... it is as simple as that
