When you join sites, like SW, do you have rules for yourself that you try to live by?

For example, I don't block people and I don't delete comments on my post, I don't care how vulgar or inappropriate they are. I also don't or at least try not to, resort to personal attacks on people. I have been blocked by about five users and have had several comments deleted, simply for voicing my opinion! To me, that is being a coward. I know I can be a little sarcastic and have humor people don't "get" but I've never been mean spirited or vulgar. Another rule I have is, I will delete your comments if you delete mine! I think that is fair. Do you have rules for yourself?
akindheart · 61-69, F
i act as myself. i don't have a second personality but if anyone shows disrespect or attacks me, i block. giving an opinion is good. i like hearing different points of view but some on here can't do that
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@akindheart It hasn't happened on this site but other sites, people have really gotten nasty with me. I also think it is a lot tougher for women, because you have to deal with certain male behavior.

@akindheart You're actually the second woman that has talked about "jealousy", I actually saw a lot of that on another site. I actually personally knew two women that were pretty and really nice and a lot of people liked them on the site but other girls constantly accused them of being a guy! The two girls eventually left the site because they were tired of being questioned and because I defended them and said I personally knew them, people accused me of actually being them, that I had two fake female accounts. It was sickening!

Sometimes you just have to muffle the noise , or just turn it completely off

There is nothing cowardice about blocking or muting someone...

For me , it's just measured maintenance ..
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@BobbyMoeven To me, it depends on the reason for blocking. If someone wants to take part in a discussion involving differing opinions but thinks their's is the only one that matters and they delete all RESPECTFUL but differing opinions, to me, that's being a coward.
BobbyMoeven · 51-55, M
@WizardofOz

I don't over think it ...

I am not here as a vigilante or anything ,

If you are a hindrance to my path here , you are most likely to be muted or blocked ..
I try to make people smile, feel understood, be helpful, not give in to my sometimes negative tendencies and refrain from butting in when I see them in others. Not my business, not my job. General rule of thumb- if I’m not having fun, that’s a red flag and time for some course correction.
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@OlderSometimesWiser I actually try not to give opinions on questions I know will probably lead to an argument but sometimes it's hard! When it comes to situations like that, I will only comment if I know I'm 100% right.
@WizardofOz Oh yes, I agree, it can be very hard! And I don’t always succeed at keeping my yap shut. But I’m getting better at having a little talk with myself before partaking in what is usually fruitless internet arguing.
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@OlderSometimesWiser Damn! You and I are a lot alike lol I actually talk to myself about it! "Is it even worth it? I know it's just gonna tailspin into a non-stop argument, do I really need that in my life"? Then, I'll even go back to the question a few times and give myself the pep talk all over again!
robertsnj · 56-60, M
I don't delete comments either. I blocked 2 people in 8 years on here. One of them I don't remember why.

I think in terms of goals on sites like this as opposed to rules. For example

my goal when I first joined SW was to have private pm's and 1x1 conversations. Early covid it was to socialize and now it is mostly to be interactive on the forums (which I didn't do for years)

My goal on FB is to reconnect with friends in my past that I no longer live near. To interact in groups based on shared hobbies

My goal on LinkedIn is business networking.

My goal on Quora (which changed due to the sites changes) was to ask really smart people questions they were experts on and to learn from subject matter experts in areas I was under-educated on.
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@robertsnj Excellent. I really don't have "goals", I just wanna have fun, meet new people and maybe learn something. Your goals are great!
As long as it does not violate site rules, I will do as I see fit on MY posts and MY profile.

I hope that's OK. 😏
@WizardofOz Because your tone is of preaching. As if you are somehow morally superior.
Reread your own post and tell me I am wrong.
Then look at this:

WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@NoThanksLeon I was asking for your answers, correct? Read my replies to other people that replied, I'm anything but preachy, I totally understand why people do what they do.
@WizardofOz And I gave my answer. 🙂
itsok · 31-35, F
I do what makes me most comfortable. I don’t see any reason to continue putting up with someone that irks me. It’s not doing anyone any favors, and I don’t feel like it helps me be a better person.
Having expectations for other people that you’ve put upon yourself is just setting you up for disappointment.
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@itsok Very good points. I learned some of the things you've mentioned.
mooncrest02 · 31-35, F
I dont really have rules and just decide as I go. I dont block anyone unless theyre being really disrespectful to me and I dont delete comments unless they seem very disrespectful also. Idc if anyone deletes my stuff or disagrees.
Blondily · F
Don't get involved emotionally with anyone, spend only a few minutes on here, dont share too much, keep an invisible wall up at all times, don't take things seriously on here. Thats about it.
I've dropped any of those ideals. I'm not here to entertain people that have insincere motives.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
I try to call em as I see em.

@smiler2012 I seem to remember you said something about Liverfool being in the FA Cup Final.
What happened there? 😆
darkmere1983 · 46-50, M
yes i block people who i don't like the look of and who i disagree with or just object to, and i don't give a shit what anyone thinks.
Julien · 36-40, M
Yes , I don’t send nude without receiving payment first 😂
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@Julien Out of curiosity, have you ever been asked for one? I've been asked for pictures but never nudes, if I was, I would be HIGHLY suspicious! lol
Julien · 36-40, M
@WizardofOz no 😂 but that’s no the point ! 😜
SW-User
Yeah.. if u post nudes insta block..

If u post politics and religion insta block

Just two main ones
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I'm not strict about it but I often block people who delete my comments.
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@CrazyMusicLover Yes, and I think that's fair. I won't block them but I do delete their comments and tell them, "If you delete mine, I will delete your's".
RenFur · 70-79, M
I play it by ear. If we were armed then I'd insist we all live by a definite set of rules 🤨
GeniUs · 56-60, M
Yes hopefully we all do; somebody had posted a pic of a girl in underwear and claimed she was above the age of consent. Aside from the disturbing nature of this I don't want to go to prison because somebody else wants to act the bellend. Another user had already called him out for it, I asked him to take it down and when this helmet thought he knew best I reported him for it.

Sounds like you have no values, and will tolerate anything. Good luck!

My rule is to try not to stoop to their level. Perhaps it's fair but tit for tat belongs in the school playground.
