I have been hearing a lot lately about people buying vans and converting the interior to living space. Then they travel the country living in the van while working remotely. What are your thoughts on this?
I saw a photo of one with a really nice shower & a usable kitchen. Small sleeping place but for one person who didn’t need a lot of stuff it would be good.......ideas
@Stereoguy apparently there is such a demand that companies are designing and manufacturing these conversion kits. Probably bedbugs in hotels has helped with the trend, and the price of housing in cities that have job that need to be filled. Also it would be ideal for someone who is a consultant and drives to different cities to do consulting jobs
The wife was recently into the idea of living — or at least spending considerable time — in a converted van. She got into watching YouTube videos about vehicles customized into really quite amazing little habitats on wheels.
She also had the idea of using our vehicle — a Subaru Outback — and doing that. Amazingly, there's a subgroup of people out there who voluntarily live in their cars, some of them as small or smaller than ours.
She used reflective foam to make inserts that would block the light and heat in all the car's windows. She bought one of those rolled up foam mattresses that, by chance, fits exactly in the space available in the back of the car. She bought a vehicle refrigerator, three portable power stations and two solar panels. She figured it would all come in handy if, you know, society collapsed into a violent hellscape, which it could, I suppose.
@Stereoguy The little sunsporter we had once wasn't that much bigger, and the ex managed to fit a port a potti into one of the closets...🤣. But no showers.
if it was a luxury type Rv ,possibly, but I can't see living in a van. for some people that might be a necessity if they're very poor, I suppose. I could never afford a luxury RV though
It would be too confined.Inalso have a dog and a step- dognand damn step- cats. Cannot imagine all of them thrown ito a small mix of an area too. Gas is a dollar a litre here. And the virus runs rampant. My dear friend from EP, Demorcan, traveled that way across the states and made a living too. I like a bed that stays in one place ie doesn't move. A great question!
@Stereoguy *softly* I had considered doing it. But I was working. And I have dogs. I would have journeyed with him. Then he would not have died alone, my friend. Thank you for making me think on him. I loved him as a friend.
That's something that was around in the 70's and 80's, I have 2 vans and although I've done somethings in the back before I would never live in one or much less travel the country.
@Stereoguy Both. At one point we went across the US and back. I liked it a lot, so did my boyfriend. We also stayed in the same town for about 6 months. Our troubles started when we rented a room to get off the streets and our roommate turned out to be a dangerous person. We actually felt safe and OK on the streets.
Sounds cool, never tried it. I would like living on the road and being free of stuff. I want to take a 2-3 month road trip one day but it could probably become lonely if by yourself or annoying depending on your partner.
Parking and safety can become an issue. I have spent alot of time in a 200 sq foot home we own on the side and can tell you that you must be extremely organized and clean is necessary and tiring. My husband is messy so I can no longer entertain tiny house living. So its both good and bad. Works best if you have a safe place to park with electricity and bathroom access.
I cant do that I have that issue you know that phobia of less space congestion lol!! I can't it sounds not but not awesome for me on a long term basis.
