Do you live in a van?

I have been hearing a lot lately about people buying vans and converting the interior to living space. Then they travel the country living in the van while working remotely. What are your thoughts on this?

Down by the river.

The wife was recently into the idea of living — or at least spending considerable time — in a converted van. She got into watching YouTube videos about vehicles customized into really quite amazing little habitats on wheels.

She also had the idea of using our vehicle — a Subaru Outback — and doing that. Amazingly, there's a subgroup of people out there who voluntarily live in their cars, some of them as small or smaller than ours.

She used reflective foam to make inserts that would block the light and heat in all the car's windows. She bought one of those rolled up foam mattresses that, by chance, fits exactly in the space available in the back of the car. She bought a vehicle refrigerator, three portable power stations and two solar panels. She figured it would all come in handy if, you know, society collapsed into a violent hellscape, which it could, I suppose.

@Stereoguy In British Columbia, Canada, I have read articles about people who cannot afford housing as it is astronomical there and so they live in converted vans. They seem to be happy. They have hot plates. They keep their homes tidy. And think of all the money they save on rent. I don't think it would be that great in the winter, but winters in that province, being on the coast, are relatively mild and rainy.

@Stereoguy I have heard of that. It is sad. People who live in tents while others live in homes.
