Is it possible for hackers to turn on your PC, cell phone, laptop, Ipad, when it is turned off?

Can hackers listen in on your phone conversations? Can they view your activity on your devices unbeknownst to you?

Yes it is, anything with the word "Smart"in it too, even some TV sets have cameras in them. I keep a little square of paper over my computer camera because of this and have since I bought it.

Yes, you can remove the battery though.
Yes, I was watching something one time about hackers.. and an 'ex' hacker was saying that a really good hacker can gain full access to your computer or other device and has the ability to turn them on and off.. unless it's unplugged or the battery is out. So, yes they can.

Yes. As an engineer, they can pretty much do what they want if the features are turned on in the BIOS on your PC. Turn off PXE, WAKE ON LAN. Also put the system in hibernate, not sleep mode. Hope this helps. Android cell phones are the worst for hacking. Apple's latest iPhone 6 is pretty secure.
I would imagine that is entirely possible. And it's frightening - because if they can do it so can the government.

As I understand, a hacker can't really do so much if the electronic is off, unplugged, or both.

There was a scandal involving laptops being loaned to students to bring home and the school administrators were spying on them in their own homes, that was a few years ago and it was discovered because something got said to a student about something going on in the home and the only way they knew it was that they were spying on them.

No, if the computer or other device is turned off then it can't be turned on remotely. Don't confuse a device being turned off with a device that is in sleep mode or standby mode, these devices are actually still on. If the device is powered down and the electronics are not active then it can't be turned on remotely by a hacker.
cherokeepatti I do the same with my internet devices. I put a small piece/square of duct tape over the camera of all my devices and then turn the sound off. Doing that might not stop them from listening but the covering over the cam part will stop the spying.

I've read that the Smart-tvs can be hacked into and the camera inside turned on to spy on people in the room. Someone I worked with told a story about 15 years ago about a worker at the post office, mail sorter and it was a large room with a lot of employees. The manager had televisions installed in the sorting room and said it was for anti-stress. The man noticed that the tv's would move directions toward someone who was talking and figured out it was a spying device. This was more than 15 years ago, heard about it later and it was done in response to postal shootings. That is how old this technology of putting cameras inside of TVs is.
mlihere can hackers listen in on your conversations while you're paying a bill over the cell phone and do apps that protect your privacy from viruses and hackers really work?

If your carrier can they can.
You can disable remote access. But then you won't be able to access it remotely either, guess what you don'tneed rremote access
popmol · 26-30, M
normally it can't be turned on if its off but like completely off not like sleep mode, but all those other things yes
Cheropatti Yes! I heard about that. The kids were stealing the schools laptops so they would turn the camera on to find out who had it.
Livingwell thank you for the great advice. What about so-called Smart TVs? Can they be hacked too?
JarJarBoom · 41-45, F
No...it is not possible to turn something on, unless it can be remotely turned on
MarineBob · 56-60, M
I Will let you know. I just a techy to ask him to try to get in mine. If he does I'll Have a new one built
Smart tv's have a setting in which you can turn off to keep them from 'spying'.

@seotelkniwt Manually turning off the device isn't enough for "true" security if your it's been breached. It could be turned back on by a hacker, and in many cases turned back on in a way that it doesn't look like it's on at all. You'd have to remove power - so battery in a laptop or unplug for a desktop.

That's not a level of security most people would ever need to worry about, to be honest.
scott18 · 26-30, M
mlihere is right, cannot be done if power is off
Of course. It's not that hard.
YoMomma ·
Depends on how good of a hacker they are I guess I really have no clue
BrokenCode · F
Of course it is.

pennfifteen how do you know if your remote access is turned off on your computer? Are you saying simply manually turning off the computer is not enough?
pennfifteen · 31-35, M
@Marinebob It's still possible to gain access to a computer that has remote access turned off.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I saw a photo of Bill Gates with his personal computer and he had a square of paper over the camera too.
mlihere · 56-60, M
Not in Airplane mode. In Airplane mode all means of communication are cut off.
mlihere · 56-60, M
If the hacker can make a duplicate of your SIM card then they can listen in on your conversations. No app is fool proof and can protect you a 100%. There is always a work around protective software.
MarineBob how do I disble my remote access? Go to my settings?
popmol what if your device is in airplane mode?
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Just stop sexting.
